STOCK HEADS
« on: September 16, 2005, 02:53:48 PM »

I know all you guys with 103's have S.E. heads those of us with the 2002 95 inchers have stock heads.  I want to upgrade the heads, more air more compression  (i'd like to be around 10 to 1 but mainly I want to be able to go to a gear drive cam over 540 lift which I am told won't work with the stock valve springs. A mechanic friend of mine says he has had a lot of good feedback on the Edelbrock Power Package which comes with heads, pistons and 619 lift cams (gear drive of course).  So do I have my heads worked on, Buy the Power Package or buy S.E. heads and then install a gear drive by S&S, Andrews.........? I would buy the SE heads from Benjy's or one of the other 20% off dealers and use S&S 570 cams.  Lots of guys run that combo on another board and thoise two play together real well.  To maximize the build, have the SE heads cleaned up first.  Then you could sell your heads and recoup some cash.

Personally I would take my stock heads and send them off for some TLC with a good builder they can shape / port / polish the heads add the needed seats / valves and valve springs and you would be better off since they LOOK Stock.   Next ask the head guy to match them up with a cam / pistons and boom your off and running.

Packages are great, but they are mass production and generally not matched to each individual need / want.  By doing this you will be able to get what you want vs. over the counter bolt in that maybe close or could be exactly what you want not saying it cant, but I  prefer to let the guy who is going to do the heads to match all the rest that way I come back to one guy if its not what I want vs. it was a package of stuff.

If he wont give you a number he will stand behind then I wouldnt do it.   If he will then get it on paper where he is accountable for it.   It will cut the bull right then and there.

Stickman,
Port your stockers. This way they can be set up and optimized for your combination,or a suggested combo by the person that does the porting.

thanks guys. That makes alot of sense. If I want a little more compression will they deck the heads or should I go with different pistons.  Also while it's down I thought of having the heads and jugs diamond cut.  Has anyone out there had this done?

Most of the head builders I've talked with , or read posts from seem to prefer boosting the compression from the head side rather than the piston side.  I've only seen a couple of the diamond heads , talked with the folks at Club Hog , they look sharp and apprently help a bit. With a powdercoated head/cylinder they look killer , although the powdercoat can raise the temps from what I've read.

When in Reno
Do as the people in Reno do that want horsepower.
Call Freedom Cycles.
775-358-3500
Ask for Brad or Rick
Chip wanted the best to work on his bike so he shipped it 2600 miles to Freedom.
They deliver!
Ask hd-dude, Vanamal, Lets Roll etc.

I can't speak for the 95 upgrade, but I picked up my 103 SEEG today from the dealer after having them install the 10-5-1 pistons, 257 gear drive cams, and ported heads.  Didn't get any miles to speak of today, but OH BABY! OH BABY! OH BABY! it really woke the bike up.  What I used to get at 4000 RPM, come in at 2500.  Can't wait to stretch it out, but we had a front come in and I barely made it home dry.

The wrench said an upside down push rod.  The service mgr said the download was wrong.  I suspect the push rod.  The wrench was really pushing the job to get it to me by 3 PM and get me on the road to Fayetteville and was using a helper.

Gotta say, they cut me some slack on the bill and the bike stands up just fine.  I will probably get the RT and dress it up a little.  They mapped it to the stock SE pipes.  I bought the VH true duels with SE heat shields.  I think they can be tuned more precisely but an HD dealer isn't going to do it.

Craw, the 25155-00 is the 257 cam.  I think what he was suggesting is that it wasn't a gear drive.  HD hasn't seen fit to offer us gear drive cams themselves yet.  This begs the question, however, did the dealer tell you it was a "257 gear drive."

I thought that is what he said but the invoice doesn't state it.  I'll look it up in the SE catalogue when I get home tonight.  Surely they have a picture.

Sure hope they didn't tell you it was a gear drive set CD.  Harley simply doesn't offer us one.  The SE catalog is online here though:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Racing/screamin_eagle_parts.jsp?locale=en_US

Is the guy that told you it was gear drive the same one who said he got a pushrod in upside down?

This is what gear drive looks like in a red SEEG.

SE06:  Well it sure doesn't look like that, because I saw the bike when it was broken down.

You would think a dealer would know the difference.

But, it if runs good and you're happy with it, all is cool.

If I had ordered gear drives I would agree.  In this case, I asked for Super High Output kit.  He volunteered the gear drive comment.  Makes me wonder.  My partner called the other dealer, and he explained just as you guys that HD doesn't have it, only Andrews and S & S.

We think that as long as it took and the trouble with compression, then maybe it was a first experience for someone.

Kinda think GC_Super hit it on the "Head"
