S&S lifters in new cvo street glide ?
« on: November 12, 2016, 02:57:01 PM »

Hey out there , new to the forum so if I do this wrong my apologies. I'm on my second 2016 CVO this year . First one tanked with lifter noise out of the box. HD wanted to change the motor. With HD's help I got a second new bike that was perfect out of the box but started getting noisy after 600 miles. Tried several different oils and I get come improvement first ride after the change but as I use it and as it heats up it gets worse. At 3000 miles it now goes from ticking at cold to clacking once hot. I really notice the power loss when clacking. It does quiet down thru different power ranges but is loud at idle then noisy again at 1700 to 2400 right where I drive it. I did try a new oil bypass spring and plunger to reduce foaming but little effect. At 2000 RPM on 75 degree day oil pressure is 36 PSI and as expected HD says these sounds are normal. Has anyone been able to make the cooled head CVO motor quiet using S&S lifters or for that matter using any other secret method?

You are a cam, pushrod set, and valve spring change (non HD parts) from solving the issue.

What about cam plate and oil pump upgrade added to the list?

Not needed.
The stock parts are sufficient. You could add Rocker Lockers and selective fit pins for lifter rotation.

why would the cam need to change? does the stock cam have an unmanageable ramp up? what cam will give similar performance?

TTS100 is one option in a torquer, yes the ramps are aggressive. If you don't mind a little torque hit and I mean a little an Andrews 57 is a good choice too. The pipe matters a lot when evaluating the torque curve.

Thank you for the information. I know this is a long shot but would you know any good S&S/HD motor shops up in Ontario Canada?

Im in the GTA and am amazed that with a population 6 million people, there are few good shops and tuners around. I did my first build with Stay Tuned in the Hamilton area. Hes a one man show, and I was happy at first, but would no longer recommend him.

For my last rebuild I shipped my parts to GMR and had a local HD wrench that does work on the side do the re and re. I took the bike down to PA for tuning by one of the best tuners around.

Lots more info I have about local places so PM me and we can chat.

Lifters too, not the HD type.

Did that with all S&S parts Inc. premium lifters and cam plate/oil pump. Rocker lockers too. Its getting noisy again so I'm going back in this winter to see how things look. Lifters must be leaking down because it is nosier at cold start. Any Ideas?

Did you check crank runout?  If it's large, it'll wear the oil pump and reduce oil flow.  Seems like lifters are very sensitive to oil flow/pressure.  Might help to put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the oil pressure sender fitting to check, since HD gauge is known to be inaccurate.

BTW, the TTS100 cam can be noisy too, especially with borderline lifters/oil pressure.

S&S .570, S&S lifters and pushrods, tune. No it's not a "designer" cam, but will give a very good shot in the shorts down low and carry to the limiter. Quiet too.

Cycle Rama 570 is another torquer but still will be in the party after 4,000 unlike the SE255
