Other gear drive cam choices
« on: May 31, 2006, 05:53:55 PM »

I haven't made very many posts to this site.  I really have learned a few things, but I'm disappointed that when it comes to cam choices, I hear only two things.  Zippers or Freedom.
Because I've been running S&S gear drive cams in one of my other HDs, I am fully aware of the advantages of gear drive.  I am also aware there are other choices besides Zippers and Freedom.  I want to swap out my cams for my new SE Ultra at some point, but I am waiting to be convinced which is best.  Has anybody tried any "bolt in" gear drive cams OTHER than Zippers or Freedom?
Maybe a poll should be taken of what people are using and why.  I have spent way too much money on things advertised as being the new "hot deal" only to find out I wasted my time and money.   [smiley=nervous.gif]  I don't mean to offend anyone, -I'm just thinking outside the zipper! Mine is the S&S .625 lift...
I have 30,000 miles on them, with zero problems.

If you read thru the Dyno Thread in the SEEG forum you'll find some information which may help you decide.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

You can also look at head-quarters cams.  They offer lots of ggod cams and a similar 575 lift cam.  I have not used these guys but have heard there stuff works real well.  The reason most of us have used Zippers and Freedom is they have spent time researching the CVO engine and what cam and grinds work best for that motor.  That says allot since most of these companies are not testing cams for our engine.  You can read all the hype you want from one hundred different companies, but in this day and age, dyno sheets do the talking.  Take the advice above and read the threads with dyno runs, it's REAL information...

Don't most of these performance parts distributors have Competition Cams cut their cams to spec.?  I know I read that somewhere.  Where was it I read that, Twolane?  The only cams I have heard negative feedback on, is Andrews.  Later--HUBBARD

I'm running Andrews 26Gs. Is there a problem I should know about?

Thanks

I put a set of S&S570's in my 03 SERK and have been perfectly happy with them.  Runs very well and quiet as a mouse.  I didn't dyno it as I'm not interested in that, just wanted a decent running gear drive and couldn't wait on the Zipper's to come out.

There are a lot of gear driven cams out there to choose from. If you are keeping your motor stock with the exception of the cams you would most likely look at Freedom and Zippers. These cams were designed for the very low compression (about 8.7 to 1) in our CVO motors. These cams were also designed to increase cylinder pressures and hence the increase in TQ and HP.

If you want to think outside the ZIPPER go ahead and look at the other cam manufactures. Head Quarters, Andrews, Comp, Woods, and S&S. All you really need to do is increase your compression and make your choice for the type of driving you will be doing the most of.

Be Safe

I forgot to mention that I also put in a cometic .030 head gasket which raised my compression to around 9.4 and the CCP to about 175#.

Steve G,

The problem isnt necessarily the cam choices its the cam choices with the heads we have and the numbers your looking to obtain.

Choices are not limited by anything other than your style and what you wish out of the bike.

Hence,

Andrews 26g  one up riding
Andrews 37g  two up riding
Andrews 55g  more aggressive / cometic .030

Woods
6h
400 noisy great torque hard on valve train

S&S
510
570 prolly best choice with no headwork
625 head work

Freedom
Zippers
557
575
647 head work / top end
657 head work / torque / little less top end than 647 less overlap

T-Man custom grinds don't know if he has a bolt in for 103
Custom cam from Cycle Rama (Wes)

and a meriad of other companies, but most don't have a straight bolt in they have combinations that go with THEIR head work.   The difference though being what they said above what do you want out of it.   The heads plain stink on our bikes there for they do not flow at high velocity hence you wont get great numbers.  I have spent the money on testing cams with these motors and not just Zippers, so my retorical question to you is what are you after when you change out your cams.   Happy to lend what I learned, just need more info's.

OTIS can elaborate on that subject for you.  He's changed Cams so many times, he's on his third Cam Cover! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]Later--HUBBARD
