cam selection

Seems like there are some pretty good wrenches on this site so I want to pose a question.
First of all 2002 flhtcui with the standard stage 2 kit from harley,203 cams flat top pistons, no head work done, hooker slipon's. I am interested in torque from this motor I don't ride fast and I travel with my lady sometimes pulling a bushtech trailer. I want to install a gear drive cam and I want either a 21g or 26g from andrews. Any one have any suggestions?

Is this a 95" motor, or a TC-88 ?
That would make a difference in your choice of cams. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

If it is a 95" then the 37G or 50G would be a better choice,IMHO

I'll ask a different question:  Do you like the way the 203s generate low end torque?

If you you do and you don't plan on any other mods than a cam change, then I would look at the Andres 21 or 26. Milder cams, definitely good low end torque. If you wanted not quite as much low end and a little more mid-range then the 37s, but that would be about it. To get the 37s to really come alive, a little head work would be in order.

Just to see what you are looking at, check out the Dyno Runs section on Harley Tech Talk. There are plenty of Stage 2 with 203 and stage 2s with the 26g cams to look at.

If you are as "light handed" as you stated earlier, then if you get too much cam and no headwork, you will be disappointed in the end result and end up doing it over.

If you are running stock heads , I'd recommend the 26G , if they are ported The 37G will give you better pull across the range. Optimal CR for the 37G is 9.8:1 .  here's an example of a nice 95/37G ported build http://www.deweyspegs.com/dyno_pages/dyno1.html

My last ride was a 99 FLHT with 95", mild heads, Tw37s and a Pro Pipe. It had a dip in the torque from 2300 to 2800 but pulled like a mother in the mid range (100 ft/lbs). Awesome cams but they close the intake valve to late for that compression ratio. Solution... simple, either mill 30 thousandths off the heads or do what I did and use the Cometic .030 head gasket. That brought the torque dip down a couple of hundred rpms. With your EFI it will be almost unnoticeable.
