Bike died
« on: June 07, 2015, 03:03:11 PM »

'15 CVO Street Glide 800 miles.....riding home on a side street this afternoon and the bike just stop running. Cranking sounds a little strange and no spark. Friend got it home and I am calling Harley tomorrow to come pick it up and fix it. Not the way to end a nice Sunday ride.

Just checked......no codes in the computer.

No good. Who are you going to use for the repair?

Just returned from Americade. Bike is rough on start up once in a while, throwing a code and part number which is the speedo/tach combo. Need to have it looked at.

:oSometimes stuff happens....sounds like a coil, bought a new road king once and it won't start when I got done fueling it up, the electric fuel pump wire had come loose.

Sorry about your day!

Checked for spark while waiting for the truck....didn't have any. Going to call Miracle Mile HD since I know them over there....at least I am more comfortable with their service than the other local dealer--but since they are 5 miles farther away than the other dealer they may not pick it up. If they give me a problem I may just have to call road side assistance and let them take it to the closest dealer.

Either way I am sure this is going to suck :(

Dealer can't get to the house to pick up until Wed afternoon. Better than letting roadside assistance do it I guess.....

Remove plug boot from plug, use screwdriver from your CVO tool kit, stick small flat blade between ring that snaps on plug and boot, hold screwdriver about 3/16" from head fin and crank engine. Its crude but will tell you if you have spark.

Found the plug and re-seated it.....still no good.....also--checked with my spark tester. Looks like I have spark. Maybe we didn't see it on the side of the road. Either way, it still doesn't start.

Is this the dealer you bought the bike from?  If so, I think I'd be having a conversation with the dealer principle.  New bike, 800 miles, it dies on the road, and his ace service team can't respond?  That would be the last nickel I'd spend in his place, and I'd make sure to let him know that.

Not the selling dealer. This is the local dealer that wanted $3k over sticker. I'm happy he is picking it up in the enclosed truck instead of me having to call roadside assistance and dealing with them.

I don't think it would crank if the security system was triggered....and it would not die while I was riding.

So it cranks but won't start?

Sounds like it could be a fuel delivery issue. Can you check the fuse for the fuel pump?  Does the fuel pump prime when you switch on the ignition?

I hear the pump prime when I hit the switch to run.

Mike,
FWIW, I was up there yesterday morning waiting to talk to Steve at the service desk while he was on the phone telling another customer the same thing and rescheduling pick ups. The driveshaft broke, the truck was in the parking lot. Yeah, that sucks waiting until Monday hopefully its a quick turn around.

Right above the starter under the seat tray is a plug. I've knocked it loose cleaning the bike and it would crank and not start. Worth a look....

Just called a little while ago and the guy says...."well it's got spark" and I say.." I know, I checked" and he says " that means it's fuel related and we need to start looking there and maybe in the tank"

nothing like stating the obvious.......that was a 2:00...do I call again today or wait until tomorrow?

Sure feels that way....but I have bought several bikes from them in the past...just not this one since they wanted $3k over MSRP.

Do you have other dealer options in the area?  Between the attitude of the service writer and the apparent lack of skills of the technician, I think you're heading down a dark alley in this place...   :nervous:

One other....but at this point I will need to trailer the bike out of there and take it to the other dealer. I have never bought anything at the other dealer so who knows how that will go. We will see what happens when I call later today.

Warranty work is the same for every shop.  It's not like they get more if you buy and service at the same dealer. Service and sales are opposite!

One week old My new 14 SE Ultra died while I was in N. Carolina! Luckily Mr. Tilley from Tilley's Harley got my bike in and they found in the fairing that there were two plugs that were not properly seated. Reseated them and the bike road like a charm till some 17 year made a left in front of me and totaled the bike, me too!  Lol  Good Luck!

Warranty work is the same for every shop.  It's not like they get more if you buy and service at the same dealer. Service and sales are opposite!

In the automotive business good service can and does lead to more sales, and you would think it should work that way at Harley stores as well.  However, when you have a market with very little competition, like the motorcycle market, all too many dealers blow off the service side of the business as just another expense to be cut.  I remember fighting that attitude with car dealers back in the 70's, when the Big Three controlled the market and were happy to just trade customers back and forth.  Things changed when competition from Japan finally shook up the complacent folks running the Big Three as well as the dealers who survived the purge.  What the motorcycle market really needs is that same sort of thing, but unfortunately all we really see is H-D corporate promoting and enforcing anticompetitive policies that protect the bad dealers.  I keep hoping the other companies like Polaris can eventually take a big bite of the market and wipe the smirks off the faces of those folks at H-D.

You are right Jerry......I remember years ago only the foreign car dealers had service open on Saturday, then the American car dealerships had to do that to keep up.

They've had the bike for over a week and still haven't diagnosed the problem?  I would get it the hell out of there ASAP.

Probably one of those "didn't buy it here so it goes to the bottom of the list" dealerships.  Makes me mad every time I read one of these threads.  Then we occasionally get reports like the recent one from phato1 about Bumpus that give us hope, since at least some dealerships do things the right way.  I wonder what it's going to take to have more like Bumpus?  Most likely divine intervention, since I don't see H-D doing anything at their end to improve dealer service.

They cancelled the pickup last Wed and re-scheduled for Monday so they have had the bike 3 full work days. I just called and I spoke with someone else who told me they are going to get back on it tomorrow morning (hopefully).

The whole "our techs work on more than one bike" thing has got me pissed...just stay on mine, fix it then move on! I am sure they are working on the services or upgrades for their customers and sticking mine in when they can...... >:(

The last bike I had at a dealership for a repair (other than the accident repair on my '10) was a warranty rear rocker box gasket on my Softail in 1999........Lets hope this one never sees the inside of a dealer service dept again either.

I know this is frustrating and one of the things I do is discuss with the service manager what/how they are going to trouble-shoot the problem.  At least this way I know if they have a plan or not.  If they say they don't known until they get into it is not a plan....and ask more questions.  When I had a ECM problem on my Road King I spoke to three different shops about the problem and flat out ask if they would be interested in working on the bike.  Two said they would be happy to check it out and the third say they would but it felt like he was doing me a favor (and this was my Hog Chapter Dealer)

Your bike won't start.  This should be easy since it is not an intermittent problem.

I feel your pain and good luck and I bet it will take them 5 min to fix the problem once the figure it and get the part!

High pressure line inside the fuel tank popped off!!!!   It may not have been seated correctly by the dealer that replaced the tank under warranty a few weeks ago. Just happy it disconnected when I wasn't too far from home.

Not to mention the 3 days it took for the dealer to get to it to make a 1/2 hour repair (probably less)

Going to pick it up later this afternoon.

Didn't reread the thread but thought I remembered early you saying you didn't hear fuel sounds inside the tank?  I know I started to ask once if you had but then thought I remembered you already saying that was discounted.  If I remembered wrong I'm sorry for not asking MJ; could have been an easy fix.  My bad buddy.  Glad it's home soon :2vrolijk_21: .

Glad it's all back together. Still a long time for that kind of repair, especially when they were in there before...

It was not the same dealership. The selling dealer in Ct replaced the gas tank and the bike was towed into a local dealer on Long Island. Whatever HOG does not cover for the Sunday night tow, the selling dealer said they would make it right.
