05 103 motor pings under load
« on: August 21, 2017, 02:50:10 PM »

I have a 2005 cvo electraglide w the 103 screamin eagle motor. Just bought it last month w 11000 miles on it and i notice it pings alot under load ( like running cheap gas) but i always run hi test. Is this normal for that motor? None of my 88 ci motors did it even the one w a big bore kit. Any help is appreciated!

Pinging is a tuning issue.  My 110 did the same thing, even running cooler sparkplugs and as high of an octane I could find (typically 93 oct. where I am).  If I ran 91 it would ping all the time, if I ran 93 or 94 it would only ping under hard acceleration.  The good news is that you don't have cats, so you can tune out any of that super-lean function pretty easy.

Do you know the history of the bike?  If the engine is stock, pinging shouldn't be an issue on 91 or 93 octane gas.  If the previous owner changed cams or compression ratio and didn't get a good tune to match the new configuration, then detonation could easily result.

My 2004 did that last year for the first time right after I pulled it out from storage.  Ran some Techron (spelling) fuel cleaner through it and all was good again.  Figure the injectors were mucked up a bit from the fuel.  That Techron is the only thing I would use to clean the system, follow directions.

As a former Chevron dealer I will tell you Techron is a great product.  It most likely stopped the pinging by cleaning the carbon off of the top of the pistons.  It also cleans the valve stems well.  With the quality of the fuel supply in most places now clogged injectors rarely happen.

I dont know the history of the bike other than it was a 1 owner. Thanks for the ideas gonna swing into the dealer saturday n see what they can do. I do agree that techron is the best stuff on the market. I may have to try that!

It is a low compression motor with big open chambers. It has poor valve seals. Oil in the combustion effectively lowers octane. Lots of room to build carbon if the previous owner (s) were luggers too. Techron will help as would seafoam in the gas.
The cvo 103 can be improved a lot, the first change is the cam. If the heads come off better yet and the poor valve seals
Are fixed and heads milled to build some compression plus better valve springs and some porting.

do a compression test,if its with in reason (185-195) its a tuning problem,if its over 210,it could be a carbon problem or just set up with too much compression for the cams in it,wouldnt be the first build where it just didn't use matching parts
