Compression lock
« on: August 25, 2017, 08:44:11 AM »

Had the strangest thing with my 14 KSE.  Was about to set off an holiday, and for the first time ever, my bike wouldn't turn over.  Thought that maybe it was the battery, so tried to jump start it, still wouldn't turn over. Live on a hill, so I thought we'd try bump starting it, but in all gears, the rear wheel just locked.   So got to thinking it must be some sort of compression lock. Thought I'd take out the plugs and see if it would turn over then. Rear plug out first, and struck it lucky, turned over on the starter no problem.  Plug back in, started up, and completely fine since, after 2500 miles, no apparent ill effects.  Problem has not recurred.  Any ideas?

compression alone wouldn't cause this (the motor simply dosnt have enough compression),if the cylinders where full of fuel it can.weird problem,

Yes, definitely weird.  Cyl wasn't full of fuel, of course. I just can't get my head round what could cause it that could be cured by taking the plug out.

Does sound like an air locked engine.  Maybe a tooth missing on the starter & when you pushed it it advanced enough?

Don't think so - engine wouldn't turn in any gear going down the hill either.  It was locked OK, and obviously the rear cylinder, but as to why...... :nixweiss:

collapsed lifter didnt open the valve? not sure thats even possible just throwing it out there. i think it would still take a huge amount of compression to keep it from turning past when pushing it though.

I only heard of something like this one time (true story).

Guy at the local parts store sells a case of oil and filter to a gal who wants to change her own motor oil.  She calls awhile later to tell the guy that after she changed the oil the engine won't start.  So he asks the basic questions...is the battery dead, did you drain the oil, remove and replace the filter, etc.  Long story short, she refilled the engine with the entire case of oil.  So much oil in the crankcase the pistons literally couldn't move.

Ok I'm sure that's not the case here, just made me think of this story.  :drummer:
