Tire options for the Springer.. stock rims.
« on: January 02, 2011, 02:21:58 AM »

So.. my '08 Springer has arived in Australia and will undergo the mods it needs to be certified and licensed in Australia.
Part of the certification involves fitting new tires that meet Aussie specs (yes, the rule makers are that dumb.. 300,000,000 Americans riding on tires that meet US specs.. but they're not good enough for Australia ?)

Anyway, I can get the tires upgraded during the cert.. but I need to know what will go straight on to the stock rims.. same sizes, etc.
What are my options ?
I did some searching, but couldn't find much in standard sizes.

Wish I could help, but my tire sizes are different being that I have an 09.   Probably another reason that makes this difficult for another to answer is that you are looking for Aussie specific tires.  There probably is just a handful of 08 springer owners in the same boat that know the answer, much less have actually been to this site.

Quick question, are you looking for brand or are you also in need of the OEM tire specs to help with a match up?

Thanks for the reply Envithyx..

I don't think they really need to be Aussie specific. Anything that's available from the major manufacturers will probably be available in Australia and have passed the necessary compliance issues.
I know that makes no sense.. I have to take off the tires that the bike has fitted from the US, and replace them with basically the same tires, but with Aussie compliance.. Bureaucracy !

So, I know the sizes and specs of the stock tires, but I've got the impression that most here don't think the Dunlops are that great, and I'd like to replace with something like Metzelers, Avons, Michelins... if there's a comparible size and spec I can use.
Standard tires on the '08 are -
Front: D407 130/70R 18 63V
Rear:  D407 200/55R17 78V

I see, so not specific Aussie tires, only they have to be certified by them..

K, not sure if these qualify as certified, but here's some info to help in your search.

Last summer I put Avon Cobras on my '06 FX Springer and I really like them. Ed

and these might lead to something:

I replaced both of mine with the Dunlops that originally came on the bike, but I'm seriously considering going with Metzlers on my next replacement.

seems thats about all I could dig up from the site.

Good luck finding something.

Thanks for your help Jeff.. I appreciate it  :2vrolijk_21:

It looks like the Avon Cobras might be the go..
They're listed as available in Australia in the same sizes as the stock Dunlops.
