Cam upgrade for 2015 Road Glide Ultra CVO?
« on: July 18, 2018, 11:12:20 PM »

Hoping I can get some help here for deciding which cam to get for my 15 Road Glide Ultra CVO.   It is currently in the shop.  One of the lifters came loose and destroyed the engine.  I'm getting a new 110 installed.  I currently am running with stock screaming eagle air box, Vance and Hines power duals, and CFR pipes.  Since it is getting a new engine I figure it is a good time to replace the cams.  The tech suggested that I go with the Harley 585.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a better replacement or comments on the Harley 585 cams?  Much appreciated!

Want more power dump the CRF's and replace with a set of 2" Fullsac cores. Replace the air filter with a HD heavy breather as for cams there a few that work well, one you could go with is a CR570-2.  Then get a good dyno tune. (not some downloaded map from the dealer)
I am sure some of the builders/tuners that are on this site will give you some very good advice. Be patient and give them time to respond.

LC110 has it right.  Lose the CFRs and you’ll be amazed at your newfound power.  The SE585 or
CR570-2 are both good choices for cams but it’s wasted money if you retain the CFRs.

Interesting, that is the first I have heard about the CFRs.  That said, what would you recommend for new pipes?

2 inch Fullsac baffles for stock mufflers with a Fullsac headpipe or a D&D Fatcat would be my choices.

I know it's been done but with an intake close of 36, 10.5 is a bit much in my book.  It takes a very good tune to make it close to acceptable with that much compression IMO.   You may be thinking of the S&S585 which is right at home with 10.5.

Has anyone heard or used the Zippers Red Shift 587 cam?  It is supposed to be specifically designed for the 110 and is a direct bolt on without having to change springs

Wow, sounds like you are a few weeks behind me on the exact same scenarios.  Same bike, same year.

Failure in the cam chest took out the motor and a new long block is being installed as we speak.

I went round and round on cams.  Spoke to manufacturers, my tuner and read every post on several HD forums.

My configuration is also similar to yours with slip-ons (RCX4.5) that are, according to the experts, too large.

Trying to be clever I wanted a cam that would help now and still be usable down the road if I do the 117 kit or heads (or both).

In the end, I deciding three things:

1) I would replace the RCX's with Fullsac 2.0' which is done
2) I would select a cam that give me the best performance for my bike and riding style, given the CURRENT heads, pistons, displacement, compression, etc.   I will exchange that cam down the road if I do any further upgrades that require a different cam.
3) I would replace the stock lifters with S&S premiums and toss the stock lifters.

So what cam did I select?

TTS100 and TTS150 were the two I finally narrowed my choices, but ultimately I went with the TTS100 for that low end torque.  I rarely run the engine 5000 or more, so the extended top end wasn't as important to me as getting my 1000lbs machine moving.

I will pick up "Lucille" on Tuesday and report to the forum my initial opinions on how I like this cam.  The following week I'm scheduled to bring her to my tuner, who will do his magic.   I'll report again on how she rides after that work is complete.

BTW, cam selection was a hard one for me because I didn't realize how all the components have to match.  Once I grasped that concept, it became an easier decision.   Good luck with your choice.

P.S.  You might check my similar thread:   https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=115637.0

I will be posting my results there.

Here are a few dyno sheets of bikes with CFR mufflers in a mix of otherwise solid parts. You'll see a trend: They all have an early dip that does not recover until about ~3000rpm. This is torque loss you will feel easily in everyday riding situations compared to a bike that has better performing mufflers. When you talk to other CFR owners, they "Don't feel any power loss, bro". They are either too proud or have never ridden a bike with strong low/mid range for reference. For what it's worth, I had great luck with my previous stage 1 build using Kuryakyn Crusher exhaust, NOT the new Maverick series, though. As mentioned, the Fullsac combo also works great (had their headpipe with my Crushers).

Fullsacs muffler choices or Cobra 990 are decent. You will require a tune with this new motor. No canned map. A proper tune with a flash tuner. And the cam choice is not a good or bad proposition, it is a question of what you want to accomplish with the 110" you have to work with that the stock combination doesn't already offer. You may be surprised that with the right pipe choice, including no true dual head pipes, a new stock motor, and re-tune the bike is 100% to your satisfaction.

If you're looking for power (and not so much looks), the D&D Borezilla works VERY well on a 110.
That pipe will let you grow bigger later if you need to and won't hurt the TQ down low either. If
you don't plan on future upgrades

As stated above, find a good tuning shop and let them tune it properly. Canned maps are not that
good, but better than nothing. Harley dealers are constrained by the EPA so You won't even get
what I'd call a decent "canned" map.

As for tuners, i have the V&H FP3.   Wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this tuner?  The dealer of course, said to scrap the FP3 and have a tune done by them when the bike is done.

Zigzag930,

I feel your pain brother.  Ever since my 110 went TU, I have been searching the blogs and found it to be very common with the 110.  I asked the HD techs if it was a common problem in the 110s.  He said not so much the 110s but more common in the 120.  I am not buying that!

Yes dump the FP3, I’m using the TTS. I think you will find it hard to beat in tuners, of coarse it matters that you have some one that knows how to use its

Very common with the 110 CVO motor.  My 09 CVO Road Glide had lifter failure at 46K miles.  My 15 CVO Road glide had lifter Failure at 44K miles, took out engine.  Glade it was still in the 2 year factory warranty.  My 12 CVO Road glide did not have lifter failure, traded with 47K miles.  My 13 CVO King has not had lifter failure, but the motor was built with 1500 miles on it, not factory lifters or springs.

Its very unfortunate.  This is my first Harley.  I have always had Hondas.  There is no comparison to the fit, finish, and comfort of a Harley.  However, I am so frustrated and quite frankly pissed off about this bike taking a chit within the first year of ownership.  I live in Washington and only get about 3 months of summer.  My bike has been in the shop for about a month and now I am looking at about 3 more weeks for the new engine to be installed.  I wish Harley would get their chit together and fix the defective parts.  I am seriously thinking about going back to riding Hondas.  I ride too much to have my bike break down for a long time.
