Ridge riding in the snow
« on: January 05, 2012, 01:17:41 PM »

I've been dirt riding most of my life. Ridden in the snow and on ridge crests but never at the same time.
Taken In Colorado with studded knobbies. One slip and it's all down hill....way down hill

I must be getting ole but I wouldn't do that when there wasn't snow. I believe there was a little "seat sucking" wiggle at the end just before the rider stopped. :nervous:

I thought it odd that the rider's head never moved during the ride.  Also the front tire is not "rolling" in many of the shots.  Wonder if this is touched up??

Whoa...something I'd never do, but respect anyone who can and I rode dirt for years.  His head seems awfully still with all the motion going on underneath.  Was he intentionally keeping still from the waist up?  I'd think there would be some bouncing at least a little.

You got me wondering so I checked out more of his videos and he's pretty darn good. Also checked out some GoPro Hero promo videos and this one is a MX video (different guy) and the results look to be the same.

Looked at both and agree it looks a little strange. In the second one the head on the shadow moves but the helmet doesn't.

Wow!

I would guess if you were "GoPro" and wanted to brag-showoff your gear, you will pick someone whose skills can really make your product shine.
In the 2nd video the rider looks to be sponsored, has GoPro on both sides of he front fender.

Exactly, that's why I posted that video to show how good riders don't move their head much and just how stable the GoPro Hero shoots video.
In the first video you can see existing tire marks in the dirt portions where others have previously ridden. But you never know with todays editing capabilities.

the head does not move because the camera is mounted to the helmet. so the helmet is always stationary in the scene. what you will also notice is that the center of the camera is always pointed exactly where the rider wants to go - when i was young i was taught to always always point my head exactly where i wanted to go - if you look at a pot hole thats where you are going - you have to look beside the pothole to miss it.

so ya - these look like they are real

every seen a helmet cam of a guy doing the cop bike trials - they drag both sides all the way around corners, its amazing.

When I was racing enduro's people would go into the woods and paint bright colors on
all the big rocks knowing if you focused on them you were going to hit them.

Not only do you have to be a skilled rider but you have to stay focused on the trail and
be looking as far down the trail as you can see to have time to prepare for what is coming
up on you. That's how the good riders go fast.

Last time I checked, your head is connected to your body and any helmet you wear fits on your head and if you have a camera attached to the helmet fit over your head the camera will move with you head.. I don't buy the idea the camera is attached to the helmet, maybe a bracket attached to the bike but defiantley not his helmet.  I'm on the side that somthing is 'fishy' with this video.  :confused5:

I would think that the snow would fly out to the sides of the tires and if you line up the edge of the helmet with the top of the mountains in the far horizon there should be a lot of movement.

Looks similar to how Donald Trump's hair moves and reminds me of Superman flying in the 1980s movies.

Fake or not, on a big screen it is still cool.

Similar on bicycles

Wheels are rolling and head doesn't seem as steady. This looks more realistic.

The bicycle video is 'no fake' ... Kind of amazing how the camera moves with the head,  :huepfenjump3:   Also i think this bicycle trail is a little more challenging then the motorcycle ridge trail video..  A couple times the bicycle guy's front wheel was within inces of the edge..   :'(

Chris
My brother in law said the same thing about his helmet, the reason it looks like his head never moves it because the camera is mounted to the helmet and moves with the helmet making it look like is stationary. Like this video from the GoPro web site, since the camera is mounted to the helmet it looks like his head isn't moving but everything else is. As for the front tire I was it moving. I think the guy is just crazy!

They look real to me, in the second one you can see the camera mounted to the helmet in the shadow's, rider is standing on the pegs in both so yea, they look real.

Neat video. The  helmet is an insert. If you look closely when you see the riders arms, proportionately the helmet isn't where the head should be. Still don't know how they did it. Great riding though.

It's a real video, when I ride dirt bikes my head doesn't move as much as my hands. If it did I'd only get about a mile before my head came off!  :nixweiss: The camera and helmet look stationary because they are attached to eachother. The head and camera are moving, but in unison, so the illusion of not moving.
