Fuel filter replacement
« on: January 22, 2009, 09:22:52 PM »

Does any/every body change their fuel filter every 25K as stated in the book?  It's a pain to do and I understand that here in Ca the rubber hoses off the fuel pump should also be replaced  because of a high failure rate due to our gas here. Our almost 2 year old bikes have about 27K on them and I made the mistake of actually reading the maintenance table in the manual. I seem to remember pulling my 05 apart for some reason and it wasn't much fun. Maybe it wes just me though :nixweiss: Roger

I changed mine at 28,000 miles and is not hard to do with a manual.  One of the plastic hoses comes with the filter at around $60.00  .. I would not take a chance and change it.  Also, I believe it is hard on the fuel pump when the filter becomes more restricted.

Agree with you there! I have lost a few pumps on my trucks. I will check the manual for procedure, Thanks, Roger

HD-Dude did mine on the '05 SEEG when he serviced it @ about 25,000 +/-. Also changed out the little plastic "accordian" type plastic hose at the same time. The hoses were known to get pin hole size holes which really screwed things up once you started emptying the tank.

Is this something you have to tell the dealer before you have service?

I would say so. Many don't even stock the Fuel Filter Service Kit, and most customers don't have a clue! So you think the dealer's bringing it up? Ask before you bring it in so they can order the kit. Otherwise your bike'll be sitting there a few days, just waiting on that filter to show up. Or worse yet, maybe they'll just SAY they did it! ;)

Its on the service schedule, you don't have to tell them to change the oil.....well maybe you do

Absolutely.  Not only should you make sure they know you want it changed, but insist they give you the one they take out as well.  Unless they have a stash of old filters lying around, it's a decent indicator that they actually changed it.  "Trust, but verify".

i have the kit,  just thinking about trying to do it myself or bring it in.  seems a little complicated. Bob seems to have it down as to how how it goes on.   Sure wish he lived closer.

I decided just to have Jim ( hd-dude) do ours and add the braided lines etc. while he is at it. Otherwise he would probably just complain about the quality of my workmanship if I did the job.  :-[

Yes we are! Except that Jim always readily agrees with Melanie (my other 1/2) when she wants something expensive for her bike like Arnott's, Dakota digital gauges, etc........  :D

I had mine changed out today and they did give me my old one back. Seems good so far and glad I didn't have to do it. Went for ten new screws and a new gasket. Not too bad.

I remember.  If there is still such thing as a "reputable" dealer, the one I went to seems to be the best around here. I know it's done- this time. I was told it's part of their service at certain milage intervals too.  Gave me that warm and fuzzy of course.
