Inner Cam Bearing Replacement on '08
« on: February 13, 2009, 11:19:03 AM »

Do the inner cam bearings need to be replaced on an 2008 motor when going to a higher performance cam?

I know that we used to have to change from INA to Torringtons on the older (non-'06 dyna type) motors, but is it necessary on a newer 2008 Twin Cam?  I believe that Harley increased the diameter of the inner cam bearings on the newer 96" type motors so the load bearing capacity must have increased.

I'm changing to a .500 lift cam with stock springs.  I suppose that if the answer is YES (I need to change to Torrington bearings) that my old inner bearing removal tool will not work with the larger bearings.  More $$$$$.

I think the Torrington (Timken) bearings are a good improvement.
The reason is not the higher performance cams, it's the longevity.

If you change cams, it's the right moment for this exchange.

I would agree that it is a good improvement as the Torrington bearings have retainers.  The cost of the bearing insn't much but I was wondering if it is absolutely necessary as my old inner cam bearing puller is the wrong inner diameter.

Wouldn't it be better to replace them while doing the cams then wishing you did later? :nixweiss:

Some people have stated they used a  rented pilot bearing puller from Autozone to remove the inner bearings but you run the chance of the old bearing coming apart and the needles falling down into the cases.   Best thing as you already know is to get the correct tool and do this job only once.

I remember the issue with the inner cam bearings exploding on the early Twin Cams, but has anyone experienced the issue with the new ('06 Dyna type) motor with the larger diameter inner cam bearings?

I would assume that the motor company addressed this issue on the updated motor design with these larger INA bearings and there is no need to worry.  I really don't want to fix something that isn't broken.

ABSOLUTLY!!!!!!!

Never change a cam without changing the bearings!

Not to the point of should you change the bearings, after looking at the cam bearings in the stock 110 engine, they look like Torrington bearings already in there.
They are a full compliment bearing seated in an inclosure.
