Welded Crank vs S&S ??
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:43:46 PM »

This goes along with the "Welded Cranks" thread.

Several of the builders on this forum have replied that they have seen much more rod bearing failures than shifting cranks, also my Dealer has shown me much more rod bearing failures than shifted cranks. The front rod bearings in the '09 SERG were getting ready to go at 9.5k when it was discovered during a teardown to install the SE Stage III Pro Kit (the front rod was very stiff on the bearings ~ no 'flop') The '09 has never been abused or ridden very hard for that matter ~ just like to stretch its legs every now and then.

My question;
Is it better (longevity in a touring motor ~ I like the characteristics of the SE Stage III Kit) to send the Harley or SE crank to Darkhorse or Silvermoon to weld / plug / install Carillo rods OR buy an S&S crank and save $2k ???

I went with an S&S when I built the Night Train.  Going strong for 4 years with gear drive and no issues.

 When my crank was balanced and welded, the builder took it completely apart and changed every bearing, wrist pin, checked the rods, I think they even changed the brass bushings. So, it's a bran new crank with better and stronger parts that make it up. Cost me $1000 Canadian. That would be about $50.00 US LOL.

Half the cost to have your current crank reworked.  Just sayin.  It would then be plugged welded true balanced to your parts. Not that the S&S is not a great item. If you decide to go S&S I may be up for buying your old flywheel set.

If an H-beam/full wrist pin supported rod is introduced into the crank build with rollers/cages balancing/plugging/welding, etc. they are about 3/4 or more of the cost of an S&S assembly.
