Seeking exhaust advice 2018 CVO Limited re: Warranty
« on: November 13, 2017, 10:47:39 PM »

I’m posting in this area because I think I may get the best advice here.

I have a 2018 CVO 115th Limited on order. Like with every other of my previous rides, I have always changed the exhaust and re-mapped the ECM.

I have a power vision that I’ve used on a few bikes, starting with a canned map and then using the basic autotune feature using the stock O2 sensors. Of course this is for a simple header, air intake and muffler replacement... nothing dramatic.

My plan for this new bike will likely be a Jackpot Milwaukee-Eight 2/1/2 Stainless Steel Head Pipe, either Jackpot High rollers or similar 4” VH muffler thru Fuel Moto or possibly a set of Fullsac CVO cores as I’d like to retain the stock look. (Feel free to opine on that choice)

The goal?... a bump in torque, tone and reduction of heat. The good people at fuelmotousa will supply me with a base map for my power vision when I buy the parts from them and I can take it from there.

My questions or the advice I’m seeking:

1. What is the real risk in regards to warranty that I will be facing. My dealer has suggested that unless the trouble can be pointed directly to the mods to the exhaust that I shouldn’t worry, and while I know I could always put the old header back, if I tune the bike, the ECM will always be branded as modified, and of course there is no going back from Fullsac cores. Fact of the matter is I’ve never really ever had any engine issues with any of the Harley’s I’ve owned.

2. Is there a setup someone knows of that would achieve the goals of reducing heat and improving torque and sound without putting myself at risk (but I think I already know the answer is no on that one)

3. So if warranty risk is what I am facing anyway is there a better setup anyone can recommend for the M8 117 CVO motor?

1.  Your risk depends on your dealer or where you might need repairs. Your dealer is correct that H-D must show your trouble was caused by your mods. You can, however, "go back" to stock cores from Fullsac cores. You simply install them with a screw like the Fullsacs unless you're a welder. I have helped a friend do exactly that. His wife thought the Fullsacs too loud.

2.  H-D claims the M-8 engine (2017 forward) was designed to and does run cooler. I've not read any complaints about the heat so you might want to wait unless you know someone who has heat issues.

3.  Call Steve at Fullsac. He has posted some threads on the M-8.

To be frank I've never actually heard a stock CVO M8. Maybe I will like the sound and if it runs cool... possibly a wait and see attitude is the best.

I'd likely get the first break in period done before i did anything if that were the case and give HD a chance to impress me LOL ;D

When tuning with TTS Mastertune, you have the option to restore the factory fuel map. When the original map is restored it also brings back the original date and time stamp prior to purchase. A date and time stamp after the original purchase date is how they know the ECM has been flashed or potentially tampered with.

Thanks Steve. I did not realize that. At first blush I believed I’d be saving money by staying with the PV I already own, but when I did the math not so... plus when you weigh in the advantages of your offerings.... Here's the math:

FMUSA: Jackpot M8 xpipe $499, PV licence $199, Can Cable $30, Jackpot High Rollers $540
Total = $1268

FULLSAC: MX headpipe with TTS Bundle $1049, CVO Power Cores $149, CVO Techmat Kit $99
Total = $1297

Both setups come with a custom map, though it's a one time only thing with FM because I purchased tuner elsewhere. From what I have read, I could likely expect ongoing support from Fullsac. +1 for Fullsac.

Both setups would answer the stock look, improved exhaust tone, reduced heat and torque bump I'm looking for, but the Fullsac setup goes further with retaining the CVO cans for a stock look out back as well PLUS has a full round crossover pipe rather than reusing the crushed OEM crossover. +2 more Fullsac

The advantage of the TTS Tuner being able to go back in time with the original map AND original time stamp is HUGE as far as warranty goes. + how much the warranty is worth for Fullsac.

When you then figure in the Fullsac performance gains - I guess that answers my question.

Thanks Steve !!! We will be talking as soon as my new bike has a ship date!

Look at dyno charts on stock bikes with just the head pipe and baffles or slip ons.  You will see, the MX is a better head pipe.

Steve,

I sent you a PM. It's time to order! Only question now is 1.75" or 2" CVO power cores? Thoughts?

No bad choice here, splitting hairs. The 2.0 makes the best overall power. The 1.75 is slightly quieter and makes earlier TQ. It's more about personal preference on sound level that you can hear than a performance difference you can't feel.

What Steve said, but ...

Personally, I went with the 1.75" cores for the slight quieter portion and low-end TQ.
Here's a short video of the 1.75" cores.

Thank you all for the advice. I placed my order for the whole Fullsac program... MX pipe, 2.0" power cores, techmat blankets and TTS Mastertuner. When you compare it to everything else, the price is far less than say a full V-H system, with the same or likely greater performance gains plus better service. (from what I've read on this forum, no one has any complaints)

I'll hang on to the old cores and header and of course save the original ECM map in case of a major warranty issue, though as i think back on my previous rides, I've never really had one so this may be irrelevant, but I'm a packrat anyway.

Thanks Steve (at Fullsac) for all the help and please pass my thanks on to Sheri! She's a wonderful "Front Line" first impression for your business!  :2vrolijk_21:

I'll go one better. Once the bike arrives and all the parts are in hand i will make a YouTube video of the whole process and post it here! There are a few older vids online but maybe time for a new one!  :huepfenjump3:
