Lost oil pressure 4,000 miles after 117 upgrade
« on: September 25, 2018, 12:11:22 PM »

So yesterday while going to work, my stator started going out, so after work I limped it back home and on the way home I lost all oil pressure, I just did a 117 Upgrade 4,000 miles ago and its been running fine, when I upgraded I added the S&S Oil Pump and cam Plate. just did a Oil Change the day before so I cant figure out what let go, later today I'm pulling the Spark plugs and the Oil Pressure Sending unit and cranking the motor to see if Oil comes out......I'm Stumped and the Shop AzKikr Customs who did the work closed up last month, I'm screwed

May want to screw in a manual oil pressure gage, pull the plugs and fuel pump fuse and crank it
until the gage tells you weather or not you have pressure. It is possible the sensor is faulty. Cross
your fingers!

Well I could tell it was not getting oil as the lifters started getting noisy, I did shut the motor down right away so as to prevent any damage. Will see tonight, I would really hate to buy a new bottom end.

Could a plugged oil filter cause this?

Did the lifters start clattering?

Ok move forward and fix the issues by inspecting the cam plate and oil pump.

Yes right when I lost Oil Pressure the lifters started chattering, so that's when I shut it down, I did not have a chance to check it last night but hope fully in the next few days. I just think its strange that right after I changed the oil and filter this happened may be coincidence. This new S&S Oil Pump only has 4,000 miles on it and it had been working flawlessly with great pressure. cant think of what would fail internally on the oil pump.

If it was the S&S blue plate and pump, look at the plate in the area where the pressure gear rides for abnormal scoring. May be a problem.  :nixweiss:

just open & up and check it.the S&S pumps are supposed to tolerate more run out than a stock  (or other aftermarket pumps) but can only take so much.

Time to measure runout, and look for debris in the cavities.

I’d add to what Rigid said and cut the oil filter in half and see what is in there.

Have you dropped the oil too see if any metal is in there?

You did use the dowel pins between the pump sections right?

The runout was .04 so well within specs, I don't see any debris or metal shavings in the cam cavity or when I drained the oil

Inspect your lifters and make sure they are intact.  A chunk of something jammed your oil pump and broke the gear.  My opinion, the oil pump is secondary collateral damage to debris.  Now to find the source of the debris...

Not enough clearance between pump and plate. S&S updated the spec a while ago.

.04" runout? WAY too much, unless you meant .004?

If the lifters (or other bearings) haven't fallen apart and crank run-out is within spec then you have to be looking at either a component or installation issue.

Since it seems S&S is aware of an issue (see John Sachs' and HD Street Performance's posts), you need to contact S&S.  They have a warranty, and if the failure was a result of a problem with the pump they should take care of it.  The next question would be, what about the debris from this failure?  There has to be some metal particles somewhere in the engine.  Are they going to pay for inspecting for those pieces and any repairs for damage caused by the pump failure?

Yeah that the $64 question for sure.  Sure hope they step up and do what's right.

Yes the Crank Runout was .004 so that was well within specs from S&S......I dropped the Pump and Plate off at a local S&S Dealer today so I will see what S&S says

Well apparently S&S knows of the issue with this group of pumps, as a few CVO owners who did this 110 to 117 upgrade had the same issue, they replaced my Pump and Cam Plate and the S&S Dealer did not even have to send the parts back for review, Great news!

That's great news!  Kudos to S&S.  Unfortunately you likely won't be able to recover the labor costs but c'est la vie.
