Back from my trip and guess what....
« on: July 15, 2008, 12:27:51 PM »

4410 miles in my 2-week trip and I've now joined the leakers club on engine number 2.  >:(

And there's some VERY nasty noise when cold somewhere in the valve gear....

I'm assured that there are to be recall notices sent out for all 110s shortly though.  Anyone heard about it?

Jim, we've been beating that horse over here for quite some time now. We keep checking our mail boxes, but nothing yet. :nixweiss:

What I was told - and supposedly this came from the horse's mouth - is that recall letters would go out shortly, once the dealers had been issued with sufficient kits to to the bikes.  And they were specific that it was imminent.

That's the same story we've heard over here too, but it isn't happening as quickly as it was first described it would happen. So, we wait. :nixweiss:

Originally I was told parts to dealers first and second week of June and letters to follow.

Yep, and everyone's getting 25% of their purchase price back for the trouble.  It ain't happening.

Jim,

Too bad - you are now on your second leaking motor.

Hopefully will hear something after the dealer meeting next week.

It is very discouraging to hear all these problems with the 110's. I was wondering if anyone knows if there was any difference in the model years. Is a 2007 more likely to leak than a 2008? any Ideas? KB

For the most part, yes. There is a rumored running change for the cylinders, but nothing for certain.

Don't you think that if the parts were indeed sent to the dealers before the letters, that we would know about it? I mean, some of us are pretty close to out dealers and someone would spill the beans once the parts arrived.

:indian_chief:

That rumor is so very (very very) doubtful without a revised part number though.  Without the distinguising part number most local parts counters will never be able to distinguish between old and new stock.  Such is a recipe for inadvertent future problem that even the MoCo knows better than to accept.

Either the parts didn't make it, or the dealers are REALLY good at keeping secrets. ;)

I agree totally. I'm just too lazy to call the dealer and see what the current number is for the cylinders. ;)

2007 or 2008 ! I think it's same !
The last WE, I was with my chapter for a trip in Switzerland.
In our chapter, we are three members with CUSE3 delivered in February and March 2008.
The first leaking had 6000 miles.
Now, I've 3700 miles with mine and I wait the fateful leak.

With the rumoured "final solution" so imminent, I'm wondering what the Moco would tell the dealer to do if I asked for mine to be fixed now, before the mythical letter?  Would they tell them to do it with the existing part numbers, or would they send whatever the fix comprises....?

My perception is the quota on '07's is close to 100%, while the '08's have not been reported as bad.

Unless they have received new information, they would just fix it with the parts the MoCo is currently recommending.  Service Mgrs. have not indicated a knowledge of a new fix, but some "other folks" have indicated one is imminent.

If mine were leaking now I would wait until at least next week, after the dealer meeting.  If nothing new is offered, there will be a LOT of unhappy folks out here......

Yep - although any logical company wouldn't do a repair just before a recall, I wouldn't put it past the MoCo....

I think if you took it in now and they knew of a fix in the pipes they would just tell you they are waiting on parts. After all some of us have waited for a month for parts to come in, don't ask me how I know.

Will drive ya to  :drink: :drink:

Jim

Not sure why they would not put out a notice to their service folks, and wondering out loud if the gasket/cylinder combo they put in my bike is the rumored "fix".  Service Mgr. in May was quick to suggest a front/rear cylinder/gasket combo replacement, and have not heard of any failures from bikes fixed since a little before that point in time.  Too few miles on the fix - maybe?  I have about 5k on the bike since & will put another 3k or so on it before Sept.

Very best of luck to you on this issue, Jim.  If past experience is a good indicator, HD will step & up fix them (or maybe they have already & the recent stuff is part of their "fix field test") but it's just a matter of time...

I'm starting to think we'll be getting a letter telling us to go to our dealer to get the latest gaskets and o-rings, instead of waiting for the leak and then going in for the repair. They've figured out they'll be doing it anyway, why not look pro-active and do it now.

Lots of new parts.... I don't think so anymore.

Cylinders I'd hope for.

And what about all the crank runout problems.....

And what about all the crank runout problems.....

There have been some, but no where near the number of leaks. No way in hell will they be going inside. I initially was hopeful for new cylinders as well, but I'm now convinced they're going to try to make it work with the hard parts we've got, just better seals at the interfaces. To me, this means gaskets and o-rings.

Man, I hope I am so dead wrong!!!

Also, since the warranty work is allotted by the MoCo for "x" hours & it takes "x+" hours to do the repair properly, dealers are not all that happy about a repair on this, either.

That could explain some of the multiple failures, with some wrenches trying to button the job up on allotted book time rather than doing every step as needed.

Maybe that's why so much crap on mine was still loose when I got it back. The egg timer went off and they stopped working on it. ;)

Maybe that's why so much crap on mine was still loose when I got it back. The egg timer went off and they stopped working on it. ;)

:indian_chief:

Forget the exact book time allowed, but it was something like 4 hours & believe mine took about 6.  Had an O2 sensor not plugged in - no biggie. Figure if the tech is getting paid for 4 & working 6+, it kinda stalls his incentive to do a stellar job.....

On my bike it seems that the alloted time was five hours, and the service manager said they could never finish it within the Moco allotment.

That's the trouble with some of these warranty jobs - nobody including us ends up all that happy about it.

Better to get it done right from the factory.

Talked to the dealer on Monday their ordering new cylinders, heads, pistons, rings, and gaskets. my is leaking for the second time in 16K They also told me that there is no difference in the 07A gasket to the 07B gasket. They said something about a year change or something? I just hope they get it fixed for the last time now.  no leaks please!

Well I'm on a road trip and now with 13k on my new motor it has started to leak - not much but some oil on the cylinder.  So I await the 'fix' also.  What about the new cylinder head mentioned in another post?  My first motor went out because of rear cyl exhaust valve guide so this is some improvement.  Now if they'll just get a new cylinder we should be good to go.  Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. :2vrolijk_21:

My first motor went out for the valve guide too, and my new little leak (at 9k on the 2nd motor) is a little one too, so our bikes are leading parallel lives... :-)

Not only that Jim - I think the engineers for the 110 must be in a parallel universe that is 180 degrees out of phase with ours!

And the factory test riders who logged those tens of thousands of miles in hostile environments like death valley!  ;)
