Kuryakyn Blind Spot Mirrors
« on: November 04, 2007, 11:34:16 AM »

Wanted to eliminate some "drag" on my bike so decided to take off my stock handlebar mirrors and try Kuryakyn's new blind spot mirrors with built-in turn signal lights.  This required drilling holes in my inner fairing as the mount location is identical to the FLHX, but they provide a template for drilling the holes that is spot on.  Simple install and wiring for mirrors plugs into your harness.  I have to point out that the harness initially provided was wrong, for some reason Kuryakyn ordered harnesses for separate turn signal connections from the main harness. This arrangement is only applicable for Road Glides, not Electra Glides.  The Electra Glide harness uses a single six pin connector.  I called Kuryakyn, they were aware of the problem, made the correct harness and shipped immediately.  Everything worked perfectly.  Kudos to Kuryakyn for excellent customer service :2vrolijk_21:  I really like these mirrors, the visibility is good (still see some knuckles) even with the Wild 1 575's and the turn signals are very visible.  Bike also looks cleaner and I think I picked up an mph or two! ;D

Pete, are they just t/s or t/s and running lights?  Also, how about trying to grab a low light image sometime with the lights working?  Might look pretty cool.

Took a short video with my digital camera, however, it has a .wmv file extension that I can't post.  Any other options?

Try this...

Dammit.

That's what I was afraid of Pete.  You really suck.

I like those.

Had been keeping an eye on the listing at Kuryakyn since they'd been posted pre-release.  Really wanting to see a set actually on a bike.  Have never really been a fan of any of the fairing mounted mirrors seen so far.  Not wild about boring big holes in the inner fairing either.  Was really afraid I was going to like these whenever finally saw them on a bike though.

Dammit.... Those look good. :drink:

Ok, need to get all nosey about more details.

What is the mount like?  Is the inner support such that you're not worried about adding stress or even eventually cracking the inner fairing?

We've got the same handlebars.  Strictly from the photo it looks as if the mirrors aren't high enough above the bars to clear.  How much of your hands and arms do you see (if any)?

How well met is their "no blind spot" promise?  Is it a good wide range of vision? Both inward and outward in each mirror?

Are the LEDs in the mirrors able to be serviced?  Or if a light ever goes out is a complete mirror the only option?

With the mirrors at the angle they'll be mounted to the fairing and adjust for vision how far around the bike toward the front will the signal light still be visible?  Good view from the side streets of an intersection or cars you're in the process of passing?

Thanks for pic and vid Pete.  Just glad that Christmas is coming :2vrolijk_21: .

If I suck, your a pain in the a$$! ;D

No worries about cracking the inner fairing, the mount is the same as the HD version with hard plastic disc between inner fairing and securing nut.  I have the Hawg wired speakers which required removing the support bracket which normally stiffens that area, but the mirrors are very light and cracking the fairing is not a concern.

Depending on how you like to position the mirrors, I don't see my arms at all and only the tops of my knuckles.  I position the mirrors so about 1/4 of the mirror views traffic directly behind me while the rest of the mirror focuses on the other lane.

Not sure why they call them blind spot mirrors, yours or the cages?  I use them to see directly behind me and to view traffic coming up on me in the opposite lane.  I always swivel my head anyway, never rely solely on mirrors

I don't know the answer to this question, didn't ask Kuryakyn, but the LEDs can be replaced without replacing the complete mirror.

View of the lamps around the bike is good.  Unlike the HD mirrors, the mirror edge sticks out beyond the fairing so the LED lamps can be seen let's say 120 degrees I guess, perhaps more.  I can put her outside at night and check if you like.

Overall the visibility is not as good as the mirrors they replaced and the vibration in the fairing is greater than on handlebars (at least during idle and slower speeds which is a function of the engine rpm),  so your eyeballs will have to get used to it, HOWEVER, for me they are located in a more natural viewing position while riding, the vibration disappears at speed, the turn signals are a plus and they look real good.  Our handlebars make the visibility worse than stock bars, but for me it is acceptable.  I considered mounting them a little higher, which is possible to do as they are elliptical shaped, but didn't.  No regrets though, would do it again.

Thanks for all the insights Pete.  Very much appreciated.  It's just hard to pull the trigger on a mirror when it's replacement means a big honking hole in each side of the fairing if you don't care for it.  All the insights minimize a lot of that worry.

How long have you had them on?  No mirror is ever going to do away with a head check but it's good to read they seem to be adequate to the task.

My pleasure Don.  Understand your concern, had the same myself, but eventually said what the hell...Been riding with them for a week, the more I ride with them the more I get used to them.

Pete, I noticed in our video that the running lights did not operate on the mirrors. Guess they are turn signal only, or could they be wired to make the running lights work.

Then if they are on, would they distract you while riding at night

Brian, they are wired as turn signals only and you can't modify as running lights.  You would need a three conductor wire from the mirrors and it only comes with two.  They would not distract you if they could.

Well did you eliminate the "drag," you can tell your wife that, but that excuse won't work here!  Just admit it, you wanted it, it kicks @ss so you did it. Looks really clean, I like it!  Will think about doing it after the wheels get here.

Thanks for the post , I was looking on the Kury site at them yesterday. It looks like the have a bit better range than the stock ones on my FLHX and the turn signal is a plus.

I liked these when seeing them too Nidan.  Boring a hole in the inner fairing is a hard thing to do though.  Can't make that leap; at least not yet.  Think I'm actually going to have to see a set in person that are installed on a bike.

Also not sure I like the chrome mounted on the inner as well as I'd like a paint matched part on the inner.  Damn, I think I'm picky... :nixweiss:

Also not sure I like the chrome mounted on the inner as well as I'd like a paint matched part on the inner.  Damn, I think I'm picky... :nixweiss:
That's what makes all our bikes so great.......the little differences w/in the overall approach to personalization (is that a word?)......and you don't have the mkt. cornered on being 'picky'.  ::) har!  :huepfenlol2: spyder

I have to agree.  Not that brave to do in the 1st place and don't want any more possible problems down the road.

I'm right there with you. When the '06 CUSE's came out and I saw the leather dashboard pad I was really wanting one until I found out that holes had to be drilled to put it on. :nervous: Needless to say it got removed from the wishlist fast.

Sometimes you don't have a choice.  For example, I chipped the paint around the air temp gage that would be covered perfectly with the new chrome radio bezel, BUT, the new chrome radio bezel doesn't look good by itself until you add the leather dash pad.  I figured adding those two items, drilling holes and all, was better than re-painting the inner fairing!  Cheaper too.  So when it came to the mirrors I said WTF.  They look damn good, are functional enough for me (once I pass you now its your turn to look at me! ;D) and one thing is for sure, ain't nothin' around that looks like it!

I agree if it has to be done do it. I didn't feel comfortable drilling it myself and didn't want to chance somebody else letting a drill slip. :nervous: It wasn't looks that steered me away at all.

Been running the Kuryakyn blind spot mirrors for about a month now and something about them kept bothering me.  They work fine but something was missing.  Just for kicks and giggles, I bought the HD fairing mount mirrors and swapped them out.  Wow, what a difference!  The HD mirrors have convex glass and provide a greater field of view than the Kuryakyns.  Also, they don't vibrate as much because the ball mounting surface is greater on the HD version while the Kuryakyns use the same ball mount as their handlebar mounted models.  Bottom line:  I am returning the Kuryakyn mirrors.

Attached photos of the install.  Am debating whether I want to install the Kuryakyn chrome covers, but with the black inner fairing, I think they look great as it.  The flat black on the mirrors blends with the dash pad.  Still thinking...

They are nice, but I've ridden a Streetglide w/the H-D version of mirrors like that and couldn't get used to them. The fact they may be chrome still wouldn't do it for me. :nixweiss:

Oh no!! You don't get by that easy... You've got a theme going on there don't stop halfway. :huepfenlol2:

If I could get used to the mirrors in that location and there were chrome ones to be had which ones do you think I would have? ;)

I knew you were going to say that which is why I ordered the covers just to satisfy my own curiosity.  I will install chrome on one side and leave the other as is, then ask for a vote.  Btw, you can only vote once!

Yes, you need to remove fairing and mirrors.  Backside of covers has adhesive tape.  Clean mirror, apply primer provided, rub adhesive strips to activate glue, remove backing on strips and apply cover.  They actually look better than I thought they would.  While the mirrors themselves looked fine, the chrome adds that custom touch that makes them unique.  Haven't seen any other SE or Street Glide with the chrome covers yet.  Highly recommended :2vrolijk_21:

Pete with the covers on are the turn signals still visible?

Thinking of those for Crash for the front turn signals and mirror combo

Pete with the covers on are the turn signals still visible?

Thinking of those for Crash for the front turn signals and mirror combo

Brian, maybe you missed my earlier post, I returned the Kuryakyn mirrors with the turn signals and replaced with the HD fairing mirrors like on the Street Glide.  Better visibility due to the convex glass.  Anyway, Kuryakyn now makes chrome covers for the HD mirrors with and without turn signal indicators.  I elected to go without the turn signal feature, but if you want it, it is available.   You will have to drill a 1/4 in hole directly under the mirror mounting bolt for the wiring harness that plugs directly into your turn signal harness.  Check out the Kuryakyn site under mirrors and download the installation instructions that provides the details.

No Pete I did not see that post. I liked the idea of having turn signals that were not clearly visable when loking straight at the bike.

I have seen the covers that you are talking about, I dont want to have the wire exposed between the mirror and fairing. Spent alot of time making sure that even the main wiring harness is hidden in the frame.

Looking now for internal clutch for a bagger. Have seen electronic clutches....might work if I can find them again.

Hey Brian, is this your B&B SEEG you're talking about?  If so, I can't wait to see it w/o that blob of wire on the frame neck.  :) har!  spyder
