2014 CVO Limited 117 Build with S&S 585
« on: February 20, 2018, 08:49:12 PM »

Posting my dyno. Very happy with the way the bike runs. S&S 585 CAM with Harley 117 kit pieces. Heads were done by GMS in Uniontown Pa., they picked this cam to go with a the 10:1 compression from kit. Bike is a cross country all day tripper. 23k on the clock and stock 110 with just pipes (VH power duals and hi output mufflers) before build.

Wanted to stay at a moderate lift (under .600) and 125hp for the stock lower end.  The cam, lifters and gaskets from Harley 117 kit were not used. Cosmetic .030 head gasket, Feuling lifters and Harley adjustable pushrods. The perfect fit and stock pushrods were too long.
Pistons were .006 and .007 in the hole. Heads were ported and shimmed after. Decked .009 after to make up for some material removed around d valves and keep compression same as kit. Used the wethead stock valves and springs.

Final numbers of the dyno left a few on table. Damien is GMS tuner and runs all bikes at 40 psi for a comparison. So dropped a number or three but he spent 5 hours on it and graph only represents a full throttle run. He spends most time setting up cruising map. Bike was heat cycled a few times and broke in on the dyno so the 2500 and below was not hammered on.

On the road, insane fast. Pulls from 60mph to 110mph in seconds- fifth or sixth gear.  The big difference is when the stock 110 quit pulling hard at 4500 and quit all the way above 5k, this build keeps pulling the entire time. No let off. Have not hit the rev limiter yet and only ran it for 50 miles, but total different attitude of motor. More hot rod but still pulls from basement. Off the line feels the same or stronger than stock. Looking at the SE catalog these builds come in at 110hp and ft,/lbs so we made a little extra with kit compression. Torque on stock 110 motor is 100ft/lbs at 2800 and falls off shortly after. This bike starts about same and climbs to almost 130. I can let out clutch without any throttle and she pulls away.    So I am happy with results and should be a good highway cross country burner.

Nice build. Sounds like you are happy and should be. I am a little surprised that the torque didn't go more vertical with the 585 but that could be the hi outputs. Any idea where your CCP ended up? Enjoy the ride and the new found shortening of tire life!  :2vrolijk_21:

Any clutch issues?

No clutch problems, another reason 125 was my cut off.  Don't know what ccp is on this or even how to figure it.  I was against this cam originally and on the "need more compression" or early intake close idea. But after riding I am glad I listened to Greg at GMS. His thought was this is not a 95 inch build and a 117 will not be soft down low with just 10:1 at a 45 close. Can't imagine the ccp is high with this set up. He says a bigger motor  reacts different and by sheer size makes a difference.  He is a drag race mind by heart, so a large lift, 60 degree late intake and 150 inches is his norm. Told me the early 40 closes on some cams make taking a bunch of timing out to tune.
In the end I got 50 percent more power on both scales and won't be hurting anything running 1000 mile days. That was goal. Now to see if I can slow it down.

Looks great! I had high outputs at one point. Even when I was (more) naïve to the performance world, I could really tell they were making my bike a dog on the low/low-mid range. Not that there is anything "wrong" with your bike, but you'd be surprised how much earlier that torque can come in without em'.

Again, not criticizing your build. Just relaying my experience and the performance boost when I changed em' out :)

Now that I have reread I see why I didn't see what I was expecting to see. I was originally reading SE585 and not S&S 585. You have a pretty similar build to mine except for mufflers and I am would bet your scoot will behave well on less than perfect gas, making it perfect for touring

If you can find an "old school" set of Kuryakyn Crushers (not the maverick series), a lot of people have had great luck with those including myself. They are discontinued I believe, but should still be some in circulation. The Fullsac cores are another great option if you still have your stock slip-ons.

I am run the Crushers now and have both the quiet and standard baffles. Those mufflers may be available shortly
