"piston slap"
« on: June 06, 2009, 12:03:51 PM »

Does anyone else have this noise? At about 2800- 3200 rpm just before I pull the clutch. There is not much knock under hard acceleration, but mostly under easy throttle to about that range. I have 3700 miles on it now and first noticed it after the 1000 mile service. I had the dealership install V&H power duals, monster ovals, hi Flo intake, super sert and dyno tune. They told me they had to make a lot of runs to get it right. I asked how many runs, they just said "a lot". It was their first tune with that combo. I guess the biggest problem is I stayed with the syn 3. Anyway I was just wondering if any one else has heard any piston slap or wrist-pin noise on their 09 110. I have the ultra, but would like to hear from all 110s. Dealer test rode and said nothing abnormal.

Mine does it, so does my friends.  (I have 6.5k miles, his has 5k.)  There's lots of talk about it on this board, it is more commonly referred to as "top end noise."  I bought the extended warranty but there are several people here with over 10k miles on their 110's with no problems.

It's supposedly "normal" due to piston configuration....We're supposed to get used to it. :nervous:

Well I'm getting alot more than just "top end noise". Ive always had that, lifter and rocker rattle. this is a definitely a deeper sound than top end.

After my "build" I get a noise (top end) comes from around front of tank (seems to echo off bat wing)

but only after reaching 2600 RPM and continues to 3000 RPM.

sounds like rocker box rattle to me, but I can make it go away by letting throttle down (needs load)

under heavy load I do not notice it, but not sure if that is due to exhaust noise.

the noise is distinctive and consistant. (a little like a loud sewing machine)
but I would not describe it as knocking.

I have 2008 Ultra 110 motor

My 07 has it but after the "fix" it was a little less but still there. These 110's just have issues. :confused5:

I could no longer live with that constant reminder of how the MoCO has failed again to deliver a quality product. I am in the process or replacing the cylinders and pistons with quality pieces from Axtell.

hdfr120, when you do this, is Axtell going to be able to color matcch the powder coating of the lower cases? Thanks

Axtell does not offer color matching. I purchased raw (silver) cylinders from Axtell which I sent to Sumax for powder coating to match the CVO granite cases.

hdfr120, thanks for the reply. How do Sumax cylinders compare to Axtell?

Mine has it too. Ruins the ride. Installed  adjustable push rods, did not help. Been told it is normal. Not acceptable! Red line oil helped a little. Let us know when someone comes up with a fix for this noise.

Turn the stereo up real loud and put on a loud exhaust system, helps alot.

You shoulda heard my old panny, talk about a sloshbox, now my 35 sounds a little better but still noisy..

Sumax only offers powder coating. The cylinders are Axtell.

Currently awaiting cylinders to return from Sumax and heads to arrive from Designs by Dewey. Should be back up and running in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I have Jims 131 and it is very noisy. I am really disappointed, even the performance is not so huge difference to 110 (with other exhaust and intake + SERT). Also cam cover gasket is leaking oil. My 110 was really silent compared to this. Now I have ordered new different kind of tappets, let's see if it helps. I changed the engine because I didn't trust anymore my 110 after it threw oil out from cam position sensor hole and what they did in 8 months was replacing heads and gaskets. Harley is pure scrap...
