Cam Chain Tentioner ... How Long?
« on: July 15, 2006, 01:49:13 PM »

Im sure this topic has been discussed before on this forum however I am kind of new so would like to pose this question .... the problem with the cam chain tentioner is it an inharent one that sooner or later is going to happen in all V Twins or was the problem just on certian years and models .... also if its something thats going to happen to all then when would one expect it to start and what are the symptoms ... anyway to prevent this ?

Bama, the cam tensioner is covered in great length in several threads.  Try the search tool and you'll find reading to pass the hours with.  Quick summary is that many worry about it, lots have been bad or even failed very young (less than 20k) but a few have run a long time.  In my own case they came out at about 16k if I remember right.  They would not have survived to 20k at the rate of wear seen when they came out.  Quite ugly actually.  I went gear drive to never have to worry about this particular problem again.

Bama,
I had mine replaced (went to gear drives) at approximately 13K, at that time they were showing normal wear. I'm not an overly aggressive rider, but I do on occasion like to open the throttle and bang the gears. Because of the problems (whether it be many or one) that I'd read about them, and I had wanted to upgrade my cams I decided to go gear drive w/cam upgrade. Now that I do have gear drive I don't have to worry about this inherent problem w/cam chain tensioners. If for any reason you are concerned about them, and if you were thinking about upgrading cams then going gear drive at that time would be well worth it. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Ballpark I would say somewhere around $1,000 - $1,500. This should get you the cams, gear drive, bearings, install and tune. When I had mines done I added some more upgrades....

Feuling Oil Pump
Feuling Lifters
Zippers Adjustable Push Rods
Zippers TC Oil Bypass Shim
Inner/Outer Cam Bearings
3 hours +/- on the Dyno

So my total package was a little more then the above figure. If you haven't already check out this thread - REDSHIFT 575 CAMS & OTHER PRETTY PARTS it will show you all the parts. If you do decide to go this way then Zippers does offer site members a discount on there parts, and I believe it's Wally's Cycles that was found to have the best prices on the Feuling Oil Pump & Lifters.

The inner and outer bearing set are cheap, but even if they cost a bit more they should be up there in the should do part of the job.
