Howards JRI with Sweep Valve vs No Sweep Valve
« on: August 11, 2017, 07:53:02 PM »

I was looking at Howards Motorcycle Metal JRI page. His modified shocks cost about 175 more but the travel distance is less. Has anyone have experience with both? Does anyone have  pic to see what the external valving looks like? He did not post any pics. Pros Cons? Thanks

Ok. Thanks,  he hasn't deleted that page online. I will be Riding my newly rebuilt Road King to the Smokies this Fall and if my current YSS Z366-TRL don't give me the Ride I want I will call them and get a set installed there. I got their info in my phone. Thanks

I run a pair of the JRI 13" with the sweep valve. The sweep valve has been very useful in tailoring the ride for us. As stated earlier Howard no longer deals with JRI. We have around 40,000 miles on these shocks and it took 2 seals for the polish rod in the first 10,000 miles. No problems since. Hopefully they have their process fixed on their new shocks. Ride is very good and wife will tell you that they are the best money we have spent on the bike. All that said... are they as good as Ohlins?

Ok thanks.  Your the 1st person to give me pics. I saw plenty of the newer shocks online that they now make. You having issues with the shaft is the 1st time I heard of that. I will be sure not to order JRI shocks with the red rebound adjustment knob. Thanks

Howards page 39 list the following.
A Single Tube Emulsified, No External Valving.
12" 88mm Stroke. 13" 101mm Stroke
B Single Tube Emulsified, Sweep Valve  External Valving.
12" 77mm Stroke.  13" 92mm Stroke

The shock travel quote from JRI for the new shocks
The 12" has a 3.1" stroke. The 13" has 3.6" of stroke.

I forgot to convert  Jri measurements to mm
3.1" = 78.74 mm.
3.6" = 91.44 mm

Maybe Howard has went back to selling JRI again then. I have not talked to him since we lost the last set of seals and he referred me to JRI as he was no longer selling them.

If you order them let us know what you think.

My Road King will be finnished next week and I have to break in the motor.  I have a s set of YSS Z366-TRL shocks 320mm  or 12.6" travel that has a rebound and spring preload adjustment. If I am not happy I will get the 13" 25nm single adjustable shocks. I need to at least try them to get the wife of my back before spending 800 bucks. I have been wanting the JRI shocks.

That is something I did forget to say. I did go with the 13". Honestly can't tell much difference in the height and the extra travel sure makes the wife happy

I concur, I however use bitubos. I started out with 300mm changed to 330mm late last year.

I would not give Howard the time of day.
I bought a set of JRI's from him, and then I needed zip ties and a special dial indicator, and when I still couldent get them to feel right, I met him as his little home made booth in Daytona for Bike Week, and I spent all day making tiny adjustments and the seeing hat feels better.  I got the impression that Howard dosent know chit about his products, and I would never give him any of my business.
