K&N Oil Filter
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:08:19 AM »

Just thought I would find out what Ya'll think about using the K&N.
Dealer said that the MoCo has changed filter material, and it is better than the old OEM filters.... [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I have been using 20w50 HD for the entire 64K and the HD filters. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've read a test report sometime in the past year that rated the K&N oil filter as better than the 10 micron H-D filter, both in retained contaminants and in bypass performance.  When internal pressure builds up in an oil filter, there is a bypass valve that shunts the unfiltered oil directly to the engine to prevent major failures.  It appears that the H-D filter bypasses more often and at less pressure drop than the K&N.

BTW - I'm using the K&N (KN171C) both for the above reason as well as that nifty 17mm nut on the end for removal.  Beats the heck out of a regular oil filter wrench.

As I recall the K&N is a 30micron filter as opposed to HD which is 10micron.  The problem is the 10 micron plugs up (which happens often) and the bypass kicks in which means you have unfiltered oil circulating in the motor,  the K&N while not as fine tilters longer before it plugs up if at all.  Think it was thunder press that had an article about this about a year ago,  changed after reading the article and have been very happy.  Buy the way the K&N is about 2  bucks more than the HD filter.

Actually, Direct Parts sells the K&N for $12.41 plus shipping ($6.95 for orders up to $99).

All 3 of my bike's get the K&N Oil Filter and Mobil 1 V-twin Synthetic Motor Oil every 2000 miles.

With Redline MTL in the primaries and Redline Shock Proof Heavy in the Tranny.

From what I've read both here and in print, this combo is tough to beat.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanks to all of you for your comments, I think I will be using the K&N from now on. A riding buddy and builder friend have purchased a case of them, and will allow us to buy a cost of $12 each, so we save on shipping and No tax. In Michigan that's 6%, so it is quite a big saving. I will continue to use the regular 20w50 HD oil, and New Formula + in the primary. I just can't justify spending $9 a quart for the Syn3. I had considered swithching to Amsoil, but after 64k on regular oil......well, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Thanks again, WD

Just curious.  I like the K&N also and bought 4 of them from a shop that was going out of biz, but since I added a touring oil cooler to my 106 E-Glide, it won't fit. The K&N is about a quarter inch longer, and  it won't fit past the crank sensor. This bike is for sale, but does the K&N fit the SE Glides? [smiley=bigok.gif]

The KN171B/C (black/chrome) is the specified part number per K&N, and it fits just fine on my '05 SEEG - not even close to the sensor.  It's possible that you got the extra long filter instead of the 171.  Did you add an adaptor to the existing oil filter mount for the oil cooler?  That would space the filter over further and perhaps cause a problem also.
