2008 models 6 gallon tank?
« on: June 10, 2007, 09:35:03 AM »

I heard from a reliable source that we could be seeing larger gas tanks.  An extra 40-50 mile range when going across some of the Western states would sure come in handy.  I believe the touring Beemers and Hondas already have  6 gallon tanks.

The GW has 6.5 gallon I'm note sure about BMW (7.0). I think it's a good idea for them to go to a larger tank then you don't have to look for fuel instead of the sites along the way :)

reliable source

An uncited reliable source is still just a rumor to everyone else.  Cite it or don't claim it.  The voices in my head get confused.

CEEJ, that is very true.  An extra 40 miles of cushion would not be a bag thing.  Would rally want to see how it looks though.  There's not really room between the fairing and seat to make it much longer.  So it's going to be wider.  Could easily see it getting a bit funny looking if pushed too far.  Some of the longer range tanks available in the aftermarket now aren't really proportionate to the bikes they mount on.  So would be interested.  But would want to see one too.

The Beemer is 6.2 gallons.

Since the current Harley tanks seem to run right at 5.4-5.5 gallons actual capacity when filled to the bottom of the filler neck, does this mean you'll get an additional 0.5 gallons?  If so, not much of an improvement, maybe 15-20 miles.  I'd rather see them figure out how to make these things return an honest 50+ mpg at normal cruising speeds, and leave the tank capacity alone.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't ride 250 miles (50 mpg times 5 gallons) without stopping to: a.) restore blood flow to the ol' gluteus maximus, and b.) drain accumulated bodily fluids and replenish same.

If that was the journalistic standard, there would be very little to read in the morning paper.  If you prefer, call it a rumor.

The BMW K1200GT has a 6.3G tank (the hot rod touring bike-152hp )
The LT with the older engine has 6.2

I think on anything marketed to be a touring bike a 6 gallon tank is logical

I totally agree Jerry......I've been in situations where I was really nervous, but I carry a length of tubing (for siphoning) just in case.  I think the 5 gallon tank is large enough w/o compromising the looks too much.  Maybe figure how to utilize some of the frame tubing for extra fluid(s) would be a better design.  ;) har!  spyder

I don't think it would make the tank that much bigger...they could go a little wider and taller and it would still look okay...but they really need to bump it up to at least 6.5 gals...that would give just a tad over a gallon more then it holds now. I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I have to stop and stretch at about every 125 miles.  But it would be nice insurance.

How will I get that "Harley" sound when the FLHTC line becomes a bunch of hybrids?
