P3R Crank - Updating the 120r
« on: August 05, 2017, 05:51:10 PM »

Noticed some piston slap in Michelle's motor so decided to freshen up that 120r.

Dave at P3R built a crank for me, Carrillo rods, balanced 60%.  Really a work of art.  Dave has been GREAT to deal with, made it easy.

Mr. Sachs is going through the heads to freshen them up and doing some more of his magic.  Frank at Dragos hook me up with some of his custom blower pistons.  He then cut the S&S unfinished cylinders to spec for the pistons.

Cases are out for Timken
S&S Blue Plate and Pump
S&S Premium Lifters
Smtih Brother pushrods
S&S 640 Cams
Roller Rockers
Considering Baker Street Door
Drago's 2-1 exhaust (Original pipe)
obviously new bearings etc.
Going to try the SE Clutch 3 spring that we had and see how it holds up.

Now for some of that engine porn.

Tensioner after 22k -   being replaced glad we looked.   lifters and cams showed virtually no wear

The Carrillo rods are a work of art and imo the strongest to can get, I used them in a 1979 Honda CBX when I did the motor

Hope not to have to cross that bridge, although if she does she needs to get better with directions.

Excited though as we get her cases back this week.

- teaser - My stuff should be back from cryogenics this week also, but that's another thread.

It does sound as though the Faster Chapter may be a little quicker.

Harry what kind of lead time was there on the crank?

Don,

True on the multiple meanings in this case though Wifey was tired of the top end noise, it was bugging her.  Front cylinder was passing some oil and there was a lot of piston slap.  Started from there and snowballed.

Original SE Crank was just under .003 nothing wrong (probably sell it).

After the snowball effect took hold it was decided  to put a timken in the SE cases.

Just seemed to be just one more thing each time till it was a whole motor rebuild.

Now your caught up in the middle :)

2-3 weeks.   - each crank is custom made to order.   Just call Dave tell him what your doing or want to do and he does the rest.

That slippery slope is a wallet killer.  "One more" thing can always seem like such a good idea.

Have fun with the project Harry.  Spending the money anyway so might as well enjoy it.  Will look forward to hearing how it finishes out.

Next quest will be how well the 3 bolt SE Clutch holds up.  Found some heat in the clutch pack, not bad but something to watch.

It can be 3rd there is one more in between.

You know I been collecting parts for my upcoming build and I know what a slippery slope that can be. If you just let me go through yer junk parts bin I can prolly salvage enough to contribute to my project. And cash filled mason jars, really. There is only two things I store in a mason jar and cash ain't one of them.

Still some good looking parts

Are those shafts new parts or re-manufactured, salvaged and machined, from the OEM flywheels?
The picture of the piston is a little hard to make out. It almost looks like there is a groove below the pin. I understand the support rail under ring #3 but not the other. That said maybe there is nothing there and it is just the photo.
Not a criticism at all I think you have a strong plan and good parts.
As far as the price of the crank, fair is all I can say. The rods are $600. Add that to an S&S crank or a reworked crank and see where you are at? That said neither hold a candle the the P3R, a limited production top quality piece.

Don it's a 100 manufactured by P3R less the rods.  You can supply your own or use Ultima rods or go all the way with Carillo.

Another point to not overlook is it is completely rebuildable and handles gobs more power.

It's a taper not a ring groove

Harry
What is the groove under the pin for?

It's not a groove, it's a radius.  Same feature top and bottom...

Hi Harry,

You are not going back in with this S&S proprietary pump/camplate setup?  Right?

You are disposing of all this and using the S&S blue cam plate and three stage pump? Right?

Thanks for the great photo shots.

For the moment I am going back to it the gear drive system.  One motor Wifeys will have bluepump and plate and mine will have gear drive.   If I have issues again I will change it.   Too short on time to dink with the conversion

I don't have a good understanding of how this reed valve works and I am most likely wrong but does it somehow control cam chest and crankcase pressure??

Maybe that seal blew out?  Maybe it needs some sort of retaining ring?

The reed valve is designed to eliminate oil carry over.   The seal blowing out I believe is from rings allowing pressure by them adding to crank case pressure.   Going add venting and see what happens in round 3

Cases are back,

Oil pump, cams, new tensioners installed and ready to go.

Timken is in and oilers reinstalled.

Cases go together tomorow and the mockup starts.    Had to wait on a 12 dollar washer for the center screw of the cases.

Found pitting on the exhaust valves for the S&S heads :(.  Intakes were fine.   Expensive exhaust valves for the S&S Motor.   John said 60 bucks a piece cause their made from Inconel ???   The 120r heads were fine.

Conical Springs.   Haven't gotten the final numbers yet for pressures.

Conical Springs.   Haven't gotten the final numbers yet for pressures.

You probably know Conical springs vary the distance between each coil from bottom to top, so coil bind potential must be checked at the top coils of the spring.

And the advantage of conical springs over double or triple wound springs or beehive springs is the natural frequency wave generated by the conical spring.  Because each coil has it's own frequency, the natural wave is dampened.  Then by varying the spacing between the coils, the natural wave is further dampened.  Increased longevity and increased performance is the result.  The technology of the conical spring is old - we first tried them back in the 1970's (in high performance V-8 motors).   The R&D folks we worked with at Cam Dynamic's knew that a pure conical, spring was beneficial, but the available materials and machining techniques could not produce the idea. The idea never got past the dyno.  Today, high-quality spring wire and CNC coil winding machines make the conical spring possible.  You're the first I know of in our little world here to install them in a set of MOCO heads.  I'm curious as to how they will work out.  I'll bet the top end noise is reduced - for one...

Scott, I need to correct the post.  The  other motor build  is getting conicals this one is getting AV&V inner/outer springs.   The heads  will be set to 165-168 and 420 on the nose.  Should be fully assembled tomorrow for installation.

Throttle body and bottom rocker boxes are on.   Lifters are sitting in oil and have been soaking a couple of days.   Just need to install the lifters, set the pushrods and finish installing the cradles and button her up and put the bullet back in the frame.

Since there has been a bunch of requests on the gasket & color - here ya go !

Pushrods are set, tubes are on, cam cover is drying from the safety clean.

Motor turns over nicely - some finishing touches and back in the frame we go.

Haha!  That's good mate :2vrolijk_21: I used the same thing (copper gasket sealer) on my little top end and cam job.
I didn't use the spray tho. I did it the old school way, apply a little sealer then do the finger dabbing technic to get the thin even layer of sealant on the gasket so it doesn't push a over load of sealer on the outer side and inner side when the two parts are put together.
Been using copper gasket sealer and copper grease for for a long time. Copper grease can also be used on gaskets have done that before.

Well the rebuild of her 120r is complete.   Dyno is done, almost 300 miles of break in with heat cycles.   No metal in the oil, and really smooth.

Special thanks to Mr. Sachs, Dave at P3r, and Frank Drago.    Bike runs great, really quiet, and pulls hard.

Ed I don't notice any discernible difference on the lower end of the rpm scale, but imo the more you spin it up the smoother it seems to me.

Dave thanks,

The bulletproof/reliability part was the first goal.  Time will tell, but short of a stray mechanical failure I think we hit the nail on the head at least from a parts list.   Now its time for her to put miles on it.  Cranking 191 and 193.

Love those numbers especially with where the ccp is at. The more I ride this thing of mine the more I like the no pms route. Maybe the weather gods will look out for you and she can get some miles on it soon

Incredible build, thank you for showing the details.  I agree this should be very reliable.

Did you install the S&S inner primary race to protect the 5th gear shaft seal?

Hi 2002FXDWG3,

I was not aware of a non slip race for the 6 speeds.   I know many used them with the 5 speeds.   If you have a part number for the new bikes could you share it.   The other choice you have is if you have any concerns with the race slipping you can always use the baker bearing.

I have the Baker Primary bearing in mine and no  issues. My race walked on my 07 in the early days. Also haven't heard of a non slip race either.

Yes I have thought about applying the Baker Street door. Transmission's I have not ventured into repairing/improving them.

Maybe a good winter project and more tools.
