Dash Indicator Lights 101
« on: June 02, 2005, 10:45:01 AM »

My wife's bike is a 2003 Fat Boy and last night the little dash light that looks like an engine would come on while runnng or when ignition switch was on but not yet started up. It wasn't always on it would kind of come and go......

I looked in the cure all HD Service Manual and all it said was "if this light comes on take  the bike to a Harley Dealer for service". [smiley=confused5.gif]

What are some of the basic items I should check first to see if I can solve this issue on my own??? The bike is running great otherwise. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

DC,

 Yes it is fuel injected.

And by the way I just totally rebuilt the bike last weekend. Changes included new custom paint set, chromed out the front end, six spoke wheels/rotors/pulley, all braided lines, chubby bars w/wires run internally and some other knick knack chrome piece's.

I'm mentioning all the changes in case I made a rookie mistake somewhere along the way. And yes I had to take the internals out of the original tank and install them back into the new one.

the light comes on as a check when powered up and goes out.  If it comes back on and goes out again, it means that the ECM logged a code - and will store it for 50 ignition cycles.  If it comes back on steady that means that there is a current code.

It could be anything - even as simple as a code thinking that it misfired if it has aftermarket pipes on it.
