Is the 2011 110" motor as noisey
« on: September 20, 2010, 06:36:47 AM »

I know there have only been minor changes to the 2011 100" motor, but I read somewhere on the forum that it may be a bit quieter. Not saying this makes sense from what the MoCo changed, but has anybody riden both and have an opinion??

So far our 2011 is definitely less noisy than out '07.

My 2011 is also less noisy (piston slap) than my 2009.  But, it could be just the luck of the draw from the parts bin.  I doubt if anyone's taking more time and measuring the piston-cylinder clearance.  As noisy as my '09 was, it never used any oil, which I thought was somewhat of a miracle.

My '10 is noisey, but does not use any oil either.

I doubt if there is any significant changes in the engine end on the 2011 110" motors - newer engines will likely be a little quieter until they wear in.
As far as oil use, my 110" used about 1/2 quart in a 2700 mile trip me and the wife just took.  And it had some tough duty, climbing Mt Washington on a rather warm day (oil temp went to 270 with an in-sump sensor - dash gauge).

Just purchased a 2011 SE Street Glide in Black Diamond.  The 110" motor seems very quiet to me but then that's coming from an '06 SG with 103" and D&D Boarzilla.

It seems to depend on each 110. My 2009 CVO SE Ultra sounded like a it had a ball bearings bouncing around in the heads, especially between 2800 and 4000 rpm. On the other hand, the 110 in my 2008 CVO SE Ultra is quiet at all engine speeds.

That sounds like detonation to me, in that rpm range.
Something a good tuner may be able to address. :)

Just figured I would throw this out there since the is a 2011 SESG waiting at the dealer for me for a good price and I was wondering if the noise rumors I have heard were true......

I would be surprised if the 2011 110's are any quieter than the previous 110's.  May be quieter during the first few 1000 miles or so, but my guess is they too will be as noisy.  Some people may not be able to hear it... some may not care... they say lust love is blind  :nixweiss:  For those that can hear it and know something just ain't right, it is maddening  >:(  I've been riding my beast for three years now (08 SEUC).  What I have figured out is; you gotta put some really loud exhaust on them and keep the stereo cranked up.... it's the only thing I have found that helps the engine rattle ;D

And, this is why my next HD will not have a 110  ;)

I purchased a 2010 CVO Ultra Dark last May, & have had too many problems with it.
The worse problem is the bent crank, which should be replaced some time next week, with only 1800 miles on it.
The bike has been noisy from day one, probably lifter noise.
The bike ran so hot, that the rear cylinder would shut down in 65 degree weather in stop & go driving.
I finally, installed the fullsac X-Pipe with the 2" baffles, Arlen Ness Big Sucka, & TSS Mastertune to alleviate the heat problems.
After I got this work done by an independent shop, the mechanic noticed a noise coming from the primary.  He said that it was probably the primary bearing & have the dealer check it.
The dealer checked it out & found out the crank was bent.
Since this is a common problem, the cranks were on back order.
The dealer said that they would have a crank shipped from the production line to speed up the work.
I have dealt with this dealership since 1969, & they were always helpful & honest.
If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have spent over $40K for a top of the line bike that Harley knows they have problems with & still don't address it.
The quality control of Harley sucks.
I think that it's about time that we have another class action suit on this.
Anyway, I still have my 2006 BMW R1200RT which has been problem free.
I guess that if I have ongoing problems with this engine, I will just sell the bike.
This will be the last Harley that I buy.
It's a shame that Harley can't or won't get their act together.
This reminds me of the old AMF days.
