Dyno shows horrible stats after 255 cam swap in 96
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:20:18 PM »

I need someone smarter than me to find 20+ that's hiding in my 08 96cu road glide. I have a D&D 2 into 1 fat cat, aftermarket breather, and a v&h fuel pak. Had great butt dyno power. Last week I installed 255cvo cams with s&s quickie push rods. Took it to Harley today to map the ECM and run a baseline dyno. They talked me into a SE TUNER and removing the v&h fuel pak. All fine n dandy but when they run the dyno I saw the numbers and almost puked in my mouth a lil bit:( hp peaked at 60@4566rpm and torque peaked at 89.5@2688rpms. Where the hell is my power at???

Prolly wet sumping from a screwed up o-ring on the back of the oil pump.  :o
You can also disconnect the compression releases, do a compression test, and check to see if your compression is low, high, or uneven. If any of those, you have the cams out of phase.  ::)

I'm sure the o-ring is good. Took extra care when replacing... My cams don't have compression releases. The thing that troubles me is that it runs like a Swiss watch. If the cams are out of phase, wouldn't it run chitty?

Not necessarily.

The cams themselves are in sync. Now you have me questioning the cam gears. Are the timing marks visible through the inspection hole or do I need to remove the side pan again?

You have to remove the cam cover to see the marks.
The easy way to check, is to check compression in both cylinders.
Either one will be a lot higher than the other. OR
Compression will be very low in both. OR
Compression will be very high in both.

What should compression be in terms of psi?

Ok at over that or under that on one cylinder would mean out of time? And as long as we are talking 255s... Is there a difference in cvo and se? Mine are stamped cvo... Thanks for bearing with me and the good feedback btw:)

SE and CVO in this situation are one and the same.
UNEVEN = cams are 1 advanced and 1 retarded. Cam to cam out of time.
TOO HIGH= rear cam gear out of time with the pinion gear.
TOO LOW = rear cam gear out of time with the pinion gear.
It's proper, when installing the primary cam chain tensioner (front of cam plate), to be sure that the slack in the cam chain is on the side the tensioner pushes against when the marks are lined up.  ::)

From the shape of the curve, and the inability for it to make any more past 4500..........dollars to donuts you are sumping.....like trying to pedal a bicycle down the beach in 10" of water......and we all know how far we'd go.

I'm gonna tear it down again tomorrow after hearing that. The tech mentioned that when we dyno'd it today but he thought it was unlikely since there was no lag at take off. Start from scratch I guess. I've been in it once I guess the second time should be a piece of cake. Thanks and I'll let you know what I find

Some basic checks already mentioned and checking for residual sump oil in the crankcase would prevent a tear down maybe or at least tell the story what is wrong

So I tore it down n this pic shows what I found: needless to say, I screwed up. Turned the crank gear one cog, put it back together and ran it. Sounds as good as it did before. It's 15degrees in Minnesota so I won't know how it does in the but dial till it warms up. Not gonna put it on the dyno for a while as the nearest one is 60 miles away but I'm sure the numbers have improved....
