Another 110 POS
« on: April 20, 2008, 11:26:17 PM »

Was going to put this under "Ride Report" but thought the significance of the end of the ride over shadows the report aspect.
Beautiful weekend, 10 of us leave Memphis Saturday morning headed to Birmingham for the AMA super bike races. Weather was great and the races were as thrilling as you can imagine, plenty of crashing but with no real injuries. Did some great roads around Leeds and stopped by 29 Dreams for dinner. Food was quite tasty plus a very good band with a million bikes, with most importantly, ice cold $2.00 long necks. We stayed Saturday night at a Holiday Inn in Pell City which is very close to Talladega and with the race there this week, lot's of pre-race set up crews were there with plenty of huge NASCAR trailers. Not mention what seemed like most of the BMW riders in the USA. Those guys really travel, they were from all over and all came in just for the races, since there was a BMW in the super bike events. Got up this morning to a sunny 80 degree day and we took lots of fantastic twisty roads up to Rocket HD just west of Huntsville. There on the floor was a near perfect 01 SERG with only 7K miles on it, complete with all the extras you'd want; 103, SERT, Hooker Headers, SEAC, and in "as new" condition. List for 18,895 so I offered quite a bit less to see how bad they wanted some business, they didn't! Best I could get them down to was 18,200 BUT my friend then started negotiating. He did much better than me, he traded his 03 RK w/ 24,000 miles on it for the SERG for damn near even money. Great bike in great shape at a great deal, I wanted it but I'm happy for him and I learned who I need to get to negotiate my bike purchases from now on. Anyway back to the ride, we headed back on the road and just when we got in Iuka, MS, about 100 miles from home, Dave on his 07 red SE Ultra decides to fling oil everywhere. I mean a classic 110 meltdown and I must add it had already crapped out before and had received the "fix", the new special gasket that is touted as the cure all. (It ain't!!!!) As we were all standing there in the gas station lot watching the oily mess one of the other proud 110 owners that had already crapped out a few months ago decided to take a look at his motor. You I'm sure guess it, yep, oil seeping out all over the motor. And yes, he had the new gasket done several months ago, you know, the latest "FIX".
After waiting all afternoon on a return call from HOG about the tow that evidently was not going to show up, we (almost) all rode home to Memphis, picked up a truck and trailer and drove back to Iuka to get the bike and brought it home. So it and the other 110 are heading to the stealership in the morning to get ??????, I have no idea what they are going to get since they both had previously been "fixed" with the new gaskets. It is now getting to the point if you are going on a ride outside the city limits you have to make sure there are trailers available to pick up the 07 and o8 bikes when they crap out. VERY SAD, thanks MoCo!
Here are some pictures, if you have a 110, you better not look.

Of course I have to throw in a picture of old faithful Elvis standing there laughing at the situation. He performed perfectly as always and can kick the chit out of these 110's, even when they are not flinging oil everywhere.

Ain't he, I send Big B thank you notes regularly for the great job he did with Elvis. Saturday was a 4 to 5 hundred mile day, on any other bike I owned that would have stiffened me up but Elvis leaves me ready to keep on truckin. :2vrolijk_21:

Looks like MoCo is trying to relive the old days. Remember the strips of carpet and news papers, you'd throw them out when they'd soaked up enough oil and put down a new one?

Hey MoCo.......When will this end! Does anyone have a 110 that has NOT had problems?  I assume there are but with the start of this riding season I'm beginning to have doubts.

Black Diamond,

I don't know how to answer this, because this is my second 110 engine. I have approx. 2k on this engine so far, and with no problems.

The 110 Seeping Eagle has got to go. I hear the 113 is better.

Hey, ever tried the new Oil Harley Just released, they put the floor dry right in it!

Ya gotta laugh, or you'll cry. I know, been there.

Ride on!

I read all this and just hope I make it to Sedona and thru the trip before my 110 does its thing. I have 2600 miles on it now and will probably have close to 4k before I leave Austin Texas for Sedona.

Sedona is over 1k from Austin so wish me luck.

From those pictures, and the location of the puddle in front, my guess is that the flywheels scissored and took out the crank position sensor right by the outboard end of the oil filter. I've heard when that happens, it pukes oil everywhere which is a good description of what I see there. I've never heard of any gasket failure on the 110 that produced that much oil.

Please keep us updated on the cause and the prescribed fix.

I don't much know about those 110 engines ( since I have a trouble free 103 in mine ),
but can you turn a 110 into a 113 and solve the problem?

Not easily. The 110 has an o-ring groove milled into the edge of the spigot hole in the case. The 113 requires boring the case, but not enough to eat through all of the groove. HogBreath just ran into this last week planning to go to 113. I like the idea of the 113, but it looks like you need to start out with a 96" case to get there.

For what it is worth, I was just outside Toronto when mine starting leaking - and I put another 2000 miles on before returning home - and then another 500miles or so before I tore it down.  Other then a bit of a mess it was fine....  You'll be o.k.    :2vrolijk_21:

Yep and it doesn't use an O-ring, it uses a base gasket. And the 113 can work fine the same way. The O-ring groove is only an issue on 110 cases IF YOU WANT TO RETAIN THE O-RING DESIGN. Then you can't go to a 113. But if you use the base gasket design, that's why God invented sealant! ;)

Axtell will even tell you it's ok to use belt and suspenders.  Base gasket and o-ring.  Their final cosmetics may leave a little to be desired.  From a purely functional perspective, however, these Axtell jugs seem to be stout parts indeed.  Scott is starting to run his now.  You've got a few miles on yours.  I've begun to collect a few on mine (though without the underlying 110 concerns that you've faced).  Nice to have big beefy parts....

So this becomes the 2nd and 3rd motors I have heard of with the "latest, latest" head gaskets that have failed... I suppose with riding season beginning in more and more of the country that we will start hearing of more "latest" gasket failures....   >:(

Yep, as Don mentions, I am using both the o'ring and base gasket with the stock 110 cases and the Axtell cylinders.  I put another 150 miles on over the weekend.. I am still in break in mode - but so far so good...   :2vrolijk_21:

Chuck, doesn't Axtel make a 'drop in' 110 cylinder that will fit the stock crankcases without modification?

Jerry

Yes they do. I was responding to a question about moving up to a 113 inch motor. This was the direction Ken was heading until the o-ring issue became apparent. It's all hearsay for me as I'm never looked into it, just parroting what I''ve heard. SQAWK!!

I really want to get an 09 (depending on color options) but I am also really paranoid.  I am no wrench and I don't have the temperment for this kind of crap.  If I had experienced the problems some have I would already own a BMW.  Our local dealer still denies they have seen any 110's with the problem.

Maybe if those that haven't had the problem would speak up I would feel better......assuming they are out there.

Billy, Thanks. I was begining to think there was no such thing as a trouble free 110. Here's hoping your scooter is one of many non-leaking 110's.

Willie,

There's bound to be a few out there that haven't failed yet, if for no other reason than low mileage or blind luck.  You may have a hard time getting folks to admit they haven't had a problem yet, because the ones I remember posting that information last year came back later and told us that their bikes failed after all.  I think some folks are afraid to say anything and jinx themselves.

If you're planning on an '09, odds are good you won't be dealing with a 110 anyway.  Word going around is that '08 is the last year for that POS.  Unfortunately, I have no idea what conglomeration of parts they intend to replace it with.  Maybe they can get S&S or TPI to build something for them???

While we were out of town this past weekend, another friend that was not with us had his blow for the third time. Worst part of his situation is his is not a CVO, he bought an 08 Ultra and then did this to himself. He paid extra to bring a perfectly fine 96 up to a POS 110. He begged the stealer today to please just get him a 103 and replace the mistake, no luck. Guess why, they now have the sure "FIX"!
