Rev perf EMS for 2011s
« on: June 13, 2011, 02:37:01 PM »

Just got off the phone with the factory. For those of you, like me, that have been waiting for this product for your 2011 model, they are three weeks out. They've been three weeks out since February. I've called five times since and the answer is always 3 weeks out. Maybe the 6th call/answer is the charm.

I talked to Andrew while his crew was installing the EMS on my 07 Ultra.  That whole crew rocks and are a great bunch of guys to talk to and hang with.

I asked him about the 2011.  He explained that HD has done a good job of locking down the access to the layer of the ECM they need to access to do the voodoo that they do.  He is saying they are close but it takes time and they have a group of engineers working on the issue;

On a side note, the wait will be worth it.  I have had a TMax and was happy with it but it was limited and like other TMax users was always messing with it trying to make the mouse trap even better.  I have the SERT on the Ultra and had just recently put a 2 into 1 on it.  It ran a a lot better but really needed to be back on the Dyno for a retune.  I have more work I want to do on the motor later when the EW expires and just could not see the cost of a Dyno everytime I changed something.  So I put the EMS on.

The EMS is the bomb I have 900 mile on it since the install and everything you read about it is true.  Better performance, MPG is up around 3-4  Starts better (especially hot startting) cruises better and better throttle response.

If I had a 2011 and know what I know now having installed one on my present bike. I would wait a year vs spend my money on something else.  I just do not see anything else on the market that compares.

There is an alternative option for the 2011 guys.  Albeit an option not without added expense.  If you can score an earlier ECM that can be used.

Apparently the changes done to ECMs beginning with 2011 are also being done to replacement ECMs as well.  This means that the target ECMs are -08 and -08A revisions.  Travis (Ghost Rider) here locally did that with his and the install went without a hitch.

There might even be some at least short term benefit to going this way.  Whenever they get the 2011 software cracked they'll be much earlier in their learning curve then they already are on the software used in the 08 ECM.  So one could conceivably be using a more mature product with the older ECM.

I also went with the earlier ECM and my '11 ECM is sitting in a box in the garage.

will an 08 - a work as well or does it have to be an 08?

Did someone say that new 08 replacements from the factory are being offered with the 2011 revisions added making them unusable for this purpose?

Thanks

Was told by the boys at Revolution Performance that you want an -08 or an -08A ECM.  -08B and newer revisions were getting the newer software.

What is the -08A full part number?

For which model bike?

You can look them up in your parts manual.  Not all the same from model to model though.  Also some of what's there can be rewritten as part of what RevPerf does to the ECM.  So best advice it to ask them what modules or applications that can interchange to your bike.

I'm really leaning towards going with the Precision system. I'm planning on just getting a new ECU for my 2011 SESG2 (from a 2010); here is what I got from an online fische search for part numbers by model (all are CVO specific, and all are from MY2010). I would recommend you verify accuracy before ordering:

CVO Streetglide (FLHXSE) - 34246-08A - (verified accurate via Parts Manual)
CVO Ultra (FLHTCUSE5) - 34246-08A
CVO Softail (FLSTSE) - 32534-05C
CVO Fat Bob (FXDSE2) - 32534-05C

Seems as though the ECU is the same part number for Touring models and non-Touring models. I have verified that the part number listed above for the FLHXSE (CVO Streetglide) is accurate and correct from my parts manual - all others listed may not be. Looks to be about $275 or so for a new 2010 (-08A) ECU with 20% off. I'm ok with getting a new replacement to be programmed up by RevPerf - then save the OEM 2011 in case I ever want to go back to stock.

Hope this helps ...

That's what I did with my 2011.....and the fact that they can't program the '11 ECM yet helped in the decision. I got the ECM direct from Andrew over at Rev Perf and if I remember correctly, it was cheaper than going to a dealer--even with the 20% off. I would call them and check before ordering it from HD.

Those are the part numbers for blank modules.  Never flashed for a specific model.  What I don't remember is whether you'd then have to pay the dealership to give the module a first flash before it went to Revolution Performance or whether working with the empty module is something they could do.  The question of what status an ECM they can handle should be asked of them.

Good point. Just spoke with Andrew and according to him, sending in the new (blank) ECU is fine.
No need to have HD flash it before delivery.

Just tried to order the ECU from a 2010 FLHXSE (34246-08A) and the -08A suffix is no longer available. New part number is 34246-08B (even for the 2010s). So unless you can find a dealer that has a -08A in stock (I did), they are no longer being produced.

Hopefully RevPerf will crack the -08B/2011 ECUs soon.

Anyway ... just thought I would provide an update.

Unfortunately that had come up before.  The B revision hit the streets a few months back.  Mother Harley apparently doesn't care for its customers having options outside the MoCo coven so everything they can lock down they'll try to.

2011 models have been available 11 months now.
With 12's coming next month RevPerf is getting behind.
Wonder if the EMS for the 2012's  will be out in two weeks like they told me in March?
Or maybe they should revise their ad to show availability for just the 2010 and earlier models?
Probably will in two weeks.

 ;)

And still none of these work on the 2011 softail. You can't even go backwards with the ECU for the softail (according to Rev Perf on the phone) The SEPST only has one base map for the softail which is horrible.

Isn't the Softail the model they are testing the CAN wiring on this year and that is the reason why??

Yes.  Softail is an entirely different animal from all other models now.  It'll be awhile before the aftermarket catches up to the CAN bus even though Harley will implement it more and more.

eBay has been an occasional source.  Just did a search and found four.  Some even reasonably priced.  Used this as a search string:

Harley (ECM, ECU, control module) (08, 08A) -(zippers, thundermax, blundermax)

Why would you pay hundreds of dollars for an 08A when, according to Rev Perf, they will be ready for the 2011 bikes about the time you receive yours?

No offense to Rev Perf, but they have been saying they will be able to program the 2011 ECM's "in 3 weeks" for close to 6 months. They are having some problems with them. Once again, I am NOT saying this to speak badly of  them--I have the EMS on my bike since April and it runs great--but I am also using the 08A ECM. I'm sure once they actually crack the '11 ECM, it will run as well as the older versions.

I am a stickler for being able to return to stock setup, so I would want to save my stock ECM even if they weren't having issues with the 2011 ECU.

I would have ordered a second ECU either way.
