Okay, made the appointment today to have the SE hydraulic cam chain tensioner upgrade kit installed at my Indy shop. They suggested that I replace the lifters and put in adjustable push rods while they had this area open. I told them okay, but now I am second guessing them as to why? Do I really need to replace the lifters at 22m miles, and the push rods? Thoughts on this anyone.....

I can't figure that one out other than dealers will suggest anything to separate you from your $$$$$!

Replacing the lifters with 22k on them is not a bad move at all. The adjustable pushrods are being installed as a time saver. They are not required but if you reuse your stock pushrods then the tank an the rocker assemblies have to be removed to access the cams and tentioners.

Are the adjustable push rods reliable?

I have only had the bike one full riding season, 17m miles last year alone. Of course I had over 100m on my 03 Electra Glide Classic, and it was still running strong when I sold it, and never had to replace anything other than the normal PM stuff.

Have them on my bike. :2vrolijk_21: Saves time and money when changing cams/lifters.

Firedood, had any issues, I have read therads where some had them installed and they backed off, caused some issues. I know anything can happen, but I don't want to take a step backwards with realiability. So far I have only had a minor wiring issue broken wire.

Yes...if installed by a competent mechanic.

And your Indy is saving you money by installing them.    :2vrolijk_21:    The labor expense saved by not re-using your stock pushrods will more than pay for the adjustable pushrods.

Yellow 103, I don't understand why your mechanic (other than for the money) would advise you to change out your lifters at 22K.If they have not been acting up I would leave them alone. On my 09 SEUC I have had two occassions where after I started my bike and ran it for about 10 minutes it seemed like one of the lifters lost pressure and sounded like a chevy small block with bent pushrod. I started to freak then it went away just as fast, both times. I was pretty far from home. Once in Nevada and once in Tuscon. It has not done that since. If you are not having any problems  don't let the dealer talk you into something you don't need, (which will probably cost about  $400.00 extra for the parts) if your bike is running fine. Also, most of the people I know who went form stock pushrods to adjustable pushrods ended up with a more noisy valve train including myself on my 95 EVO. Just my 2 cents.CAHDBIKER

Change your lifters! I would never put lifters back in with 22K miles. Only my feelings.

Let's see,

hd-dude, sadunbar and hdbrad say it's wise to change the lifters.
Try this, go back, read their post and check the credibility of these three members.

I think the majority of us have adjustable pushrods just because most of us have changed cams.  Like somebody above said......if they're installed correctly, they're not an issue and I've now got over 25k miles in 18 months.

As for the pushrods, as noted by others that is strictly a time saving option.  Considering the average price for a set of adjustable pushrods, versus $80 to $100 per hour labor charges, if you aren't having the rocker covers removed for any other reasons then the adjustables will save you a little on the total bill.  Reliability wise, as was also noted by others, that depends mostly on the person installing them.  One piece rods are inherently more reliable, and they are also lighter.  Adjustables, if installed correctly, can be just as reliable and they offer the ability for fine tuning.

As for the lifters, it's not the hydraulic portion of the lifter you need to worry about.  The part of a Harley lifter that usually fails is the roller, and quite often the first time most riders know they have a problem is when the roller bearing fails and trashes several other parts.  A set costs a little over $100, I consider it cheap insurance.
