During World War II the government kept Harley Davidson in business and Fort Meade was a part of that....

Ft. Meade also was the place where they set a world record with their stratoshere balloon test....

Poker Alice had her place in history.  She owned the brothel that serviced all of the men from the base back in it's day as well as the gamblers and gun sliners from Deadwood....

Back to the calvary......

Gen. George Armstrong Custer....

And back to the birthplace of our national anthem.....

Many of the original buildings are still standing and in use today.....

The original stables....

Ft. Meade was one of the last active Calvary posts in the nation.  That's all for Ft. Meade.  Let's move on to another town that's full of history and colorful figures like Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Poker Alice, etc.....

The original Deadwood was built of wood and burned down in a fire of the 1800s.  When they rebuilt it, they built it out of stone and brick and many of those buildings are still standing and being used.

Pick your seat at the bar....

If you watched the Deadwood series on TV then you know that Saloon #10 is where Wild Bill Hickock was shot in the back while playing cards.  This is the location of that place and still a saloon today...

and then you'll also recognize the Bullock Hotel....

Babe and I were going from shop to shop just looking.  We had just finished eating and we went into a shop a few doors up the street and met this lady working behind the counter......Olivia.  She's also the lady in the painting.

If you've been riding for as many years as I have, you'll recognize Scott Jacobs work in about a half second.  No other artist can paint chrome quite like Scott does.....where it actually looks like chrome that you can touch.....see the reflections in.....

Olivia is Scott's daughter.  I'd met Scott briefly at an art gallery in Sacramento many, many years ago (I believe it was in the late 80s or early 90s) and I vaguely remembered that he was from back east.....New Jersey I believe.  So I asked Olivia what she was doing in Deadwood.  Long story short, the whole family moved to Deadwood and Scott opened his gallery here.  He was actually upstairs painting in his studio at the time we were talking with Olivia.

It was about this time that Sharon, Scott's wife, came down the stairs and we met her also.  Both very beautiful ladies!  Scott is a lucky man....living life large.  I asked if I could take some pics for this forum and that was not a problem....just the nicest people.

This is also Olivia....

And how many of you know about the Cannonball Century Race?  It was coast to coast, 3,306 miles and the bikes were all at least 100 years old.  Both Scott and Sharon rode in that race.  I remember it so well because it ended in Escondido, Ca. and we were living in San Diego at the time.  Big news for the motorcycle community.  Here's a youtube video ......

Scott Jacobs....

Sharon Jacobs...

By the way, the Cannonball Race for 2018 will be going from Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore.  Kirk we sure expect to see some of your outstanding photography of those bikes since they start out in your back yard in Maine.

Scott's studio happens to be in the building where they caught Jack McCall, the guy that shot Wild Bill Hickock....

Footnote:  The Harley t-shirt shop is across the street from Scott Jacobs studio.  Babe and I walked over and looked at the logos on the back.  About the time that I started thinking "one of the t-shirts from Scott Jacobs would be much more unique than just another Harley shirt....", Babe said it out loud to me "if you're going to buy another shirt I think you should get a Scott Jacobs......at least it'll be more unique".  An artist of his caliber and uniqueness to the motorcycle world....probably more than I'd like to pay for a shirt was running through my head as we walked back across the street.  To my surprise....a better quality shirt, Scott Jacobs design on the shirt and a long sleeve, made in the USA, thermal type shirt was less than a t-shirt across the street.  So the next time you're in Deadwood....stop in the Scott Jacobs studio and get yourself a shirt that's a little more unique.  And for all you high rollers, you can pick up an original or two Scott Jacobs art work to put in your man cave with all your CVOs!  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks JC for the excellent pictures and descriptions. We have been going out to Sturgis about every year since 1996 and your photos are fun to see as we have seen most of them in person.

I have never seen the Iron Mountain sign at Spokane Creek Campground before, will have to ad a pic of it next year when we get back. We will have to spend some time at Ft. Meade as we have always just driven by it.

I really appreciate your time and effort documenting your road trips on the site.

We're at an Indian Casino at the South Dakota-Nebraska state line as I write this.  Interesting.....no cell reception to text or call but we still have internet through our Verizon Jet Pack.

bigsixman, I know what you mean.....I've been to all of those places many times, drove by the Old Ft. Meade many times and would see the signs that say VA Hospital but never paid much attention beyond that.  I thought that those that have only been for the bike rally might enjoy seeing it from a different perspective.  It was a great week for us.

The sign at Spokane Creek Campground (at the end of the wild life loop.....or the begining, depending on which way you're going) is new.  I'd never seen it before and it was very fresh paint.  I'm thinking they did it just before the rally this year.  Next year it'll be a busy place to stop and get your pic taken with the signs.  Nice RV park and campground and store there, also.

We never realized how many RV parks there are in the Black Hills until we rode through this time.  It's interesting all the things you see and notice that you don't during bike week because you're to busy watching out for all the other bikes out there.....and the drunks that shouldn't even be on a bike.

Yes, it was Hwy. 83 just north of Valentine.  Left there at 6:30 a.m. and it's now 6:10 p.m.  We've been set up here in Witchata, Ks. for about half hour.  It has poured rain unlike I've seen in many years......almost every mile of it!  Have an appt. in Norman, Okla. to get disc brakes put on this beast and the forecast for there for Wed. & Thur. is low 80s.  Then on to the Grand Design dealership in Little Rock, Ark. by the weekend.

Well, we spent the winter here in Athens, Texas.  Certainly an interesting state.  Snowed while we were in McAllen, Tex. (Mexico boarder) and we liked both San Antonio and Dallas/Ft. Worth areas.  Current news....a police officer in Farmers Branch was convicted of murder after chasing down a 16 yr. old that was breaking in to his car.  A sherriffs deputy was just convicted of stealing guns from the evidence locker and selling them back out on the street.  Wild, wild west folks......or Don't Mess With Texas.

We're going to drive up to Wichita Falls to visit my niece on Fri.  This Sat. we will be pulling out of Texas and headed to Florida for a couple of months.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Sure wish I'd I known you were in East Texas...I live only 45 miles away on the other side of Tyler. Unfortunately, I'm in Houston through Thursday afternoon, so looks like I will miss ya this go around! I still owe you BBQ and  beer for helping me with the NorCal routing!
