But maybe not the correct tools for this job and in that case I guess I will have to go buy the proper tools. Then I'll have them for the next time I need them

Spoken like a true mechanic,  as for the mouse milk better to buy it I can't get my fingers around their little nipples,  thought I would throw that in there to make you smile.

One thing I have noticed once I seem to buy special tools and fix a bike for me or one of my friends.  Word of mouth gets out.  If you like what you are doing take your time make sure you do it right the first time.  Which I am sure you do because your a diesel mechanic.  You can make a little side money doing it.   When I have time I pick and choose which jobs I want to do now.

That did make me grin bout the mouse milk. Never heard that one but can guarantee it will be used later on! :) Also I never removed a engine while hugging it...til last night. And yes before I left her last night...I pulled the covers up on the lil girl :)

Hey all, finally got engine competely torn apart...other than removing bushings, bearings and the such. I thought it would be more complicated but very simple. It hasn't been long at all since someone has redone this engine, before I starting doing diesel mechanic I worked in a machine shop for over 15 years. There is no wear marks on any surfaces what so ever other than the messed up crankshaft end, even the cylinders didn't have any wear marks. least by my fingers...I used to be able to feel .005 difference in a surface with my fingers. But when I pulled out the flywheels I did see that the bottom of the rods was blue, is there anything special that can be done to prevent that...maybe hi output oil pump or stronger spring in relief? Would you suggest welding and plugging the wheels while I'm having it redone.

I would send the crank in the case with the weight of the pistons to either Darkhorse or Revolution Performance for a;
repair of crank end
true
ballance
weld
case bearing machined and installed
have them reinstall crank in case....unless you just have to do it yourself....

Blue on the rod bottoms is normal. They are induction heat treated.
