Has anyone installed the tw5g cam in a cvo103
« on: November 24, 2005, 01:34:41 AM »

I would like to hear your feed back if you have installed the bob woods tw5g cam. I have been told by a member that our heads will only handle .550 lift. My local dealer claims these heads will handle up to .640 lift. Woods cam tw5g is .575 bob woods claims our heads will handle it with out any special work. Any feed back would be nice.
Thank you

We have discussed this before. The stock SE 103 heads will only handle .550 lift. This is per THE FACTORY not a dealer. The screamin eagle 103 plus heads will handle .650 of lift. So the woods tw5g will not work with your stock heads. That is not to say you can'T pull your heads and send them out to be modified.

I think Short Block Charlie (who is a big fan of the Woods tw5g cam in our motors) will tell you that they can not be used without head work also.  That's what he told me about a year or so, ago.  It's posted somewhere on this site.

It is also recommended from Bobby Woods that you go with roller rockers .
He's a great guy and recommend that cam for me as long as I had the proper support parts , i.e heads/rockers etc.

I called Bob today to ask for a recommendation and he suggested the TW-6HG with me doing some minor head work.  Although he also said I would need compression releases, which I don't want.

The TW-6HG is a TQ monster. You need to do some head work for it to work. You may want to wait till we see what the Zippers packages turn out like. If not I have a set of those cams I will make you a deal on.

Really 2 issues ... 1 our heads wont handle the lift per Harley's engineering they will as Dawg states only handle up to a .550 lift.   The second problem you have is the heads as they are, are not very efficient in velocity.   They are approx 94 cc from the factory while the 103+ heads are 98cc from the factory with a higher lift and bigger intake port.

You will need to get headwork on the heads / rocker boxes (clearanced) if you want to handle a 650 lift.  You will want to install the roller rockers if your over a 600 lift anyhow as a general rule of thumb.

The velocity is another issue most of the guys are welding up the chambers and building up the floors of the heads to get the velocity up in the heads while still trying to keep the CFM in the heads.  The object there being to keep the CFM and add in the velocity while having a good squish.

I may wait on Zippers if they come out with something fairly soon.  I don't mind doing a little work to the heads but I don't really want to be tied to using a compression release.

About 30 to 45 days to get the testing done I would guess.
