06 SE 103"
« on: December 16, 2005, 09:12:06 AM »

What is the factory 103" engine. I have been through all my manuals and it tells
me nothing as far as what is in the engine. When I go to the SE parts catalog and
look at the upgrades on Heads-PIstons- Throttle body, I dont know what I already
have. Where can I access this information?

Try the regular H-D web site, parts and accessories, EFI kits.

Some information that is not there.  The heads are 94cc and they will accept up to a .550 lift cam.  They are hemi Design vs. Dome/bathtub design.   They have circular ports vs. the HTCC which are D shaped.   The pistons are alloy flat tops not forged.

These heads pretty much SUCK in the form they are in.   They do not flow air well and require quite a bit of work on them if you dont want them to SUCK.

So good heads such as C&C, Edlebrock, Screamin Eagle, Branch, will make a noticable difference ??

Thanks,

Unless you go with the 103+ most of the head guys out there do not have a solution for you.   The 103 hemi shaped heads which only come on our bikes stink.   You will either have to have your stock ones welded up or look towards the 103 plus.   Remember though there are only a few people really willing to and know what they are doing with the Hemi shaped heads we have.   That is why so many of us are waiting so patiently while Zippers finishes their prototypes.

They don't flow well in the stock form, they have huge chambers( very low compression) and a not so good port size, the only thing they have going for them is that they are set up for 550 lift. They can be fixed though and our friends at Zippers are working on a fix right now as we speak!!!!! There are others that can rework your heads. I have seen a few sets done by others. I really don't know how they worked and don't know any flow numbers. Also one important thing. A lot of guys just brag on flow numbers and just because someone has good numbers does not mean the heads really really work! You must also look at good cylinder fill. That is very important when looking at a certain design in heads. The cam will also play a role in this. So what I am trying to say is the greatest heads in the world may not be the greatest in our world!  It is not all about flow numbers.

Hemi heads like the H-D 103 version are inefficient in terms of power output, octane requirement, and emissions.

Since H-D abandoned the hemi in favor of the vastly superior bathtub design when they brought out the TC88, I find it slightly strange that they went backward with the 103 heads.

Jerry, I'm curious about the 'hemi' heads design-wise.  Did Harley start using them in the Shovelhead era?  And is this the same type of design that Dodge Hemi's have?  What would be the good features of that design, if there are any?   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]thanks, spyder

Tunedse2,

With my SE 103" Engine, I sent the heads to SBC (Short Block Charlie) Phoenix. He did his Vortec Porting & Polishing on the heads. Went with S&S 585 Cam, rest of engine stock. At that time Rinehart True Duals.

Bike dynod at Chosas at 105.9 HP and Torque of 117 lb. ft. Now has Freedom Cycle exhaust, have not dynod.

Charlie SBC has done many of the 103" heads with good result.

Jerry actually the CHRYSLER HEMI was abandoned in 1972 because of emissions and yes the shovel head was a hemi head design.

Thanks for the info guys.  Do you think the MOCO used this head design in order to keep the compression low on a high performance motor for the average joe....to eliminate some of the problems inherent as the compression ratio goes up?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]   spyder

Speaking on trying something different, as you know we tried something different on the 05 SEEG I should have a good idea of the outcome by this upcoming weekend.

So I'm a new 06 FLSTFSE2 owner and wanted to get info on my new 103ci, and lo and behold, here you guys are...[smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I'm disappointed that HD put crappy heads & slugs on the motor, but they wouldn't sell many upgrade parts if they didn't.

I called Branch Flowmetrics and inquired about our 103 heads.  As has been mentioned, they don't really do these at Branch.  However, I was told that if I wanted to buy the Zipper's 575 cam-for example- I could send them my heads, and they would smooth out the ports and set the compression for about $400.  I was told that they would put in their bronze valve guides at this time also.  Right now this is the way I'm leaning.  Has anybody else either done this, or talked further to the people at Branch?  This seems like a reasonable way to go.  (They told me at Branch that the bathtub shape would raise the compression too much.) -Steve
