'09 RG Garage opener.
« on: May 11, 2010, 07:06:09 PM »

I've seen references to programming the garage opener code into the bike.  I've got an '09 SERG and there is nothing in the manual that I could find regarding this.  Does anyone know if the RG is so equipped and how to program it.
Thanks in advance

Do a search on this site for "garage door opener" you should find one that you can make yourself using a spare door opener. It's an easy thing to do if you can solder and if you can't maybe a friend will do it for you.

I took an extra opener, wired an extra rubber covered odometer switch with pigtail to it, then mounted the switch on the left clutch perch and put the opener in the fairing.  I can reach it with my index finger.  This older type of opener actuallt runs on a small 12VDC battery, so you could hard wire it to power in the fairing if desired.

For the RG, I took an extra mini, programmable garage door opener remote and velcroed it to the underside of my left glove box door.  Always there, works perfectly.  You can find them on line for about $10 (and up).   :nixweiss:  I simply use my left hand to open the glove box door and reach underneath to push the button.  Seemed like the simplest way to go.

Just installed the garage door opener in my '09 SERG and thought I'd post the results.  Like many others on this site, I was a little squeamish about cutting and splicing the OEM wiring harness.  I bought a headlight plug from the local auto parts store ($1.99) and spliced the leads from the garage opener and the headlight plug with male spade connectors.  I plugged the male ends into the existing headlight connector and new headlight plug onto the left headlight.  Works like a charm and can be unplugged and moved to a different bike if needed.  Just plug the existing headlight plug back onto the headlight and you're done.  Hardest thing was getting the outer fairing back on but I pulled the headlights out as suggested on previous threads and I'm sure it made it a lot easier because you can see what you're doing.  Just another example of why this site is great.

That's the one I just installed.  I just couldn't bring myself to splice the wiring harness as described in the installation instructions.  Works the same through the Hi/Low beam switch.

You can use the HD branded parts without splicing.  Just pick up a spare headlight plug and make an pigtail with it.  Then it's all easily plugged and unplugged.

Believe it or not they didn't have a HD headlight plug in stock at my local dealer.  I just got one at the auto parts store.  The '09 SERG didn't come with a interconnect fitting for the garage opener like the Electra Glide.  The Harley installation instructions that came with the garage opener called for splicing the harness with butt connectors.  That's what I had a problem  with.

What do you want for $30k, a $.03 plastic connector to make it easy?
