Below is the link to pictures of the tensioners that came off my SERK. The one on the right was on the outside and showed some wear. It was the shoe on the inside of the cam plate, shown on the left, that was the problem.

http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=eg_gen;action=display;num=1110595812;start=45

At first glance when the cam cover was pulled off everything looked normal. I am not sure if you can see the inside tensioner without pulling the cam plate. Make sure your mechanic checked it.

You need to know if he checked the tensioner on the inside chain. The outer one will look great and the inner one thats hard to get to will be crapped out.
Just passing on what I have seen.
Dave

Right on Dave, I had checked mine at 50K, and then got a bit nervous after seeing a set out of a buddies 2000 TC-88...at 40K, I decided to get it done, man am I glad. I will post some pics as soon as I get them loaded, and can figure out the method. The rear one was down to the side plate holder, NO damage to the chain, Luckily.

I had the same issue a few weeks back on the 03 RK. The engine work and 251 CAM had about 12K on them (10 months) and the service guy asked me if he could check them while he was fixing the broken Rinehart bracket. Sure enough, the back one was 80% gone. I could not figure out (yech had no answer either) why the front one looked brand new as if it never touched the chain.

Most of the pressure is on the rear tensioners. That is why I am going with GEAR DRIVE CAMS. Then I will have peice of mind when I am on the road! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Well if I had an Xtra $650 and change, I would change to GD also, but I don't, so now i am sorta stuck with the stock 203 cams and new tensioners. At least I now have S&S adjustables, which make it easier to do the job. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Willie I have not gone into the motor as of yet. So that gives me a little time till I get the cams. You made a good choice with the S&S adjustables. They will make the job easier. How often are you going to check your tensioners?

The thing that scares me is they can go bad at any time. I'm also wondering if the actuall chain tension(slack or lack of) has anything to do with premature wear from the factory. I have talked to factory techs and some have told me they see no problems with the tensioners. Regardless the timing will suffer with the chains.  That is one of my main decision makers. Stay safe.

Here are the pics of the Adjusters......note the one on the left is the rear one, that you can't see with a simple inspection.

WILLIE that looks real bad. The bad part about it is I don't think you can see it that well without pulling the cam plate.

Yup you got that right. all you can see is the front one, and it will look like it will go another 3-5K......NOT. [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] As you can see the rear one was running on the metal guide.

I was real glad that I was able to get it done before my trip to NC next week. Now if the weather would just cooperate. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Willie D, it looks like you also lost some metal off the tensioner. Did the mechanic check out the scavege side of the oil pump? If you start to have excesive oil out of the air cleaner you might need a new oil pump a well.

Mackcr,
I was very carefull to look for anything that might cause the oil pump to fail, but so far NO problems. I will let you know when I get back from Mooresville,NC on Sunday. It will be a 1500 mile round trip +/- ! I am using the newer SE air cleaner, and to date have not had any oil problems.......time will tell I guess. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Thanks for your input, I have really enjoyed this site, only wish I had found it years ago.
