Good news for us SERK owners.  I checked the SERK parts book and we already have the 29510-05 backplate assembly, so it looks as if we just replace the filter element with the K&N HD-0800 filter we have an awesome AC!

Well today I disassembled my A/C assembly to install the EFI Intake Manifold Cover (27483-07A) and when I flipped over the backplate I seen the following part number stamped into my existing backplate 29478-05, which is not the same as the SERK parts manuals states.  The manual states that the 29510-05 is stock on the bike... WTF???

The dealership is closed for the day and I will pick up the 29510-05 assembly for the Roll your own project tomorrow.

My question is, when I install the new backplate and fresh o-rings will I have just created a "lean" condition for the bike if I use all the stock compenents (filter, etc...) just by changing out the backplate?

I wonder if the backplate on my bike isn't a Screamin' Eagle® Air Cleaner Backplate, but maybe an old on where the part was superceded.  I guess I won't know until I compare them side by side...

I do not plan on upgrading the filter element to the K&N HD-0800 until the Rineharts and SERT have been installed and the bike is ready for the dyno.

Deuce,

Back when the referenced post was made in March of '06, Ness hadn't come out with a backplate to fit the '06 and later throttle bodies.  There was a change on the '06 TB that wouldn't allow the original Ness backplate to seat properly, but Ness came out with a new plate to correct that later in '06.

Time to resurrect this topic again.  ;)

Having saved a bunch in doing the RYO filter for the CUSE2 back in the day, I'm needing to think about a replacement filter for the 09 CUSE4.

So, has anyone done an RYO job for an 09?

Can it be done in the same way, even?

Or is it just as cheap to buy a non-MoCo kit like the Ness Big Sucker Stage 1?

Finally - the nice 27483-07A manifold cover.  P&A book says it fits to '07, but has anyone fitted one to an 09?

Eqcons,

I bought the Roadglide style out of the latest catalog addendum and my reasoning was for look, but also to bring my knee in a bit on the air cleaner side.   I was quite pleased with the results.   K&N is also makinga  4 bolt air cleaner that you can buy for this roll your own.   A local shop here has them on the shelf as well as the 3 bolt for the older style.

Yes, saw that, UnB.  Problem there is, though it looks veree nice, you need to worry about that rain sock.  And here, it rains. A lot.

Ideally, I'd like the round K&N style filter, and the 07 FLHRSE3 Cover, but I don't know if it (the cover) will fit an 09.  Again, to give my leg some more room, as well as looking great.

So, I guess I'm still wondering - is an RYO possible for an 09, or should I just go for a Big Sucker or similar....?

I do not see why it wouldnt work the only change I noticed was the 4 bolt holes in the filter.  From sizing it by hand they seemed to match up with the old 3 hole air filters   That said I don't see why the stock cover wouldn't work.

I'm hoping the stock cover will, as that's the cheapest route!  :D

I have followed all the responses and have one question.  I have an 06 SE Ultra.  What air filter allows me to continue to use my stock cover while enhancing the breathing capabilities?  I had hoped to use an Arlen Ness Stage 1 but read that this won't work.  Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The ordinary SE one, or even better, the RYO one described in this thread will work just fine!  (I'm not familiar with teh Arlen Ness ones, so I've no idea there....)

I phoned Motorcycle Superstore out of Oregon and he told me that Arlen Ness didn't show anything for my model but if he had a part # he could cross reference it. I just put a Commander II, Vance and Hines headers and Rinehart mufflers on because the stock HD "y" pipe broke and now I want to get rid of that junk HD paper filter. I went to the HD shop in Portland ME and they didn't have all the Roll Your Own Parts Listed on the thread so I thought I would try the Arlen Ness route.
