Tamper proof ECM

No mention of that in any specs yet.  Dealer was told to order new scanners as the old one would not work on the new bikes.  EPA wins. :(

The new scanner I saw was a bluetooth version. Now they can quickly check your bike out without taking it inside and hooking it up to the computer.

Bluetooth is hooking up the portable module to the computer inside. Not bluetooth from your bike.

One of the reasons I got an 07 was the rumour that the 08's wouldn't allow SERT .. hmm perhaps they were true..

Different ECM as far as certain components are integrated into the ECM, and it has to be setup/calibrated at the time of PDI.....

As far as the Digital Tech II.... Yes, it is bluetooth, but the bike still has to be opened up to access the diagnostic ports.....

And Bluetooth only travels so far......

So now, via bluetooth, you can inadvertently ride by a dealer too close, and have them read the diagnostics, discover you changed your settings and addons, and cancel the warranty long distance.  Hehehehe.  Or, simply preventing any changes by anyone except Harley, now its all potential  proprietary items, and piss off a lot of aftermarketeers who, if they want a piece of the new markets, must re-engineer a lot, even down to the minor connector interfaces.

As we noted before in the fly-by-wire discussion, the new throttle system will require changes to the ECM to manage that system, therefore the '08 ECM's will have to change.  This in and of itself does not indicate there is a "tamper proof" intent; it is just the most cost effective way to implement drive-by-wire.  Of course, the folks who sell ECM replacements will be sucking wind until they reverse engineer the Harley ECM and incorporate the drive-by-wire into their products.  I would think the add-on products like the PC would be easy to adapt, since they only modify certain output signals from the stock ECM.  The drive-by-wire data would be a straight pass-through.

There is another possible explanation to the "tamper proof" terminology, one that I thought would apply last year.  The EPA would normally consider something that could rewrite code in the ECM as a defeat device, in violation of the anti-tampering portion of the law.  If you think about it, the one product that fits that description exactly is the SERT.  Last year the non-street legal downloads were removed from Digital Technician, and you had to buy a SERT to access any of the "race" calibrations.  I wonder if '08 is when the SERT disappears for good, under pressure from the EPA?

What are you talking about??????? The Bluetooth is only between the Digital Tech II and the Interface unit that plugs into the diagnostic port.....

As far as the aftermarketeers, thay are fully aware of the inception of variations in technologies, and will adapt quickly to the new line-up should they choose to.....

SERT will be released in the fall at the latest (H version).....

Looks like just another plus for the TMAT, toss out the Harley ecm and stay independent with full range adjustments as usual.  The connectors are different, and I imagine Zippers will be working out the details and interfaces also.
