103" vs 110"
« on: September 06, 2014, 09:48:17 PM »

I've been riding a 103" for the past 4 years and will now be moving to a 110" (2015 CVO Road Glide).  What can I expect as far as reliability?  I've logged quite a few long trips and 700-800 mi days and never had any problems with the 103".  Will the 110" be a durable?

It will be unbearably hot in stock form. You will need new head pipe, mufflers, high flow air filter, tuner module and a proper dynotune to make it rideable.

Lots of other issues noted on the forums here. Read through and start planning for new lifters and a cam while you're in there.

After reading through some threads here, I pretty much got my answer.  Very disappointing reads.  At this point I might just back out of the CVO order and build my own with a 103".

That idea has crossed my mind also. But a CVO is always a CVO and no matter what you do to your 103" it will never be a CVO.....will the engine be more reliable (if built properly) and last longer than a stock 110"--probably. There are plenty of people that get many trouble free miles from a 110 but you never hear about that since nobody come on and posts "Another trouble free ride today".....but then there are many others that have had problems and those you will hear about. It's a crap shoot.

The stock CVO air cleaner is already high flow, so you can leave that. You will need to change the head pipe (or gut the cat), mufflers (or at least the baffles) and get a proper tune to make it run better and cooler.

Good luck with which ever way you choose to go!

If you go into it thinking you won't have to spend anything extra since you're already spending an extra ten grand because it's a CVO, you will quickly find that to be a pipe dream.  If you truly want a CVO for all the other stuff besides the engine (wheels, paint, standard accessories, etc.), buying the CVO versus trying to duplicate it using a standard model and the accessory catalog might make financial sense.  But you will still need to pay the "Harley Tax", which includes a new exhaust system and a proper tune.  Then you may or may not experience all the issues previous 110 owners have had since 2007; as mentioned by mjb765, it's a crap shoot.  Harley did finally address the poor inner cam bearings and lifters for the 2013 model year, and at least so far we aren't seeing the same failure rate for those items that we were seeing before.  Even Harley can eventually (after ignoring problems for many years) stop cheapening everything for a few moments to address the issues that are getting to them in warranty costs.

I have a 2009 Flhtcuse, with 56k, if anything ever goes bad wrong I'm going to stick a 103" in it as I think it is the best motor HD has ever made. Had thought about a S&S 124, but I'm not a HP freek and I think that will hurt the value (if there is any)  :soapbox:

You mean you would take out the 110 and put in a 103? In a CVO Ultra? I would think that would be especially hard to sell, ever.

Like any of the Harley problems it's hit & miss. Get a good tune, an extended warranty, put in a set of of S&S Premium lifters and enjoy.

I'll second that about the ESP (extended service plan). They've approved my new cases which have worn out lifter bores in 69,000 miles. That's about all they are good for in the 110.

I have spoken to my Dyno expert(Robs, Gardner,ma) and he highly recommended R and R out of Manchester,NH. Along with the 106 kit ,Heads will be ported  and upgraded with new guides, springs and seals and CCd along with my Andrews 57 cams. He claimed he has similar builds with 110Hp and torq and over 100 ft lbs of torque at 2500 rpm. Sounds too good?

Will the 110" be as durable?

Yes it will...if you make it into a paperweight and put in the S&S 124".   ;)

I have 40,000 on my 2009 Screaming Eagle Rd. glide started out race tuner thunder header. 34,000 decided to pull apart and check lifters after all the talk on here lifters look good I did install S&S premium lifters TC24 cam then decided to pull the heads had torque Inc. check them out John replaced valve springs and exhaust valves also cleaned up intake and ports with 30,000 head gasket 10.5 to 1 retune 110hp 120 tq it is smooth everywhere quiet and cool but it never was noisy, now I have had 9 Harleys between me and my wife in the last 20 years all of them approximately 50 to 75,000 miles at trade-in time, only one I had problems with was my 2003 Roadglide had 2 cranks come apart that was an 88 made into a 103 TW37 cam, thunder header race tuner The second crankshaft was a screaming Eagle also Harley paid for all the parts at 54,000 miles. My opinion is they are only as good as your mechanic and your dealer.

I use Rob as well  :2vrolijk_21:

I have had lots of various bikes without engine troubles. Maybe I am lucky or maybe it's just the way I care for them or maybe a bit of both. I know guys who complain about their bikes who haven't changed their oil in over 10K miles  :nixweiss:
