S & S T124 motor
« on: October 27, 2017, 06:35:59 PM »

I am considering getting this motor for my 2015 SESG. So I'll be going from wet heads to air cooled. Ripping out the water pump, lines, radiators and fans is simple enough. But what about the ECM. I am currently using Thundermax. Thundermax tells me they can't help cause the vin is tied to the module so it will always show engine light trying to run water pump and fans even though they aren't there.

So my question is has any one gone from wet heads to total air cooled and what did you do about the tuner? Thanks so much for any and all input.

thinking you may have to make some jumpers with a resister to simulate a load on the circuit...like they did with 02 sensors  :nixweiss: just thinking out load, steve cole may have some n but you will probably  need his tunnner (TTS)

Serious question............ Why ?   ???

Well I did something really stupid and let a crook touch my bike and it was really bad results. Rather than trying to replace all missing (stolen) parts and rebuild I figured might be just as easy to go new.....

Others have gone wet to dry and accomplished this with just reloading a "dry" map in to the stock ECM.  So it's even easier than sending your ECM off to any aftermarket entity for any reprogramming.  Your position is different, however, since you've gone to Thundermax.

You no longer have the stock ECM in place.  It might be as simple as just reloading a "dry" bike map from the Thundermax library.  I don't remember reading of anyone actually doing this yet with a TMax ECM installed though.  Your question is best directed to to the OE for the TMax module though.  Since you're not using the stock ECM all of TechnoResearch's tools and skills working with stock ECMs likely won't do you much good.

OE for the TMax modules is a placed called ThunderHeart.  Contact them through here:

Thanks so much . But I do still have the stock ECM and could go back to it easily.  That's what I was wondering if a "dry " map could be loaded into the stock ECM and. And make that work. My local dealer doesn't have a clue as to how to make this work.

A few instances of doing just that (loading a "dry" map) have been detailed on the site here previously.  The following is just speculation as I don't have experiences with the newer Thundermax modules.  I'd be very surprised though if there was a physical difference between the TMax modules for wet or dry bikes.  It's very likely you can do the same thing there as well and simply load a map that is correct for the bike as you have changed that bike.

My 13 CVO King with the 117, at 138.5 HP and 140 Torque is lots of fun.

Do you have any heat issues with the 124? I was gonna add a 5qt oil pan and an oil cooler as well.

I did the Ultra Cooler on mine. mostly no issues though you definitely need to watch it on the really hot days and stop and go traffic.

Thanks for that info. That's been a concern of mine especially since I live in south Florida. We are a steam bath from June through September. So I figured a 5 qt oil pan, a oil cooler plus the love jugs fans should help.

Fans and extra oil do help but if you get stuck in 85 degree plus weather and have to sit at traffic lights the heat will climb until you can get back in the wind. Just my experience. Mostly for me it is the heat off the rear cyl pipe as I have the old D&D pipe that has a protruding bend that is very close to the back of my right knee and yes I have the burn marks. However without the fans it is much worse so they do help.

Thanks. I am using the D&D Boarzilla but is doesn't get close to my legs except right by the rear brake pedal at the floorboard. But I never felt any heat there with my 117.

Over the last several years, I've done quite a few 124" S&S engines, both hi-compression and the low compression version for customers in south Florida, and central Florida. Young customers, and old customers. The engines don't exhibit any pms when tuned properly. They actually have less compression than the Harley engines do, and come with a better warranty also.
Never had to use big oil pans, ultra-coolers, or fans. Over-heating problems aren't any more than the factory engines.
I currently have one in the works for a customer in Broward County.
If you need any info on the S&S engines pm me.

John your right, to be fair it does not run any hotter than my 110 did though both are hotter than my M8 but could be the cool fan making me feel that difference. I also run a Boarzilla and have never had any issues with heat coming off it other than normal

I run a Boarzilla also. Recently D&D changed the rear cylinder pipe to tuck in which is more like stock. Mine is a few years old and the rear cylinder pipe comes out and turns before coming down. I don't have a pic right now to show. Anyway that curve is what gets really hot.
