RPMs while putting around
« on: April 11, 2005, 12:43:01 PM »

Was cruising around Ocean Drive here in Newport yesterday.  It is mostly a 25-30mph leisure drive.  I seem to be at around 2000 revs for this kind of ride.  Same thing on the leisurely 40mph scenic drives.  Yeah, at 80mph I rev at 3200-3300 or so.  Was wondering if lugging the engine is really aroun 1200, 1500 or 2000 revs.

What do others do?

I try to keep mine up around the 2k point. It seems to lug a bit below that....

I try to keep mine at or above the 2,000 mark also.  I believe that that's the recommended starting rpm for dynoing a bike, also.

My dealer told me to NEVER let it go below 2,000 rpm in any gear (except while in 1st, obviously), as lugging an engine is much harder on an engine than the higher revs.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, WFP,
I agree with JCZ and hd-dude. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Everytime I ride, I also roll the throttle, or accelerate and decelerate, if you will. That is to say when I'm in high gear, I never let it operate at a steady RPM, more especially, High RPM.  In my mind, this practice allows the oil pump to perform better, all around.  High RPM for long distances is NOT good for your Motor! [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]  I do not now, nor have I ever used cruise control.  I know some will say I'm wrong, because of the new oil pumps and Twin-Cam Motors.  But, that's what I do.  You do as you please.  Later--HUBBARD

Welcome Fast Eddie,  Any notorious friend of Hubbards is a friend of ours.  So, ya got some tall tales to tell on Hubbard do you?  ehhhhh ehhhhh!  I will enjoy watching them be shared. By chance have you got a couple of days to share a weekend with 50 some of us like minded folks, meeting in NC the end of the month ?  Hubbard, Otis and Shrader all said no at first too, but within a couple of weeks, changed their minds and holiday plans and agreed to come play.  Would love to hear tales around the hot tub, gazebo behind the motel and listen to the water flow in the river.  What says you?   [smiley=1syellow1.gif] [smiley=bigok.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

My Heritage Springer doesn't have a tach, neither does my Softail Springer so I don't know what I turn for R's, BUT the TC88B motor doesn't like low RPM's like the old steel does.  Low RPM's are not very kind to your rear belt either.  Drive with the power band in the "smooth engine" range.  With road ahead I'm not looking at the tach.   [smiley=laugh.gif]

Hard to imgine you'd ever cause any heartache at 3000 rpm's, even at 25mph.  I'll agree with a lot of others in saying 1500 can cause some problems. Remember, that's the big break in warning given; never let the bike fall below 2000 rpm's. These motors can handle more rpm's than we give them credit for.

I usually stay between 2600-3000  depending on the road. If it's real twisty I try to keep the revs up a bit more for better engine braking.

The rule of thumb I've always heard is if you open the throttle and all you get is noise but no acceleration, then you are lugging it.  So it is not a single RPM, but includes conditions such as what gear you're in, head-wind, riding two-up, climbing a hill, etc.

If you're not accelerating when you grab a handful, you're lugging it.

I have a 107 build in my 2005 Heritage, AND IT WON'T PLAY WELL AT ALL UNDER 2K.  It took some time to get used to being in a lower gear than my buddies who were just barely lugging their engines, but YOU NEVER GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.

Oil pressure is the key here, if it's low you are more likely to damage something, and I guess that's the key to keeping good fresh oil in your scooter, it tends to help oil pressure now I heard that the Fueling oil pump had 30% better pressure a real plus for all riding styles if the numbers are accurate. I have no personal experience with the Fueling pump if anyone does please sound off!!!

Very true - oil pressure is one critical element.
