tire repair
« on: January 24, 2007, 05:25:06 PM »

my friend who although he rides a beemer had a great idea. he was about to change the rear tire a metzler 880 and decided to practice using tire plugger before it was actually needed on the road. he had a stop & go kit and found that the file/probe couldnt be forced through the steel belt. said he wound up ruining the file/probe. someone else had a better probe and they managed to plug it. i have the stop & go kit so i may have to find a better quality kit [smiley=banana.gif]

I am very interested in getting a kit before I head up to Nelson this summer from Houston.  What do people use for air pump?

BTW I would be especially want to buy an overpriced, MOCO branded, chrome CVO version if they have one.  ;D

The local dealer has this stuff...I think it's put out by the folks who make that Green Slime chit (I wouldn't use the green slime in the tire)...but they make a little compressor that plugs into the lighter....it's about the size of two packs of cigs, so it wouldn't take up much space at all.  It would probably take a while to get the tire aired up, but it does work. CO2 cartridges work too, and some of the plugging kits come with those. I've got one of those kit's for my mountain bike's tool pouch.

I have the stop n go kit on my bike & had to use it on our last trip to Vegas. One of the bikes picked up a cotter pin of all things in the middle of nowhere. We pulled the pin and had absolutely no problem installing the plug which he rode on for about 80 miles with no problems to the closest dealer for repairs. I thought it worked great. Did he try to puncture a hole with the probe? Because in reality the hole will already be there & the tool is just to reem it large enough for the plug.

I'd plug a tire to get me out of the middle of nowhere, but I'd be  :nervous: nervous :nervous: as ever while getting there.  Bagger don't play with messed up tires. :nervous: :nervous: :nervous: Makes my skin crawl.

I carry a full size kit which consists of shop quality tools and CO2 pump.

Since I have the compressor on the bike for the shocks I've often thought of fabbing something to do a tire if need be. Procrastinator. ;)

Puzzled...I've been thinking of the same thing but haven't checked into it yet...all it would take is a screw on hose to tap into the schraeder valve on the left side of the bike (I left that piped up when I put the legends on) like the little hand pump HD sells, and a quick connect on the other end...need to get off my A$$ and see what I could come up with...

I carry a cell phone and I would call the local Harley-Davidson dealer to replace my tire

If for some reason I can't get a H-D dealer I would call a local motorcycle shop to come to my aid

If I strike out on both of my 1st options
I would call a local flat bed tow truck and have him take me to a local tire dealer to do a patch/plug combo, then replace tire ASAP

I know, I know I am not Old School on this matter, a plugged motorcycle tire just scares me to much to be riding at highway speeds

Terry

I have one of those.
Works great.
Even used it at Maggie Valley to add some air.
In the middle of no-where I would plug a tire in a heartbeat.
Then change it asap when I got the bike home or to a shop.

(Leave a CVO or my Frontier on the side of the road with a flat,,, I don't think so)

Good to hear that little device works well, Chip.

I'm with you on the plug in the tire...I'd do it in a heartbeat.  If you get a good plug in there, it's not going to come out suddenly, as long as it's just a nail or something like that, a plug will work well.  Of course, I'd head at a slow rate of speed to the next dealer and get a tire.
