« on: May 09, 2010, 07:24:19 AM »

Bike..2002 FLHT     2 speakers in fairing

I have a Sony CDX-MR50IP    23.2 watts per channel  4 ohms, 4 channels

Does this mean that I have to use 4 ohm speakers or could I use 2 ohm speakers since I am only using 2 channels

You should match the impedance of the speakers to the output impedance of the radio, in other words if you want to use the 4 ohm radio use 4 ohm speakers.

Brian, this requires at least 10 ohms, but I lost count  :D

Brian 2 ohm speakers will burn up the amp section of the radio. those internal amps are not designed to handle that much of a load. however it will be really loud for a short period of time.  ;)

What this is telling you that the rated output is 23 watts/ channel at a 4 ohm load,
most amps cannot handle less than a 4 ohm load.

In fact a lot of amps do not want less than an 8 ohm load.

two 8 ohm speakers in parallel are a 4 ohm load,

So Yes 1 set of speakers at not less than 4 ohms is the answer.
