Has Anyone Replaced The Cams In Their 07/08 CVO 110
« on: December 13, 2007, 05:42:02 PM »

I wasn't considering it till a couple guys at my dealer said it really wakes the motor up.Getting mixed reviews. I'm not really wanting to make it faster per say,but if the cams are poor due to EPA requirements,or it performs "better" with new cams,I will replace them. What cams if any are a good choice?

Maybe I'm not doing it right, but a search isn't helping. Links or advice on the subject is much appreciated. :beerchug:

Assuming you already have a decent set of pipes / AC kit / Tuning device...A set of cams will be a huge improvement in performance. What they will do is increase torque and horsepower and bring the torque in sooner giving you a much more responsive bike. For the 07's you do not need to go gear drive since the hydro tensioners are fairly decent.

For cam choice I would go with a Wood TW7H or the Yuill Bros YB12-SE07 cam sets. Both of these are bolt in for the SE heads. The TW7H is going to perform a bit better than the YB12 as it is a more aggressive cam.

It really depends on your riding style and what you want, IMO  What are you looking for in what rpm range? Then talk with the guys that do this for a living. Which is not me so I'll shut up now. ::)

The dealer is installing Vance and Hines pipes and a SERT today. Of course the cams they are recommending are HD products. I'll see if they are open to other brands. It's a new '08,so they will need to honor the factory warranty with what ever cams they install.

They recommended the SE 257 cams.

I have an '08 fxdse with se257 cams...also have ported heads and 10.5 compression...bike runs great...stock cvo 110's have 9.3 compression and that's too low for 257 cams...I agree with hd-dude's choice of cams in a stock motor

I put the Andrews 32 ,chain dr. {Thank's John} in my 2007 CVO 110" springer. Runs great and backed off the comp. a little too. 90 hp. and 110 tq. with stock 255 {pipes and air cleaner} and 100 hp. and 110 tq. after the cams. You can see the dyno on MSN ,harley tech talk ,under dyno's. Before and after. I just tested the Andrews 54 cams too {John sends them to me} in a stock 2007 { 96"} and that is a great cams too ,for heavy bikes , dressers, roadking.

Compression will dicate what cam you choose. being that cam is based on your riding style make sure you provide what the cam needs other wise your end product may not be what you had thought it would be. For the stock compression there are plenty of cams to choose from. HQ cams, woods, andrews, zippers, R&R to name only a few. I am doing some testing on the andrews 54 now . i plan on using it in several engines sizes. The starting point is a 96 inch with a set of the cnc ported heads out of our power pack kit. The cam is a 204 currently. Once it is dyno tuned , we will swap in the 54 cam then back to the dyno. After that we are going to go to a 103 or a 107 not 100% on that yet. but should be intresting to see it all pans outs.

The 257 cam is a bit large for your current compression, for that I would try woods, hq or andrews ( order of listing is means nothing) for cams that fit your riding stlye. Since you did not list that , hard to give you a better selection version wise. Post that info and you can bet you will get a much better suggestion.

I have an 07 SE Ultra & went with Headquarters Heads & Headquarters 575 cams. Pipes are d&d 2into 1's with the performance baffle. Bike pulls like a freight train closing in on 120tq. What a world of differance.

That's not necessarily true, the cast pistons are fine for all but very extrem high performance motors. The cast pistons are usually a little larger in diameter, .001 than forged and fit the bore better. Which can slightly affect ring seal and cause a little more noise. If you get to aggressive with your cams you may need a piston with valve reliefs. Forged pistons are lighter, so if you go to a larger bore the forged are sometimes recommended, if you don't have the entire assembly, rods, and crank rebalanced because they keep the weight close to the original pistons. This is a personal preference, some feel the need for the stronger forged pistons even though they are not really needed.

GMR have you seen all of the posts in regards to the Andrews 54 Cams on Harley Tech Talk someon has dubbed it "doughnut cam". Have yet to see dyno runs.

Iwas thinking of the Dave Mackie 590 or even the Andrews 54. So far leaning towards the Dave Mackie Cams. Engine is a 04 SE 103" c/w Short Block Charlei (SBC) Vortec Head Work

I would be very interested in your dyno and evaluation.

Unless the '08 110" engine is internally different than the '07 110"engine, the stock pistons in these engines are cast pistons. SE makes forged pistons, but they're not stock on this engine. The stock motor has cast pistons at 9.3:1 CR. The SE Forged are set up for higher compression. I do not have an '08 CVO Parts Manual. But you can't go by the SE catalog, only the CVO Parts Manual. I have not seen an '08 manual to confirm this. But I'd be even more amazed that we still see failures with the '08's, but the engines are different. That would be even scarier than the fact that they haven't fixed them yet! :nixweiss:

Simle to tell if something changed Mark. The P/N for the '07 110" Piston & Ring Assembly (std) is 222184-07. There is no "piston only" P/N in the catalog either. There's no description in the Parts Catalog, but I know these to be cast pistons. I've changed mine already. What's the P/N on this set for the '08's? If something is different, it'll have a different P/N. This is directly from the '07 SERK3 Parts Catalog, P/N 99433-07.

08 are forged. They had some problem in 07 with cast and the heat. When you run cast ,you set them up 'tight'  .001 clearance , forged .002 - .003

Hmmmmm....wonder if those who are getting new engines in the 07's, or even just new jugs and pistons, are getting the new parts?  Could this be part of the "fix" for liner problems?

I am guessing MOCO will never own up to whatever changes they make to solve the head gasket leak fiasco...  Maybe head gaskets, maybe cylinders/liners, maybe cast/forged pistons...

I am feeling pretty good about having replaced ALL of it with non-MOCO parts...Axtell, CR, Cometic, etc. sounds pretty good right now.  What do you think, Howie?   ;)

The 2008 P/N is different.  The P/N in the '08 catalog for the 110" Piston & Ring Assembly (std) is 222284-07.

08 are forged. They had some problem in 07 with cast and the heat. When you run cast ,you set them up 'tight'  .001 clearance , forged .002 - .003

:huepfenlol2: they had problems with cast pistons and HEAT. so now they have problems with HEAT and it rattles when cold!

gotta love it huh dewey?

I am guessing MOCO will never own up to whatever changes they make to solve the head gasket leak fiasco...  Maybe head gaskets, maybe cylinders/liners, maybe cast/forged pistons...

I am feeling pretty good about having replaced ALL of it with non-MOCO parts...Axtell, CR, Cometic, etc. sounds pretty good right now.  What do you think, Howie?   ;)
Scott...

I agree, many times better quality, and usually lower cost than comparable factory parts!!

I have an 07 SE Ultra & went with Headquarters Heads & Headquarters 575 cams. Pipes are d&d 2into 1's with the performance baffle. Bike pulls like a freight train closing in on 120tq. What a world of differance.
What kind of hp  di dyouget with the  575 ??

Great thread,

I'm planning to install the TW7-H from Wood Cams in my 08 SE RK. Have Bassani true Duals, Heavy Breather A/C and currently run Dobeck Performance TFI. Quick questions:

1. Bobby Wood says you can cut the pushrods with bolt cutters and install the SE quick install rods w/o pulling the heads and tank. Anyone tried this?

2. I read earlier in this tread that the SE-257 may be too much lift for the stock compression (SE Catalog says .569 lift)...but the wood cam is .575 and that's ok??? Any thoughts?

3. Any other "must do's" while we're in there?

Ride style; Hard. Good friends with the rev limiter. 2-up 50% of the time. This is my long haul ride so can't really go crazy for reliability purposes (the wife won't take kindly to standing on the side of the road)

1.Haven't done it personally, but my friend who builds motors, does cam jobs this way all the time, if the customer isn't doing any headwork.

2. If they haven't changed anything on the '08's from the '07's, the .575 lift is OK with stock 110 heads. It is on the '07's.

3. Must do's, since you'd like to do this without breaking the motor, not much more you can do. Headwork, compression, TB changes are the next things to look at.

I'd check the crank runout first, before doing any of your work. And make sure you don't have the dreaed 110 leaks, which will require them to break your motor anyway. You can think about your other options then. ;)

You can change cams on an 07/08 without pulling the heads.  This procedure describes the basic process, but the description is not for 07/08 motors - it is for pre 07/08 motors.  Very similiar, but a few subtle differences.

Yea, you correct, I keep forgetting about that!!! ::) But it gives you the basics, unless you do this all the time, you should do like you did, you should refer to you shop manual.

You can check this site, they might have something to give you an idea of HP and TQ.
