Just happened to see a YouTube video today about this. Guy traveling needed a new rear tire and stopped at H-D dealer who told him their 'policy' required him to purchase a new front tire also so they would be 'matched.' His front tire had only 1,600 miles and was the same brand - Dunlop. I'm astounded. I thought I'd heard it all but this one takes the cake.

:soapbox: Sadly, this is evidence of Harley-Davidson's corporate attitude. They don't seem to care and they think their customers are stupid. Look at the current bikes and the features that have been removed or cheapened while prices skyrocket. Need I say more?

A rider comes in for an oil change. The dealer "checks his tire tread depth" and determines it needs replacement. They REFUSE to release the bike to the rider unless the tire is replaced. They claim it's a safety and liability issue. The rider has two choices, have the dealer install a new tire at dealership prices, or call for a tow truck come from the bike.
So the rule of thumb is NEVER let the bike INTO the shop if the tires are close.

Screw that. Call the police. They can claim whatever they please. It's my bike and that would be as close to black letter property conversion as a good tort attorney might ever hope for.

Absolutely call the police. I have been in the automotive repair business for 40 years. You cannot keep a customer's vehicle unless there is an un-satisfied bill. Given that dealerships argument I could have sold a lot more tires and brakes.

He found a local indy who had a tire in stock and mounted and balanced it for him. Here in my area there are no indy shops . . . and while my dealer has gotten insanely pricey ($130/hr labor to 5% shop supplies) he is not a fanatical lunatic.

Labor prices and some of the practices around here have been flat ridiculous for quite some time. The dealerships refuse to install any tire purchased elsewhere including HD/Dunlop which is their prerogative but they insist on calling their decision a liability issue. If you do buy your tires from them installation charges are 1 hr. labor (on the bike) each, plus of coarse shop supplies and disposal fees. One dealership about 20 minutes from me is now charging $165 an hr.! The cheapest Indy shop around that I am aware of is $100 an hr.

I buy the tires on internet and carry my wheels into a shop that a friend owns, he charges $40.00 to mount and balance each one, to me it's a little steep, but he won't damage the wheels, we use to work together a local Honda dealer back in the late 70's.
Back then we charged 1.00 hour on the bike and .50 hour carry in, of course the labor rate then was probably $60.00 per hour

Our local HD dealer offers a “free tire install”.
There are some restrictions of course and does not include weights.
You also pay for:
Tire disposal fee
Tire tax
Contact cleaner
Shop towel use.
I like to change my own so I can check everything else and clean everything as I go. I don’t get that from the dealer as part of the “free”.
I’ve got the time and equipment, but some people don’t!

I always remove my rims and take them to a shop to have my new tires (purchased online) mounted and balanced. I just had a new rear tire put on and the dealer (an H-D dealer) did it for $50. I am willing to pay $50 because other shops in my area charge $80 and more to put on a new tire. That's crazy! This is the last dealer in my area I am willing to spend my money at. The rest can die for all I care.

Mounting tires on the wheel is a small part of the job, as mentioned earlier taking time to clean is crucial to me especially the individual calipers making sure the pistons work smooth too. I’ve witnessed lots of tire changes at shops and not one time have I seen a caliper inspected and cleaned. I’m sure they would upon request. YMMV
