Tire valve stem FRUSTRATION
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:45:53 AM »

ok here is a topic that really pisses me off. The motor company tells us to check tire pressure often and it is the most annoying thing i have found. It is a pain in the asset. You can't get a tire pressure cage on it properly and then try and get air into it. Has the motor company ever tried to do this.

What do you guys do........ :-X :-X

Really??  Position the rim to an easily accessed location and use a quality pressure gage.  Maybe you have a POS gage?   :nixweiss:

Hey bubtrauma,  :drink:

The only problem I have with checking air is aligning the valve stems (Front & Back) where I can get to them. I use the Harley air gauge and have no problems getting it on or off or getting it to read air. Don't know if the wheels on my Nana are make a difference or if it's the air gauge your using? No problems here. :nixweiss:

Look closer at the JEGS products.  They have straight, 45, 90....   But they're not cheap... :2vrolijk_21:

The type offered by the MOCO should work fine...

No buddy I sure don't! I guess I'm the only one here that can use an air gauge with a 45 degree tip on it to get a reading with no problem! I am sorry to hear you have problems. I believe sadunbar found your solution....unless you would rather install those 90 degree valve stems! Have a great day!!! ;D :2vrolijk_21:

No, he (JR) has the same kind I have, angled to the right side.  The kind you have are a PITA, as you mentioned originally, because they sprout from the centerline of the rim and point straight at the hub.  That might work just fine if the wheel was about 25-30" in diameter so you could get easy access to the valve, but it wasn't a very good idea on a cramped motorcycle wheel with brake rotors and sprockets eating up what access there is.  Another example of fine engineering.

I know I've seen it somewhere, but can't find it at the moment.  There is a product on the market that has a gauge with a short flexible hose that you screw onto the fitting.  You then add or release air through the gauge unit.  If I can find the info I'll post it later.

Jerry

btw, the first time you have your tires replaced you might want to look at changing those valves to an angled version.

Griot's Garage has an inflation/deflation tool that's all done with on hand at a gauge/control unit that is remote from the valve stem.  Hose from the gauge unit to the valve stem clamps on the valve stem.

I think the unit they've got now has a digital display.  Mine is their old analog gauge.  It's the most convenient air chuck I've got.  Straight end but still no great hassle to get it on a bike bire.

Saw this one at Groit's Garage ($60) although this is just the gauge no inflation device like Don spoke about. I like the quick release on valve stem and easy digital readout in tenths of an pound... :o

I saw this one in the HD 2012 Accessory Catalog and for around $32-$40 (depending if you can get a 20% dealer) and am getting it for my nana! Thought it would be good to keep on the bike! :2vrolijk_21:

Got a P/N? That looks similar to the one I got from Sears (Craftsman 12V Portable Inflator).

A company called GORILLA makes a valve stem with a 45 degree bend in it, I had one installed on my rear wheel for the same reasons you are complaining about. The part number is VS403C it is located in the wheel accessories on Gorilla Automotive Products. It is a chrome solid valve stem and if you have the installer point it just a little forward it will not contact your caliper. I have had one on my rear tire since I bought the bike new in 2008 and have had no problems with it. Good Luck If anyone would like a picture posted I will do so later if requested

Thank you JR for posting that pic, if I remember correctly they come in a package of four and were only around 20 bucks. The nice thing about them is you don't have to stick your hand up around a hot rotor if you have been riding. The techs at my dealer love them

I have one of these; it's EZ to attach and lets you fill or deflate easily.  Costs about $18 to $20 + shipping on this Google search:

I just wish some one would come up with a gadget that would let you know when that rear valve stem was at the bottom. Too me that is the most pain in the backside. I know about the mirror trick in the garage. But that doesn't help much when your out riding. Any suggestions on this??????

Yup.  That's another good reason for installing a center stand.  Pop the bike on the stand and use your hand to rotate the tire to whatever position you want.
