Title: CVO to Alaska
Post by: Indenial on June 12, 2014, 09:51:54 PM
I thought I'd try this. I've never taken a laptop on a trip before.  I'm on my way to Alaska. Got off at noon today and took off---like a kid at Christmas. Got 400 miles in, partially to get on the road, but mostly to relieve the adrenaline buildup.  I've got 8 days to get the the Fairbanks airport.  My wife is flying in for the Summer Solstice party there.  We'll rent a car and tour the Denali area for a few days, then she'll fly home and I'll continue my adventure.  I'll try to post pics as I go, depending on wireless connections.  Stay tuned.

8 days should give you more than enough time.  The days are long right now so you can get in a lot of miles.   Top off the tank when you can especially when you get up in the northern British Columbia area and into the Yukon.   Nothing but miles and miles of miles and miles up there.   Watch out for buffalo and moose and enjoy the ride.

Timbuck2is right, buy gas every chance you get. I would be packing one or two of those small fuel cans that fits in the saddlebag corners as well. I'm looking forward to hearing of your adventures and seeing the pictures. Ride safe!

Enjoy your trip! Be safe, ride alert, fill the tank every chance you get the further north you get, and last but not least TAKE AND POST A LOT OF PICTURES!

X 2

Perhaps too late to get one but you may want to consider one of these - Saddlebag Gas Tank - One gallon.  One of my buds on our journey had one and he needed it!

DAY 2--  When do the voices stop??  Still hearing people at work telling me what needs to be done--schedules to keep, meetings to go to, emails that need attention, things I still have to do, details---even my wife's "to do" list is still on my mind. The thinking needs to stop!!  But when.

Beautiful sunrise, calm, nice riding this morning.  I snuck through Customs un-violated.  I somehow drew the long straw today with a 35mph tail wind. Talked to some riders at a gas stop that were really having problems with it--just told them they were going the wrong way.  Also stayed North of the rain for most of the day. I got to feel that wonderful burning in my neck and shoulders for several hours, that tells me I'm having a great time.  Nice 700 mile day, but I'm beat. Not much for pics, just a long day in the saddle. Not much here but prairie.

Day 3  Beautiful, wonderful day.  Had a minor episode--after breakfast went out and my saddlebag lid came off in my hand, attached only by the cloth retainer strip.  There is a threaded flat piece of metal that has 5 screws, the screws are about 3/8" long, that only grip the thread by 1 turn max. Over a period of time they had all vibrated out. The last one fell out on the ground when I opened it. I bungied it on and made it to the next Harley shop. Luckily, they had a set of screws.  Take home:  you may want to check and tighten and loktite them on. (they are under the cloth retainer).

It was a bit of Deja Vu today also. You see, last year I was making the same trip and three days into it, my father-in-law died and I had to fly home for 7 days, leaving my bike at the airport here in Edmonton, in the long term parking with all my gear.  Worried the whole time as to whether it would be there when I got back.  He had a stroke three days before I was to leave, but it looked like he was getting better. They were going to put him in a nursing home and start therapy. The family told me to go and I could always come home if needed.  When I got the call, I posted a help note on this site and got several replies. A big thanks to Canuck here in Edmonton. He replied to the posting at 1am when he got home and offered to store my bike. I had gone to bed and got up at 4am to head to the airport. I didn't have the heart to call him at 4.  This site has the greatest members!! Thanks to all who helped during that panic time. When I came back, my bike was fine, but there was not enough time to make it to Alaska. So, I went to Watson Lake and back home through Jasper and Lake Louise.  Now, staying at the same motel. Lots of thinking today about Bill---sure do miss him.

The highlight of my morning:

Looks like you are having some fun and reliving some memories.  Take it all in!

Regarding your question, I upload the photographs to a web hosting site and then copy and paste the BBC img code.  Most photo web hosting sites have links or in some cases just copy the site address with the img code or just copy the web address and use the insert image button.

Enjoy

Chetwynd, a small lumber town, has an invitational chainsaw carving competition each June.  They invite the best carvers from around the world. The town keeps all the carvings.  They have 187 carvings lining the streets in town. Very impressive and some excellent pieces.  You just shake your head and wonder--how

The big dips are called frost heave's and they can be pretty big, like you have probably already experienced.   They have been responsible for throwing an unsuspecting rider right off the bike.  I remember the seeing the majority of them between Haines Junction and Northway Alaska.  That is also the worst stretch of road.

Day 5----No wireless here at the Lodge, they are off the grid, so posted the next day. Got up, raining. Packed in the rain.  Rode 6 hrs in the rain.  I hate the work that rain creates.  Glad I had my FXRG leather coat and Gerbings.  Dry and warm. The clouds parted and started clearing as I left Fort Nelson at 1:00. As far as I’m concerned, this is the start of the Alaska Highway.  It is beautiful.  Lots of gentle twisties along lakes, rivers and mountains.  Something different around each bend.  This is also where I started to see “stuff”.  Lots of bear, moose, goats, deer, buffalo.  The moose and bear didn’t like my Fullsacs.  They scampered to the woods before I could get some good pictures.
Staying at Northern Rockies Lodge on Mucho Lake---gorgeous!  Laird Hotsprings is 35 mi. up the road from here.  My toughest decision today was whether to check in, unpack and drive up there this evening for a dip or wait and stop on my way past in the morning.  I couldn’t decide, so I’ll do both. It was really relaxing after a long cold day in the rain.
I’m really having a hard time with the high sun and the two hr time difference. I usually get up at 5 am, which is 3 am here. And it’s still dark, also the gas stations aren’t open that early even if I ride a couple of hours before I need gas.  So I lay in bed, waiting.

The bridge at Teslin, YK is the most photographed bridge on the Alaskan highway.  It is the third longest bridge on the highway.  It has a steel grate, which will make you pucker..  The best way to cross these is to let go with one hand and "let 'ur float". It's like riding through mud.

No, it's just a Canon point and shoot. I wear it around my neck so I can get to it quick.  I did take a couple of GoPro movies today, but the file size is too big for this site, even a short one.  I use the GoPro for single shots that I want to blow up.  Thanks for the comments.

DAY 8--You notice you don't see any cars in the photos---that's because there aren't any. Maybe see 50/day or so. They are great roads too.  Long slender straights with soft gentle curves, a stripe down the middle inviting you to follow and see where it leads.   OK, well maybe the voices should come back-----my mind is a dangerous place when left idle

I was worried about the road conditions today. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I was thinking 30-40mph for 200 miles.  It was 70mph for about 60 % with bumps from frost heaves. You had to slow down to 50 when hitting them. I assumed they would all be 90 degrees to the shoulder. But a lot were up and down the road, so you just rode them like you would a cross wave in a boat. Up and down the trough.  Like a roller coaster or mild moto-cross, but after two hours even that got old. Then 3 pilot cars for about a mile each, and several gravel sections of 5 mi each. They don't use blacktop, it's rock and sand compacted will a roller and maybe a little oil. That's why they have to rework it all the time.

I was first in line and got to talk to this cute girl for awhile waiting for the pilot car. She wants a Harley---I told her marry a rich man.  She said"well, I'm looking, but there aren't many around here". She is working towards her class C (?) license so she can drive the trucks. She can already drive the "chipper" which lays down chips of gravel in potholes. Interesting talk, then the pilot car came and I was off.

US Customs---was 15 miles past the Canadian Customs.  I was really disappointed when I got through customs.  I was looking to get several good pictures under the Alaska sign. Guess what---there was none!!!   They had some sign in the ditch on the left hand side of the road that you couldn't get to.  I think I'll write the Dept. of Interior when I get home with a "suggestion"..  They surely have the land and space for a nice area.

I stopped for gas 5 miles from Customs and went to prepay, gave the guy $20 to hold and he said " got any American money?"   My mind was still in Canada doing road construction.

90 miles from Customs, I arrived in Tok (long O), AK.  I knew they have 4-5 motels and it was early since I am now 3 hrs ahead of my sleep time.  I stopped at the first one and they had a sign out: Full. She called the others and I literally got the last room in town.  Someone had cancelled 40 min. earlier. At least I made the other guy happy, cuz now he wouldn't get charged.

Tomorrow is Fairbanks and my wife:  can't wait

My wife's flight from Minneapolis was delayed by 6hrs. I think she will be here at 1am her time or 4am my time. Hope I don't screw it up.  I guess we sleep after she gets here. Took my bike to the Harley dealership for an oil change--3500 miles to here. Also, had to buy T-shirts.  Will pick it up Monday when we get back. The dealership is across the street from the motel, so it worked out nice. Got a rental car for the 4 days.  The plan is to drive to Talkeetna to see Denali. But it's only viewable 30% of the time and with all the rain here we may only see clouds.  You'll have to wait and see---(as will we)

If you have time you should take a trip into the park at Denali, even if you don't see the mountain you are sure to see some amazing sights. I spent 2 days hiking/camping there 2 years ago, saw the big mountain a few times but that paled in comparison to all the wildlife and other scenery. Went up on a plane from Talkeetna that was supposed to land on a glacier up on Denali but the cloud cover dropped too low, we still saw a lot of the lower glaciers, awesome sight from above. Weather is definitely unpredictable there, I was in snow on the 4th of July. I highly recommend a meal or 2 at the Roadhouse in Talkeetna, I stayed in a room there for a couple of nights, interesting place with lots of history and awesome food.

DAY 9--Well, Carol finally got here, 6 hrs late due to weather in Mpls.  She got here at 1:30 Alaska time, 4:30 home time.  Well, some idiot friends called at 4:30 Alaska time and woke us up from a sound sleep, to which you can never return.  I should say former friends.  Really tired today.  We had a nice breakfast and got to the park. Started out cloudy and started to clear.  Bought our park tickets and drove the 13 miles into the park.  Not a revelation, just a road like we had been on all day. No wildlife or anything exciting.

As it continued to clear, the day got better. Carol does that for me---she's good luck.  The clouds lifted and the mountain appeared. It was magnificant to say the least.  There is a north and south viewing area, both of which have good views, just different angles. They are about 50 mi. apart. I like the south one better, as far as the angle went. But a cloud had moved into the way and we didn't want to wait for it to pass, as it was getting late. Talkeetna had a nice viewing area too.

Got up to rain. Went to K2 Aviation where I had a reservation to "Fly the Mountain".  It's an hour flight where they land on a glacier and then bring you home.  Was told it's a great adrenaline rush as you are flying the canyons with rock and clouds on both sides and rock ahead, then they turn and it's up another canyon. They cancelled due to the rain. They said it would maybe clear up around 7 tonight, but we couldn't stick around to find out.  I thought of going the night before when it was clear and beautiful, but we were so tired after just 3 hrs sleep, that it wouldn't have been enjoyable.  So there is still one thing on my bucket list. Maybe someday-----

DAY 10--Today was a lazy day. We drove to Chena Hot Springs, 60 mi. NE of Fairbanks. It's a nice resort at the end of the road with a nice hot springs that was too hot. 106 at the middle and 112 near the edges. Couldn't stay in there too long. It would be a hoot in the winter.  They also have an ice museum with a lot of unique ice carvings and four bedrooms where people can stay all night. It's 18 degrees, so I don't know why you'd want to sleep there. They also have weddings there. Also have a bar which was neat.

DAY 11----
Dalton Highway and Arctic Circle

WOW--what a gorgeous day. 13 hrs, 400 miles (half were gravel) and happier than a Jr. High boy after his first kiss--except this was better.  The Dalton highway or Haul Rode goes to Prudhoe Bay and is all gravel. You catch it 100 mi. North of Fairbanks. It's another 100 miles of gravel with patches of blacktop to the Arctic Circle.  I took my tour pack off for the ride to lower the center of gravity and decrease weight. I was fully expecting to dump it a time or two, as I'd seen pics before of the road construction and soft ruts.  But I hit it perfect. It hadn't rained in two days and it was clear today. So it was dry and rough. They use thousands of gallons of calcium chloride on it to reduce the dust and pack the rock. But when it rains, it's slipperier than bear snot.  I just hit some grading and water or chloride on the road when they were grading and luckily I didn't meet any traffic, so didn't have to jump the 12" ridge.  The road was much better than I had envisioned. It's a 40-60 mph road in most places. You get pretty good at reading the road and where to ride. Sometimes it's best in the tire track and sometimes on the crest.  I pulled over and stopped for the big trucks to give them all the room they needed. They appreciate that as they have enough to do without thinking a bike will float into their lane.  I was also concerned about flying rocks. I didn't have that happen at all. The chloride packs them down.  I was concerned that I would cut a tire with all the jagged granite rock tips sticking out, but that didn't happen either. It was just bumpy with some minor potholes. Just the same, after 200 miles on it, I was sure glad to be back on blacktop for the last 100 miles home.  The only gas station between Fairbanks and the Circle is at Yukon River station. So you stop there on the way up and on the way back.  There is a nice visitor center there also with the history of the road and pipeline. The pipeline runs 800 miles to Valdez. Some below ground and some above. The oil starts out at 175 degrees and cools to 115 when it hits Valdez.  There are fins on each support to help cool it. The heat will melt the permafrost causing structural support problems.  When underground they even have to insulate the pipe to help stop the thaw. The pipe is floating on teflon pads, so it can move on the supports in case there is an earthquake. I included the info and history charts for those of you that are interested. You can zoom in on the wording to read it. You may have to download the pic first.

Bridge over the Yukon, just before the gas stop.  The wooden planks are really slippery when wet and the bridge goes up hill from the other side

About 40 miles from the Circle my GPS crapped out---thought I'd just buy one at Walmart in Fairbanks--pretty bummed out--it was either the unit or the direct wiring had loosened from all the vibration---then 40 miles away from the Circle on my way home it started working again---I was too far North--it couldn't get any satellites

Amazed everytime I hit this thread.  It's the first thing I look for when I log into the site each morning.  I'm a history buff anyway so REALLY enjoyed the pics of the right-ups on the bridge/pipeline/history.
Thanks for your effort to take pics of that most majestic country.  While the pics are wonderful, they just don't do it justice.  Sorta like trying to take pics of the Grand Canyon...you just have to be there to get the whole effect.
Rode up to BC a few years ago and should have taken the extra week and hit Alaska....again, one of those "dang, should'a done that" moments.  Guess that means I need to go back.... :2vrolijk_21:

Again, made my morning....thanks a bunch for that.

Be safe, keep the pics coming and have a great trip home....

DAY 11--or 12--   Woke to rain, packed in rain, rode in rain, checked into motel in rain.  Kinda glad it rained though, as it really washed the underside of the engine, fenders, wheels and areas that I couldn’t get to well, to remove the Calcium Chloride from the Dalton.  That stuff is really corrosive. We lived on a 2 mi. gravel road where they used that stuff. It keeps the dust down, but promotes rust and isn’t good on chrome.

Just a couple of pics today. I saw scenes today that I missed when I was going the other way.  It looks different on the return trip.  There were a bunch of people fishing on the river. They parked their cars and took a short walk through the woods to the river.  Hope they did well.  Saw a moose and her calf near a pond next to the highway, but couldn’t get to my camera in time. They were fun to watch, pulled over for several minutes before they skampered.

Bought a can of the spray waterproofing and sprayed the whole can on the tongues of my boots where the fabric is--- guess what-------didn’t work, not at all.   But there just happened to be a pair of FXRG-3 boots on ebay----in size 13---- and it ended today----and I snared them for $50. How sweet is that?  A God thing?

It got me thinking (that’s all there is to do when riding in the rain) about my many blessings.  Something I don’t do enough of is think about the good things in my life.  I am blessed with so much and I take it for granted.  A family that actually loves me, a fantastic team that I get to work with all week, my health and a job that I love.  It just doesn’t get any better than that.  Then I got to thinking—(it was still raining), and Carol and I were able to see Mt McKinley which hadn’t been visible for over a week, there was sun for two days before my Arctic Circle run and the ride was just incredible, then when my boots started leaking, a pair that I wanted was on Ebay and in my  size and I won the auction.  I no longer believe in coincidences and haven’t for a long time.  I know it’s a God thing.  And I appreciate it all-----thank you.

I know the voices will return someday. This trip has allowed me to relax and just be in today.  Today I had a lot of serenity. I called for a motel reservation at Dease Lake in two days.  She asked what date and I said “I don’t know, what day is it today?  I’m beginning to lose track of which day it is (tues, wed?)  I miss my family, my 4 year old granddaughter, the girls at the office, and my black Lab, Toby.  You decide the order----I’m not going there.

Maybe tomorrow it will be sunny and you won’t have to listen to my “thinking”

Agree completely! Quit believing in 'luck' or 'chance' or 'coincidences' several years ago. Found a term about two years ago I like much better. It is the providence of God. I've been richly blessed myself over the years. Try to be continually grateful but frequently forget.

It's been great to follow your ride! Would love to ride down to Rochester some time and hear about it over some chips and guac.

Ride safely home and don't be in a hurry to plug back in!

It was the coldest morning yet. I was getting some slight fogging and opened my faceshield slightly for air.  My eyes were watering and the sun wasn't up yet when I hit the bad construction to Destruction Bay.  I did a couple of "stand ups" that I didn't ask for because I couldn't see the potholes.  Oh Boy---

Dead dog--moved, but not far

Then I had an episode---when filling up with gas when I arrived, I got off the bike and noticed that my sheepskin was not on top of my Airhawk. It was terrible windy so I looked around the gas station lot and didn't see it. Thinking back, it must have blown off when I stopped for flower pics and I didn't notice it. So the big question---do I leave it or ride back however far? and see if it's there-----

Had to stop for a picture---no sheepskin--WTF--with the wind blowing so hard, it must have blown off before I could get on the bike---asked the same question--now it's 25 mi back---figured it was a nice day and the scenery was inspiring so why not---found it in same place and said screw it, into the saddlebag you go---on my way to Whitehorse

About 12 miles out of Whitehorse--road construction--this sweet gal moved me to the front of the line (which is customary for bikes, do to dust and ruts), and offered me coffee as it would be 10 min. for the pilot truck. The lady down the road dropped off three cups for her and she still had a full thermos, so she offered one to me. How special.

No, just to the Arctic Circle. Not enough time, plus the road gets worse north of there. I just was lucky and had perfect conditions with a dry road.  Talked to a guy at the motel tonight and he went the next day and had rain all the way. He was a former motocross rider and said "he needed all of it", meaning experience, as he rode a rented bike to the Circle. The road was terrible slippery.

DAY 14--another beautiful, wonderful day. Started early from Whitehorse and the road was excellent. Got into more mountain country. Nice sweepers and superb vistas. You could see forever, both up and down as the road was half way up the hills.  More lakes also. Today I was the rabbit---although no one was behind me---I guess no one was in front of me either.  Really enjoyed the curves and hills with the road to myself. It was cold starting out, but by noon I was able to put on jeans/chaps and a short sleeve T-shirt.  That hasn't happened since day two.

As the sun was coming up, it hit the trees creating a strobe effect---had it for the first hour and it drove me nuts. Thought I was in a disco. I held my hand up to cover the sun as long as I could.  Give me shade--give me sun--but you can have the strobe

I turned off the Alaskan Highway just short of Watson Lake on Hwy 37, also known as the Cassiar Highway.  It's a whole different road. Narrow, no shoulders, brush right to the edge and lots of blind curves. You just stay on your side and hope the other guy does too--lots of fun and the best scenery. It travels between to mountain ranges and so you are right there looking up all the time

Thanks for all the nice replies. This thing has taken on a life of it's own--I planned on posting a couple of pics a day---someone early on said to post lots of pics---the real problem is I have trouble choosing the best ones.  It takes a couple of hours each night to sort and post.  But it keeps me out of the bars---haven't turned the TV on yet.  A friend gave me the series of Game of Thrones---I'm into the second season and have watched a few on the trip---still don't really know what's going on---but I'll watch a whole show for those special two minutes

That's when you know the trip was exactly what you needed to clear the cobwebs.
Again - thanks for taking us along!

DAY 15---Perfect Day---early start 500 miles of which 350 were twisties and sweepers---the scenery was just like yesterday, so I won't bore you with more pics---had spotty rain sprinkles to 5 min showers on/off all day. I was the only thing on the road--worked on my turns at speed--increasing my sight distance--working nicely.  At the end of the Cassiar Highway is a T intersection---the start of civilization--it's like you go through a curtain from wilderness to the world. Towns every 40 miles, people, cars, traffic.  A mile back--nothing.  Time and distance are meaningless---100 miles is almost there

DAY 16--Woke up to sunny skies---perfect riding weather by noon--then some showers in afternoon.  The countryside has changed since the Cassiar---rolling hills, hay fields, lakes, good roads. Afternoon traffic got bad. Sunday people returning home from the weekend or vacation I guess. Hwy 97 South of Prince George was up and down a valley with magnificent views--openings in the trees where you could see for miles.  Everything was so green.  It was a two lane road with passing lanes every 5 miles or so.  It was kinda funny because when we hit a passing lane a lot of them were going up hill and everyone would jockey for position. The first one would pass and pull in, then the second would pass both and pull in and the third, pretty soon the last one was the first.  Everyone would race when they hit the passing lanes and then slow down when it merged.

But not this one----Had another episode here--it was downpouring hard--I didn't realize how hard unless I looked at the ground and saw the drops jump--I was following a big pickup with a 6 story camper on it--we came to a passing lane going up a 3/4 mile hill---I pulled around to pass---and when I got to his rear tire---his front tire hit a 2" deep river of all the water running down the hill--(the tire tracks were the lowest point on the road)---he threw a 6 ft wall of water across the entire lane---it was too late to slow down, so I just gave it throttle and focused on going straight---that wall of water covered me and for 2 seconds (seemed like a minute) I couldn't see a thing---I don't need that kind of excitement

DAY 17---When will it stop?---Gorgeous day today, got to 70 degrees--In MN we have 10,000 lakes, but no mountains---400/500 miles today was all twisties and no cars, so I could go as slow as I wanted---this is way cool.

I figured out those metal grated bridge decks---I accidently hit one at 60 mph and it felt just like asphalt--the next one I did at 50 and some very slight wobble---so the faster the better

This pic pretty much sums up my day---

Got to take a free ferry---I found this route on www.advrider.com (pretty neat site)--so I'd thought I take it and WOW was it great--the highway ends and you get on a ferry, a trucker I talked with said it would take 10 large semi's or 80 cars--I was hoping I would get on, and turned out they were only 3/4 full---they run on the hour from one side and the half hour on the other, 15 min ride and 15 to load/unload.

The ferry is about 30 miles S of Revelsoke BC on Hwy 23.  Which is just East of Kamloops.  The route the guy had was: from Revelstoke, South on 23--ferry--cont S on 23--then 6 to Nelson. I stayed on 6 South to #3. If you do that, you go over a 6000 ft pass. Most trucks take 3A from Nelson to Creston, with another free ferry just N of Nelson across the Kootenay Lake. This way they avoid a big up and down hill.  I swear I was going downhill for 30 miles. Plus I didn't want to wait for another ferry.

As you can tell, 85% of my pictures are taken on the go----here is how I have the camera set up---I tied a small stout O-ring to the camera with 8# test Firewire and then used a lanyard from one of my dog whistles.  It works great, I just drop the camera when I[m through. I can even work it with thick gloves on.  Then, the girls at the office bought me this light weight tripod, used when I want to be in the pic. I got tired of balancing the camera on my helmet, or a fence post, or a picnic table.  It's about 14" long, has poles like a tent with elastic rope inside, and you just let go of it and it sets itself up in 2 seconds.  Then it takes 10 seconds to fold it back up. Pretty slick--

I've stated it more than a couple times on this thread but it bears repeating.....thanks for all the pics and commentary on this epic trip of yours.  It's been my "first-cup-of-coffee-at-the-office" read every morning since you've started this.  Don't get on the site much during the weekend but did just for this thread to see what you saw for the day.  While the wind/rain/sun/cold was in your face on this journey, it was my pleasure to "ride" along with you.

The Lord, my family, riding into the sunset/sunrise on a long trip are the best things in this life.  This thread and trip of yours emphasized all three.  Thanks for that, brother.

Today was the big push home--625 miles which leaves an easy 300 tomorrow---I've been following a big front so the last 3 days have been perfect---even the ever-present North Dakota cross winds were absent--was able to cruise at 3400 rpm's most of the day---roads were long and flat, except for a few miles on the western end---just pounding pavement from one gas stop to the next

When I get home, I'll post a few notes on equipment that I found essential and some helpful hints for those who are thinking about a long trip.

Now that my trip is almost finished, I sit staring at a long, straight road, re-living the last three weeks.  I have read the thread a couple of times and all the moments instantly return.  I can hear Joan saying “so, tell me more”----

When traveling throughout the Yukon and Alaska, looking out over the vistas seeing the immense forests, the raging rivers and when stopping for a break, hearing nothing---you realize how small you are in this world.  It’s the vastness of the territory that you become a part of---it has to be experienced.

When I think back on all the events ---the one that keeps coming to the top is the Indian kid who gave me his knife.  It was totally not necessary and was a gift from the heart. He will never know how he touched my life.  I don’t even know his name-----

There is another feeling---coming through US Customs---knowing you’re home---back to the security of the United States---it feels good

If you have the desire, the health, and the means---I urge you make the jump and do this trip.  It will challenge your comfort zone (especially when you realize there is no Harley dealer for 1000 miles).

The feeling has changed from one of anticipation and excitement to being satisfied and content. I am ready to be home. I need a hug----

Looks like you got an appreciation kiss thrown in for good measure. Congrats on making all of us on CVOHarley smile as well as that Indian kid.

PS: I have taken to running between 3500 and 4000 for cruising the slab as well.

After all the engine mods I've had done the only way I can get good mileage is downhill at 45mph... Har!

PS: MPG is still better than my FJ or any other cage I have owned.

Well, I made it home about 1:00 this afternoon---7600 miles. Got my hug, took a shower, had a nap, grilled a steak and finally, had a salad. Lettuce is scarse up north.  The trip was 7600 miles for me, not counting our car time.  A trip I would wish on all of you.  If I can answer any of your questions or help in any way, please contact me either by this forum or PM me. All I can give is my experience, strength, and hope---hope you will someday see and experience what I did.  Thanks for being there with me.  Fred

These are some of the thoughts I had while riding and I compiled them over the last two weeks. This is what worked for me:

As my trip is winding down, I thought I would give some of my person comments on equipment for a trip like this.  The biggest thing is to pack for the trip, then leave half of it at home.  We all have our own ways. This is what worked for me:
The must haves:  Good rain gear
Gerbings full jacket and G3 gloves
               Two VISA’s
Modular or full face helmet (not a ¾ helmet)

Rain gear:  I would recommend a good set of gortex riding coat and pants.  Rain gear would be a hassle because it will rain everyday at some point, so you have to wear it all the time.  Also, you need wind protection at 40 degrees and speed.  Also, rain gear “flaps” and that is very fatiguing.  Get a windproof, water proof jacket like a FXRG, Aerostich Darien, KLM or other very good brand. Don’t skimp here.   Same with the riding pants. I just wish the FXRG had a thin nylon hoodie with a Velcro neck and chin protector, which you could put up and wear under your helmet to keep the water from getting on your neck. I haven’t figured that part out yet. It could tuck into the collar when not in use.  I will write HD and make this suggestion. I tried to wear my chaps when I could, but I was changing them several times a day to the riding pants. I have Aerostich Darien light pants and love them, I would get the Aerostich AD-1’s next because they are a low rise and my pants seem to end up under my belly----many of you know what I mean.  But I put them on over my pants and wear them all day.  Warm and dry.  Same with the jacket, windproof is the big thing here.  Unless it has a windproof liner, straight leather will have you cold. Invest some money here, as this is where the biggest benefit will be.  If you’re cold—you’re dangerous.  If you’re cold and wet---you’re dead.  And the feeling of helplessness and loneliness in the middle of nowhere with no place to stop and warm up, can’t be explained.  It plays games with your mind if you think about it too long.  You have to have confidence in your equipment.  My old Boy Scout motto keeps coming back—be prepared.

Gerbings and Gloves:   Hands down, you need electric heat. When I got to Canada I had my Gerbings jacket on all the time. Maybe not plugged in, but on.  The wind chill gets to you after 8 hrs in the saddle, especially when you have 100 miles left to go.  Haven’t worn my fingerless gloves yet. I have Aerostich Elkskin ropers that I wear 70% of the time and Gerbings G3’s that I have to wear every morning, as it’s 40-50 degrees out.  The G3’s tend to get clammy after 2-3 hrs of heat, but they still stay warm.  They claim to have a gortex lining, but they are not waterproof.  I have found after years in the rain, the only thing that will keep my hands dry are the Aerostich Clam finger overgloves. They are great and fast and easy to put on.  They will keep the wind off too. I have a lighter pair of thin leather HD gloves I will wear with these in the rain.  I do tend to sweat with them on, but no water gets in from the outside.

Overpants:  I got the Darien lights from Aerostich several years ago.  The company does a nice job of customer service on getting it right.  I happen to be close enough to drive to Duluth to be fitted. They added 2 inches to the leg length, so when sitting on the bike they kept my ankles covered.  But now I can’t button them----glad they come with a nice belt. It’s the fault of the ice cream and peanuts!!  Other companies make them too. They don’t need to be heavy, just waterproof.   I started out wearing them over my jeans, but the cold wind on my knees gave me a chill.  I now have a pair of Cabela’s fleece pants which I wear over my Smartwool long underware.  With this combo, my legs don’t get cold.

Title: Re: CVO to Alaska
Post by: Indenial on July 03, 2014, 09:09:29 PM
Underware:  I have come to like Smartwool.  It works well for me. I have lots of Underarmour too, but the smartwool is better I feel. It still insulates when wet and dries fast.  I wear the thin long johns under my fleece pants, under my Darien Lights.  On top, I wear Smartwool long sleeve pull over, then a Smartwool ¾ zip thin long sleeve, my Gerbings and FXRG and that’s all.  Keeps me very warm and dry.   And it cuts way down on the packing.  I don’t need a bulky sweatshirt. On the way home, I found that the Smartwool kept me cool with my jacket on and the air vents open.

VISA:  Everyone has traveled enough to know that sometimes one card won’t work and you need another card.  Call your bank and tell them you will be on a trip, so they understand the charges from strange far away places.  You could also hide a second card on the bike somewhere in case you lose your wallet.  I don’t and keep everything on my person. I just keep checking to be sure I have it all at each stop, Passport, cash and wallet. Just be very conscious of it.  I used to be afraid of robbery, but I feel safer in Canada than I do at home. Just great people up here.  When in the States, I always carry my pistol on trips.  You can’t cross the border with one though.  I talked to a game warden in Canada and he said it was because they have to register all their handguns and there would be no way to register them if people could bring them across the border.

Packing:  go light.  I don’t camp, as I want a warm room to dry stuff out and a hot shower at the end of the day. My camping days are over. So without the camping gear, I pack so I don’t need to put an extra bag on the tour pack.  I wear one pair of jeans and that’s it. I don’t pack a spare. If they get wet, they dry out. (But they won’t get wet if you have gortex overpants). If you wear riding pants, they won’t get dirty. So, I have one pair of jeans, one pair of fleece pants.  One short sleeve T shirt and one long sleeve T shirt. As you will buy a couple of T shirts on the way.  And I only wear them at night to a restaurant, otherwise I wear my smartwool.  I wear LDC riding underware and really like them.  I wear them everyday and have two pairs of Underarmour shorts for night after a shower for a couple of hours. I wear short PJ’s and T shirt for sleeping.  I’m not too concerned about smell, as I’m a guy and it’s only me.  I usually will wash all my stuff half way through a trip.

Socks:  one pair thick Smartwool, 2 thin pr for night wear after a shower. One pair can be worn during the day if it warms up enough.

Boots:  just be sure they are waterproof.  My Bates gortex boots worked well for three years and this trip they leaked bad. I think it is the tongue fabric.  I just bought a pair of Harley FXRG boots, so I hope they are better.  (they are waiting at home)

Lodging:  I stay in the cheapest motel I can find. I like the small ones with the doors to the parking lot so I can park my bike right outside.  I also like to help out the private motel owners, instead of the corporations.  In the states you can find them for about $70-$80, but in northern Canada, Yukon, Alaska expect to pay $110 to $160/night.  Stuff is just more expensive up there.

Gas:  fill up often when up north and towns are far apart. You’ll need 150 mile range. My 6 gal tank was no problem.  Had it down to the 40 mi. range three times, according to my bike.  Always gas up when you get to your last town, BEFORE checking into a motel.  If you check in first, you may shower and say “I’ll get gas in the morning”. Beware, because the stations don’t open early. And with the 2-3 hr time difference, 8 am home time is really 5 am in Canada (assuming CST).

Maps:  Get a book called “The Milepost”.  It takes you mile for mile on all the major Canadian and Alaska highways.  It is considered “the bible” for Alaskan trips. Tells you where gas is and motels.  But don’t go completely by it, I saw one gas station was out of gas, just due to demand.  And a GPS is most helpful. That way you don’t need to bring paper maps.
Distance:  we all can ride for different lengths of time.  I usually ride a couple of hard days at the start of the trip when I’m fresh. After a week, I find 400 miles is about right. That usually takes me 10 hrs with stops.  I usually try to stop after the first tank of gas for a café breakfast. It gives me a good rest and good food, then I can go until dinner.  We all have different mile ratings.

Cost:  figure $250-$300 per day.  Gas: 50, Motel: 120 avg., Food: 50-60,  breakfast was 20 with tax and tip and dinners are 18-30 w/o tip, there are a lot of Subway’s here which help cut down the costs. snacks and drinks: 20.  $300 would give you enough for an oil change and a few T shirts as well.  I figured this trip cost me about $5000, not counting Carol’s expenses.

The motorcycle miles were: 7600

Ya I saw it once right smack in the middle of the road on the white line,  only one on the road perfectly centered.  At first I thought someone had done it but upon closer examination it was a bear.   LMAO

I've been checking out the Aerostich Darien Light jacket and pants that you recommend.  Boy, they are pricey but from everything that I've read the quality is exceptional.  I wear a 46 or 48 coat so I'm assuming that's an XL?   It looks like a guy might pick up a good used one on eBay but I haven't seen my size on there yet.

There Combat Light boots look pretty good too.

Is there anything better than the Aerostich that's out there?

I want to thank everyone who has replied. It makes it all worthwhile.  I hope people enjoyed it.

Cowboy, as far as the coat and jacket. I'm happy with the Aerostich stuff and I would buy them again. ( I would get the AD-1's as they fit more like jeans , but for $300+, what I have is just fine.). But you can check this forum for advice on clothing.  http://www.advrider.com/forums   I have found a lot of helpful info there.

Perhaps too late to get one but you may want to consider one of these - Saddlebag Gas Tank - One gallon.  One of my buds on our journey had one and he needed it!

Just saw this question.  It depends. I've done both types of long trips and I enjoy the solitude.  It seems like, as I get older, I enjoy and need some time alone to readjust the clock, to let the voices stop, and allow the colors to come out.  That way I can go at my own pace and enjoy what I want to enjoy. Get up early in the morning, without a conference the night before to find out when all the guys want to leave.  Eat when I'm hungry and not have to decide which restuarant we eat at.  Stop riding when I'm tired and not have to choose from multiple motels.  As long as you can block out of your mind what might happen if you break down in the middle of no where, alone, then for me, it's kinda fun to do a solo trip.  I had a trip to SE United States planned for this summer- 2015. One guy backed out and another decided to go see his daughter in Brazil, so I'm going alone again and looking forward to it.

To answer your question: If going to Alaska again, since there is only one main road to get there, it would be fun to go with someone else, let them lead and live the trip through their eyes.

I did 800 kilometres yesterday at my own pace, stopped where I wanted  and enjoyed every second. I stopped riding with groups after witnessing a few serious accidents where the riders ego wrote cheques their ability couldn't cash. Not much fun sitting on the side of some remote road waiting for an ambulance with a badly injured rider.

I stopped riding in large groups in 1996 after a disastrous local toy run.  WILL NOT do that again.  I like groups of 4 or less most of the time unless the others are experienced riders.  Otherwise, a one bike group will suffice.  A single bike and 1,000 miles of highway can clear the head....

Preach on, Simon!

Besides the great scenery, I think that's why we enjoy these kind of threads from folks like Fred/Indenial.  For those of us that have taken on a cross country trip alone (or maybe with one other bike) once or numerous times, it brings back many great memories.  For those that have yet to venture on one, it's inspiration to get out there and do it.   :2vrolijk_21:

I think that's why we enjoy "Easy Rider" so much.  It's not the drugs, women or anything other than the TRIP.  They had a destination but it was the trip that was the story....oh, so true

I just re-visited my old thread this past weekend. Wow what a trip. I just wanted to emphasize to anyone who is/has thought about doing a trip like this to "just do it".  There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of some aspect of this trip.  I have a picture enlarged to a poster of the Arctic Circle in my office. It was a blessing for sure.  I am aware of several people that were planning the trip, but some reason couldn't do it.  Others had to cancel out do to other riders canceling.  There will always be a reason not to go.  But when you do it, the memories just don't go away.  Ask Dawg, who made the trip last summer--Congratulations.  I'm sure he would be more than happy to answer questions as well.

Thanks so much for your Ride Report, it was/and is, and enjoyable read.

It is a very interesting post and read.  I just retired and either this spring or next I am riding around the country in a rectangle(with zig zags). I have some places I just need to stop (family) and others I just want to stop.  I will be doing this alone except my wife will fly up to the NE for last section down the east coast to ride with me.  That is if work will let her.  She is real worried about 3 to 4 weeks of riding alone but I look forward to it. I am just starting the planning for the trip.

Others had to cancel out do to other riders cancelling.  There will always be a reason not to go.  But when you do it, the memories just don't go away.  Ask Dawg, who made the trip last summer--Congratulations.  I'm sure he would be more than happy to answer questions as well.

Absolutely!!!! This was by far the best trip I have ever taken. Even though I had 2 friends cancel at the last minute, I still went. My Mother and Laura both begged me not to do it alone. It really isn't that hard of a trip EXCEPT for the last 300 miles of the Alaska Highway in the Yukon. If you have ever thought about this DO IT!!!!!

You will find plenty of places to stay along the way. Also there was plenty of gas on my entire trip from Maryland. The only place I will tell you that you will want a reservation is in Toc Alaska. It's kinda of a staging area in and out of Alaska. The last 300 miles of the Alcan Hwy in the Yukon will be the worse. Make sure you take Hwy 37 on your way home. It is at the Yukon/British Columbia line. It runs off to the right. That is one of the best riding on the entire trip. Oh and watch for Bears!!! Other then that enjoy your trip and post a lot of pics!!!!

Absolutely. A lot of people have called me crazy for doing it alone. But the other two Fireman backed out at the last minute. One even said you won't go by yourself. My reply, WATCH ME!!!!! If you have even thought about this trip DO IT. If you have any questions or concerns, just ask.

I can add... many of the sections of road traveled since your trip, have had major improvements.

At least that's the word I get from friends that live here and travel back and forth more often than I used to.

What an adventure. Coming up on a year ago I did the trip with my brother in law. The info provided by Indenial was extremely helpful and I am grateful. Its amazing how many pictures in his thread we got to see in person. The views every day were amazing. Its not looking like we will take a long one this year so I am retrospective. We took 41 days and did 13000 miles Chesapeake Va to Alaska, looped Alaska then to Seattle, Glacier national park, and back home.

If you are planning a similar trip, read his post carefully especially on gear. We had done month long trips  across the US but never had this much extreme change in conditions. Thought we knew gear. It rained off and on every day for the first two weeks and at the end of that two weeks it was just on. After that only a little rain but had to gear up a few times.  In late June a low pressure system set in and we had 42 degrees and rode in a torrential downpour for a half day out of Edmonton before we had to stop and dry out and warm up only made 100 miles that day. Our brand new waterproof gloves leaked like a sieve as did my brother in laws Harley Davidson rain suit which had never failed him before. Heated gloves grips seats coats and socks couldn't keep him warm soaked to the bone in fire hose rain.
In Alaska a week later it was 90 degrees and so much smoke in some places you had to wear a mask, woke up one day to ashes on the bike from the wildfires. We couldn't do the hot springs the smoke got so uncomfortable on the ride there.

Stopping to take off your gloves so you can take pictures with the camera cell phone gets old quick. We missed a lot of pics because I was too cheap to buy a $90 waterproof camera I could hang on a lanyard to grab and shoot.
Get the Co2 inflation kit and plugs, we needed it once even though we started the trip with new tires, and also were able to help out a BMW rider stranded with a flat in the rain. If you need replacement cartridges on the road bicycle shops and RCI have them.
If you get bear spray be sure it is readily available and you know how to use it cause if you have to take off your gloves its too late. The huge black bear 15 feet up on a ridge right beside the Cassiar highway looked like a stuffed bear. He was so still and classically posed with one front leg up and head turned toward me. As soon as I went by he trotted down the hill. Glad I didn't stop for that pic!
Wow we got to meet some interesting people and some very kind people. The Iron butt rally was going on and we met a participant riding a Road Glide with an extra gas tank that looked like a mini keg strapped on the back seat. While we were stopped waiting for construction in Alaska he explained how he was using mold-ex mildew spray for complete personal hygiene. Met one guy from PA on a KLR650 carrying three extra tires stopped a gas station. He was eating a sandwich and drinking a cup of coffee and said he usually rode for three or four days straight before he stopped to sleep. He only had two weeks for his trip.  When we asked him how he did it he said nicotine patches and coffee. The long distance rider from Tennessee who had started in Argentina was going to Dalton highway and then back home. Met him the day we stopped for good out of Edmonton in the pouring rain he had tennis shoes and waterproof socks and was looking for a place to get boots.
At some point I am going to shout out to alllllllll the places that bailed us out with tools for repairs due to my brother in laws voyager trike kit that as it turns out was improperly installed by the dealer. We broke down a lot until we figured it out!

Well, 6 yrs to the day, I turned it to 100K from my last pic of 50K.  It's been a hoot and I'll continue to ride until I can't.  I just returned from seeing Carol Burks near Dallas to get some Ohlin shocks put on.  He's a great guy and I can't believe the ride.  I now float and the curves are so tight and secure. Wish I'd have done this 50,000 miles ago.
Spent 5 days in the Ozarks on my way home testing them out.
