Better sound and less buffeting.
« on: October 15, 2009, 10:03:22 PM »

Here is something my buddy and I did to our helmets for better sound and buffeting. First we started with a set of "skullcandy" headphones. (yes skullcandy) And then the surgery began. I cut the back of the speakers off to allow for more room.

Next I spliced the wires from the harley intercom to the speakers.

And the finished product. I added some velcro on mine to bring the headphones closer to my ears. The piece under the speaker had to be motified a little and my wife sew it to fit.

I know how much you guys (and gals) like pics so here you go. Our goal was to never give up, have a better sound than the speakers from harley and reduce the noise from the wind. My buddy just rode to laughlin and stated the buffeting before was about a 3 (on a 1-10 scale) and now more like a 7-8. And the stereo was much better. The headset did come with an amp that takes a AA battery.  The only thing I might miss out on is how nice my bike sounds with the new catless exhaust and TTS tuner. But Bob Segar never sounded so good on the road.

The placement of the speakers.

What holds the speaker (headset) to the helmet?  Velcro only?

Any more feedback since you ahve used these now for a few months?

Thanks

Velcro yes. The sound is definitly better than the HD speakers. As far as the buffeting I would say about  50% better also. Although I am now starting to use earplugs as well. I was starting to have some ringing in my ears without them.

My experience so far has been that buffeting is a problem that must be fixed at the root cause. No helmet, plugs, headset will fix it. Buffeting slaps your helmet regardless of which helmet you use.  I tried the same idea on one of my helmet and I agree with you about sound quality but the buffeting effect was amplified and drove me nuts.  After just a couple hours of riding I had ringing in my ears for a couple days.  Bad, bad, bad...

Good luck.   :coolblue:

It seems that buffeting is not an easy problem to fix.

As for the Buffeting I think that to get something good you have to sacrifice another.  By that I mean it all comes down to your windshield.  To stop the buffetting you need a large tall windshield which will take away from the look of your bike.  It seems you can only have one... Hey marty there maybe 1 other choice, and I really like it. Look at what wts did with his bike. He installed fat baggers 3'' drop kit. I know some guys think its only for short riders, but I called the company and 1 of the guys(64 years old) that ride with the kit is 6'4" and loves it. This also sit us big guys lower in the seat, making that big windshield >:( not have to be so ugly. It alot of $ but what the heck, look how much we spent on our bikes.
