Handlebar question - preference of majority?
« on: April 15, 2006, 11:43:16 AM »

I am going to sell my Sportster and have been contemplating whether to change out the handlebars beforehand.  Right now, it has the dirt track straight bars.  They work for me because I have long arms, but they do cause tired shoulders and back after longer rides (similar to what Twolane said on his thread).  The straight bars also create more of a dirt-bike look and less of a traditional HD appearance in my opinion.  I have two buckhorn bars - the 883 buckhorn (more curve) and the 1200 buckhorn - that I can put on before listing it.  Just curious to see if you guys thought it would sell quicker with the buckhorns and/or if they are preferred.

IMHO - Might as well throw all three bars in on the deal, don't get caught up in warehousing gillions of past parts and think you will use them in the future.

I agree on both of these, I have boxes of stock stuff from old bikes, that really is of no value, and if they want the buckhorns, they can do them or have them done after they buy it.

But will the straight bars make it more difficult to sell?  The first thing guys say is "Man, these bars are hard to reach."  If it doesn't FEEL right, will it sell?  They can take all three...won't need them.  I'm afraid it doesn't look traditional enough!!  Pic attached.

Buckhorns  ughhhhhhh  Bike looks good with the drag bars V, but chances ae no matter what you had on it the new owner would change it. My bike had 15" Chubby's on it when I bought it. I changed to 12" God made us all different. That's why there's a gazillion different handlebars on the market.

Complete the package for the prospective buyer.  Have both a labor estimate from some local shop to show how easy it is to change those bars (if the buyer is the untooled variety) and throw in a $25 Clymer's service manual so they'll think they can do it themselves if they're of the mind they want to play.  If they really know what they're doing they'll already understand that swapping bars on the little Sporty just isn't a big deal so they'll not be worried about it anyway (and they'll be happy as hell to get the spare bars).

WORKS FOR ME!!!   Where is Don located at??????  Actually, not a bad idea to work out a deal with the local bike shop.  Lord knows if they get roped into the local scene, they'll become addicted like the rest of us and "just keep buying, buying, buying!"

When the digital pics get back, Fired00d and others, I'll send you copies from the owner in a burnout competition on his Pumpkin against a city motorcycle cop!
