It just started about 1.5 hrs ago. Still just 37 or so, so it won't last. Still coming down pretty good. Tomorrow rush hour will be a joke if it decides to stick.  ;D ;D

Chief...been sleeting/snowing a bit over here today as well, but has now changed over to just cold a$$ed rain.  You'd better run to the store with the 2 million other people, and get your milk and bread.... :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

The ice storms are the real killer. We don't have enough removal equipment to handle anything more than a couple of inches. If we get snow that melts then refreezes, this place comes to a screeching halt. Last time that happened I jumped in my old shaggy '78 Chevy Van and found me a big parking lot. That was some fun!  ;D ;D ;D

Oh yea...I'll bet I couldn't find a dinner roll on the shelf at Publix down the street from my house right now, or a quart of milk.  WTF's up with the milk part of that equation anyway...there ain't that many babies around to need ALL the milk in the store, if the power goes out, the milk's going to ruin unless it's cold enough to keep it out on the porch.  I guess they need it to wash down the peanut butter 'n Jelly... :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

That snowman creation above looks strangely similar to Algores Nobel Peace Prize.......   ;D

Been in the dairy biz about forever, and people go to the store & buy milk, bread, and water among other stuff until it's gone.  Terry is right, bet Bham was cleaned out hours ago.  Snow is good for my biz short term, & if the power goes out, many folks don't have enough sense to set their milk outside in the cold so it goes bad in the fridge in the house.  So it ends up even better.

Not sure why people do that buying frenzy deal, but they do, and have for years.

BTW, its balmy here in Floriduh & lots of tourists are here from the frozen wasteland enjoying getting fleeced our wonderful weather.  :)

I used to get a kick out of the same type of behavior when I lived in FL and a hurricane was headed our way. You couldn't find a jug of water if your life depended on it.

Growing up in Miami we'd wipe the tub out with bleach and fill it up when a storm was getting near. In an emergency, that would be all you needed to get by if you thought you might lose the pump. It was no big deal, just what everyone did. Not like that anymore.

We keep some spare batteries & I make sure I have Coleman fuel or propane on hand but when the hurricanes come, the only thing I concern myself with is beer.  Usually have enough of that.  The milk & bread thing is some kind of human lemming behavior IMHO. Moved to Florida in '95 & the neighbors were having hurricane parties instead of freaking out (we are inland) so we went with the flow.  If one hits the Keys, we may have a simpatico party.  Have helped with cleanups & they are a mess.

Bet school is called off tomorrow for the multi-county region around Hotlanta......

Chuck,
That looks like the DC area.  As soon as the white stuff starts coming down, everyone panics and they roll up the sidewalks and close everything.  Being a Minnesota native it always cracks me up when winter comes around here in Northern Virginia.  We're supposed to get a couple of inches tomorrow, so the afternoon commute home should be just "ducky".
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

Lots of happy kids & lots of parents who may be pulling their hair out by noon or so tomorrow.  ;D

From personal experience, the driving on ice sucks most everywhere.  Does not snow often in the south (deep south) & it figures that people would not be as proficient driving in it.

I'm entertained by this thread.  You guys rock!  I was in FLA for Christmas a few years back and while we were gone my home town received 7 feet of snow in about 3 days.  We drove home through Georgia and the Carolinas in a light snow and it was like a scene from "I Am Legend".  There was maybe an inch on the ground.  We stopped just north of Columbia and checked in to a motel and went next door to order a pizza and they told me I had to hurry up and order before they closed.  I had a good laugh with them when I told them we were on our way back to Buffalo and would be there the next day and nothing was closed.

I really enjoy the heavy snow that slows the world down a little bit.  I'm with Iski, let the others get the bread and milk, I want to make sure I have enough BEER!

Was born/raised where it snowed maybe 2 times a year, so was not used to it early on.  Job & travel has required me to work in various parts of the frozen winter wasteland.  Driving in it while not fun sometimes is something I do on occasion.  The frenzy & frantic behaviors contribute to the accident quotients.  That's only one reason schools close, etc.  Superintendents & various govt. folks do not wish to be held accountable if a tragedy occurs, & the road clearing mechanisms in some of the country are extremely inadequate as Chuck referred to earlier.  In other words, its just cheaper & safer to let the stuff melt than deal with it's removal a couple of times a year. Jgeorge - it's important to have priorities!

I guess I better stop travelling south.  The last time I was in Orlando it did the same and was pretty cold there Monday night when we went down there.  Maybe the tail wind sucked the snow most of they way, at least to Hotlanta :huepfenlol2:

Need a blower yet?

I was hoping to use it as an excuse to work from home today, but it didn't work out that way. Traffic was light so that was a plus.

You are so right.  I often wonder exactly why it is I live in this climate - I have yet to discover the upside of cold!

There's only one upside I can think of, and it has chairlifts and hot tubs involved...

They are prediciting a chance of a bit more of the white stuff for this area Friday night/Saturday...it's always a guessing game where the line will be between snow/rain.  The two day break will give the stores a chance to stock up on bread and milk again.... :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

It began to snow this morning and has not let up all day here in the frigid north.  Temperatures are predicted to drop into negative territory for the weekend and next week.

I used to do the chairlift activity you refer to, but there was an incident with a youngster on a snowboard and my right knee a decade or so ago - so now I am relegated to hot tub activity...  :-\

How many therms or Btu's (typically) do you throw at the snow and ice to make it go away?   :nixweiss:

Ok, never thought to heat electically.

How many kw's (or Mw's) does it consume?  Electrically heated?   :confused5:

Love the Curtis.  Is that made by Curtis Wright?  The old factory still stands in Buffalo.

Howie has a different thread about his snow melter.  He has something like two low temp gas boilers connected in parallel with each producing 150k BTU or there abouts.  His driveway, sidewalk, and back yard are plumbed with tubing under concrete or pavers to circulate the warm water through on demand.  I'm too lazy to find the thread for reference here but I just saw it a couple days ago.  Nice set up, if you can afford all the concrete.  I'd also have to think you need to keep it above freezing simply to keep the lines from freezing and breaking inside the concrete.

I designed mine for about 200 BTU's per sq.ft. (output to the slab). I melt about 2000 sq.ft. of my property. ;)

It's not electric. It's radiant Hot Water (actually a 50/50 mix of Propylene Glycol). It's heated from my primary heating system thru a plate and frame heat exchanger. :o

Actually 3 condensing boilers at 140,000 BTUH each, piped together in a primary loop, primary/secondary system, 12 zones of heat, thermal storage, instantaneous DHW, 2 zones with 6 loops each of snow melting! That's a little more precise Jim, but there's a lot more to it! ???

It's propolylene-glycol anti-freeze, not water. No freezing issues.

Here's the link for it:

Hoist, I hear it's going to be cold for your party.  Just have people role around on your driveway to warm up.

Shouldn't you be cleaning bathrooms or something instead of posting?

Ya'll don't have those self-cleaning CVO bathrooms too? :nixweiss:

We're actually supposed to get a couple of inches here between midnight tonight and tomorrow afternoon, then into the teens tomorrow night.   Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.  I've got my bread and milk, so I'm good to go  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

I'll post pics if it actually happens, 'cause it's about once every 5 years around here...
Possibility of some more snow here this weekend also. My priorities are a little different then yours though. I've got to get me some beer, Wild Turkey, and Gentleman Jack. :drink: :huepfenlol2:

Cool link. Thanks.

I've run out of Boynton to dive a couple of times. "Damn the torpedos... Full Speed Ahead!"
